5 Looks From the 2013 VMAs You Probably Won’t Be Wearing Out

By  August 26, 2013

We drool over designer dresses, salivate over one of a kind stilettos, covet cool clutches–red carpet affairs are a live motion presentation of looks we’d like to have at our disposal. The styles scattered amidst the Video Music Awards, though, are kind of a different story. Anything goes for MTV’s big night out–remember Lil’ Kim‘s breast exposing mermaid jumpsuit in 1999? Or the meat dress donned by Lady Gaga in 2010? Only the most outrageous celebrity outfits will do for this yearly event–ones that wouldn’t exactly align with a fashionably practical wardrobe.

While nobody slipped a nip or constructed a frock made of raw beef, 5 crazy celeb ensembles did stand out amongst the rest on this year’s red carpet. From Selena Gomez‘s sheer bustier Atelier Versace gown featuring a sky-high slit to Miley Cyrus‘s rhinestone embellished vintage Dolce & Gabbana leggings and crop top, these looks just may be too bold for most day to night activities. Interesting as they may be, they’d need some major modification before being taken to the streets. We’d have to cut the grand feather train off Rita Ora‘s Alexandre Vauthier Fall 2013 Couture gown and maybe add a slip to the sheer dress Erin Wasson stepped out in. Katy Perry‘s leopard print Ungaro dress would be the easiest of the bunch to wear (though we’ve already seen it on Coco Rocha at the Met Ball earlier this year), but that jewel covered high neck may be deathly uncomfortable during a night out on the town. We’d lose some of the baubles and make it dance friendly!

One star studded lady who surprisingly did not choose to turn heads with an over the top ensemble at the 2013 VMAs was Rihanna. Instead, she took her seat straightaway in a casual, comfortable getup. The “Unapologetic” singer and River Island designer laid low in a graphic t-shirt featuring the lyrics, ”Gotta Get A Ruff Neck,” and cuffed denim jeans at the award’s show, accessorizing in typical Bad Gal RiRi style, though, with a dainty gold grill between her front teeth and a diamond collar around her neck.
