Iris Apfel to Star in Albert Maysles’ Latest Documentary
By Nola Weinstein
May 12, 2011
Apfel’s wardrobe was the subject of its own Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition in 2005, which was aptly titled Ravis Avis meaning “Rare Bird.” The 89-year-old creative genius and her husband Carl Apfel founded the textile firm Old World Weavers in 1950; she also worked on White House restoration and interior design projects for nine presidents. Her signature over-sized glasses and unique aesthetic earned her a spot in Coach’s Fall/Winter 2008 campaign. This is sure to be quite the entertaining fashion film as the irreverent Apfel doesn’t hold back. The talented Maysles, who is 84, definitely knows how to pick his subjects! “I think this will be a very interesting project,” said Apfel. This brilliant duo isn’t letting age slow ‘em down.
