Anna Wintour’s New Role, Artistic Director of Conde Nast

Anna Wintour‘s reign is about to grow, exponentially.

After 25 years at the helm of the fashion bible—Vogue magazine—the Editor in Chief was just promoted to artistic director of Condé Nast, a new role for the company.

In her new position, Wintour will take over certain responsibilities from Si Newhouse, Jr. who left his role last fall. “Si Newhouse leaves a void, inevitably,” said Charles H. Townsend, the chief executive of Condé Nast. “Anna, without even having to think twice about it, is the most qualified person to pick up that torch and carry it into the future.” Wintour will remain the Editor in Chief of Vogue and Editorial Director of Teen Vogue, but officially transition into a consulting role of sorts, providing direction and support for editors across the company’s portfolio of magazines. “It is something I do a lot anyway in my role at Vogue,” she said.“I advise all sorts of people in the outside world, and really, I see this as an extension of what I am doing, but on a broader scale.”

Of the decision to create the role, Townsend explained, “I would go to great distances to avoid losing Anna, particularly in the prime of her career.”
