After 25 years of looking for the right space to open up their New York store, Badgley Mischka will finally open the doors to a new retail heaven.
Today, newly-weds Mark Badgley and James Mischka will begin to do business in a landmarked building (once owned by the Puccis) at 24 East 64th Street, a 3,500-square-foot town house. The space is described by Women’s Wear Daily as being, “a study in relaxed elegance worth room for all of their collections—ready-to-wear, couture, bridal, costume jewelry, fine jewelry, sunglasses, shoes and handbags—spread out over three floors.”
The designers wanted a decidedly homey space for their first New York location, which coincidentally, resembles their homes. “Funny enough, this is kind of what our tow homes look like,” said Badgley. “No matter what we try to do, everything looks the same. But we like that.”
“We’ve been dying to have a New York store,” said Badgley. “We looked for years to find the right locations,” said Mischka. “We would see these storefronts on Madison that are just like a box and not interesting to us. This is interesting because it has a lot of nooks and crannies. You can make each room feel special.”
This is the second location for the business partners of 25 years. The first was located in Los Angeles in 2011. In an effort for retail growth domestically, the next opening is slated for Houston and Bal Harbour, Florida targeting specific clients. “Our product is a lifestyle, but it’s a certain customer,” Badgley said. “It doesn’t work everywhere. We’ve got to find the right towns, the right cities.”
