Summer just got brighter.
After announcing a collaboration earlier this year, Banana Republic is sharing more details on its limited-edition Marimekko capsule. Launching on May 22nd, the 27-piece range will infuse the Finnish house’s conspicuous prints—think the dotted Jurmo, black-and-white Kivet, and floral-inspired Siirtolapuutarha—with BR’s signature silhouettes.
According to Banana Republic’s vice president of women’s design Melloney Birkett, the project was inspired by “Marimekko’s artistic approach to print making,” which involves a myriad of artists creating visually compelling and distinct standouts.
“What makes Marimekko unique is the use of color, the use of pattern,” added BR’s director of print and color Rick Calvo. “There’s a feeling about it that you know it’s Marimekko, even though there are so many different artists that help contribute to the collection. It just feels so together.”
In the case of this collab, there were three designers—all coincidentally named Maija—who fashioned five different prints to spice up BR classics. Aino Maija Metsola is responsible for a blue pattern inspired by the Finnish Archipelago; Maija Isola for two black-and-white designs that date back to 1956 and 1960; and Maija Louekari, whose affinity for “random color combinations” rendered a garden-inspired, kaleidoscopic take. Couple them with natural fabrics, full midi skirts, cinched-waist maxi dresses, and skin-baring short sets, and you’re set to “sing in the key of summer.”
The collaboration coincides with the 50th anniversary of Marimekko’s “unique, unmistakable Unniko” pattern, which is also being celebrated with a limited run in new colorways. The full Banana Republic x Marimekko collection will land on line and in stores on Thursday, May 22nd. With prices running from $39.50 to $140, here’s what you can expect:
