Barney’s New York is going the extra step to show that they are all-inclusive with a groundbreaking ad campaign for spring 2014 featuring 17 transgender men and women.
The decision has “a lot to do with the realization that such extraordinary progress has been made in the last few years for the lesbian, gay and bisexual community, but it’s striking how the transgender community has been left behind,” Dennis Freedman, Barney’s creative director told Women’s Wear Daily. It’s disturbing and upsetting to see that.”
Bruce Weber photographed the campaign called Brothers, Sisters, Sons and Daughters in black-and-white, packaged as a portfolio and complete with 32 plates printed in Italy.
“I hope that my photographs and films of these 17 new friends, who are transgender men and women, convey the respect I have for them and I how I stand in awe of their courage to face the world,” Weber told WWD.
In addition to the portfolio and the plates, each model’s personal story will be told by Vanity Fair contributing editor, Patricia Bosworth, there will be several short films on Barney’s website.
