Scarlett Johansson Preps for her Baby with a Bold Bowl Cut

By  July 30, 2014

Scarlett Johansson is counting down the last few weeks of her pregnancy with a brand new ‘do!

The mom-to-be was spotted Tuesday in New York City with her fiancé Romain Dauriac rocking a bright blond shaggy bowl cut with dark roots that can be seen from the back. It makes sense that the star opted for the chop, as handling the sweltering city with a baby bump (she’s due in August) is no easy feat. Not to mention, little ones like to play (read: pull) with hair.

While last year’s pixie and this year’s lob were the cuts to covet, she’s found a balance between the two to beat the heat. What do you think of Johansson’s fresh cut?

Sprtizing and Styling with Bethany Mota

By  July 30, 2014

Bethany Mota is going viral in more ways than one. The YouTube sensation has entered the closets and bedrooms of over 6 million subscribers through her partnership with Aeropostale. And now she’s staking a claim on their vanities as well with her first fragrance, which launched this week at the teen retailer. Glam got the chance to sit down with the socially and sartorially savvy star to get the scoop on her new scent and her beauty must-haves, plus, snag style tips to shift your wardrobe from summer to fall!

On her reaction to creating her first scent:

I have always really wanted to create a fragrance so I was just like, “Is this for real? Are we actually going to do this?” I kind of didn’t believe it at first and then we had the first meeting where we went over basically a blueprint of what I would want the fragrance to be. Would I want it to be floral or would I want it to be super girly or a little bit more edgy? And then I was like, “Wait, this is actually happening.” So my reaction I was just so amazed, freaked out and excited all at once.

On her top beauty staples:

BB cream for sure because it’s so light and it has sun protection, and it’s just great. Definitely mascara; I like to use the Cover Girl Bombshell [Volume by Lashblast]. It’s double sided, and I feel like it just does so much for my lashes. Then an eyebrow pencil, I feel like eyebrows can just change so much with your makeup. You can be wearing very little makeup and just fill in your brows, and, boom, it makes such a difference so I always have my little brow pencil in there.

On who the Bethany Mota girl is:

Everything that I design I do with the mindset of what would my viewers like because obviously they’re the ones that are going to be buying the product. But it’s also finding the balance where I really love what I’m creating and they also love it as well. I always get inspired by them using Twitter and Instagram; they’ll send me pictures like, “What do you think of this outfit?” I always ask them for help of what they would like to see in the line. So for me, it’s all about kind of incorporating their ideas with my ideas to make it something that we all love.

bethany-mota-vanessa-hudgensOn her style and beauty icons:

Vanessa Hudgens; she’s very bohemian and I’ve actually been inspired by her style for a few years now so I love her. Lauren Conrad has also always been a big fashion inspiration for me because her style is just very classic and very classy. And then also Demi Lovato because my style isn’t super edgy, but every once in a while, I like to be a little edgy and I always get inspired by her to do that. She inspired this leather jacket [from her Fall collection].

On her favorite designer:

I’ve always been a big fan of Marc Jacob.

On the best way to transition your wardrobe to fall:

Knee socks and tights; it’s a perfect way to take your summer dress or your summer skirt and still wear it in the fall time. What I like to do is when it’s really cold is I’ll wear black tights and I’ll take printed knee socks and put it over and then [add] some really cool combat boots and, boom. You can just pair that with a super summery floral skirt and it looks like it’s made for the fall.

The Lippies We Love for National Lipstick Day

By  July 29, 2014

Ever since we were little, we’ve been fascinated with lipstick. And as we grew up, our love hasn’t waned–all of us Glam girls carry at least one (if not three) lippies in our bags regularly. In honor of National Lipstick Day, the editorial team shares their lipstick lust with their favorite shades:

1. YSL Rouge Pur Couture #13 Le Orange, available at Barneys.com for $35
Back in the day–2010, so don’t judge–I used to be obsessed with the Kardashians, Kourtney, specifically. I couldn’t get enough of the littlest Kardashian’s style! I had coveted her red lips and tips from afar and the moment she let it slip what color she favors, I knew I had to have it. She introduced me to the world of luxury lipsticks with this baby. I still wear it, years later.  – Channing Hargrove, Fashion Reporter

2. NARS Limited Edition Cinematic Lipstick in Short Circuit (similar shade: Jungle Red), available at NARSCosmetics.com for $26
I’ve been on a seamlessly never-ending search for the perfect orangey/red shade but thanks to NARS Short Circuit lipstick, I think my quest is finally over. NARS has mastered long lasting formula, so I can stop obsessing over it wearing off and spend more time left making pretty orangey/red kissy faces.  – Michelle Kushner, Designer

3. Revlon ColorBurst Lacquer Balm, available at CVS.com for $9.49
I love that this brings a pop of color to any look and is perfect for the summer. – Jenny Lee, Editorial Intern

4. Stila Color Balm Lipstick in Brigitte, available at Sephora.com for $22
How I ended up with this Stila lipstick is a mystery (I guess you could say it found me sometime during Fashion Week madness), but I’m thankful that I did. It’s a balm, so it leaves a satin-y finish but it almost acts like a stain. The creamy lip color is super pigmented, so it gives my lips a really deep color without drying them out. Best of all, the color is buildable, so I can achieve any color from just-bitten to full-on vamp with just a few swipes. – Lauren Kaplan, Associate Editor

5. Illamasqua Matte Lip Liquid in Forbidden (similar shade: NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Carthage, available at Sephora.com for $26)
I’ve never been a big lipstick person, preferring to stick to glosses for their ease of application, but this matte pink won me over, hardcore. It’s an apply-and-forget sort of lipstick, perfect for girls like me who hate touchups throughout the night. – Bianca Posterli, Editorial Director

6. MAC Limited Edition Ruffian Red (Similar Shade:  MAC Russian Red, available at MACCosmetics.com for $20)
This is the best red, but since it’s limited edition, I save it for special occasions. I first got my hands on a tube backstage in 2009, and then the brand reissued it to the public in 2012 (when I bought 4 tubes). It is a beautiful intense blue red that’s a little bit retro for the 100% modern woman.  – Carolyn Hsu, Managing Editor

7. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Jilted, available at UrbanDecay.com for $22
Pink used to be a very bad word when I was in high school and I avoided it like the plague. But, I slowly but surely embraced the hue in it punchiest forms since beauty became my beat. The lipstick packs a lot of pigment without drying out my pout and provides a fresh alternative to the classic red lip for a pulled-together, yet effortless, look. – Valis Vicenty, Associate Beauty Editor

8. Dolce & Gabbana Cream Lipstick in Delight and Sephora Rouge Cream Lisptick in Miss Or Madam, available at Sephora.com for $12.50
The perfect pink can be hard to find. That’s why I blend two of my favorite lippies—Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick in Delight and Sephora Rouge Cream Lipstick in Miss or Madam—to settle on this pretty hue. – Angel Lenise Robinson, Entertainment Editor

9. NYX Cosmetics Macaroon Lippies in Violet, available at NYXComsetics.com for $6
I picked the NYX Cosmetics Macaron Lippies Violet because it’s a fun, bold and a different color. It really popped against my skin tone and added some flavor to my neutral/natural eye and face makeup. — Sam Bortniker, Editorial Intern

At The Root of It: Mara Roszak, Celebrity Stylist

By  July 29, 2014

Growing up with a mother who was an artist, it’s no surprise that L’Oréal Paris‘ celebrity hair stylist Mara Roszak enjoyed creative freedom from an early age. Roszak, who got her big break at seventeen styling Sarah Michelle Gellar’s hair, now works with fashion and beauty icons, including Mila Kunis, Zoe Saldana, Olivia Wilde, Kate Mara, and Diane Kruger. We got the scoop from Mara on how she got to where she is now as well as some insider tips for getting great hair:

How did you get your start in the beauty industry?

Shortly after graduating from beauty school, I got a call for a job from a family friend who happened to be a celebrity publicist. Her client was Sarah Michelle Gellar! I did her hair for an event, it went really well, and I was then hired to travel with her during the promotion of a movie.

How do you think growing up with a mother who was an artist influenced your career path?

My mom hugely influenced and inspired me to become a hairstylist. She is a creative soul, a true artist, and I was fortunate to grow up in a very open, creative space, watching her paint, craft, and create. I had real creative freedom from a young age. My mother recognized my passion and helped cultivate my art. She always was, and still is, my number one supporter and has helped guide me to where I am today.

Who or what inspires you? Who are you beauty icons?

So many things inspire me — my mom, my sister, and all the women in my family are strong, independent, and artistic and inspire me every day. I also find inspiration from books, movies, art, and the people around me. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy is my beauty icon. She was so elegant, perfectly accessorized and simplistically beautiful.

Do you have any tips for caring for hair in the summer?

Moisture is key. The pool, ocean, and sun can all be really drying on hair. I recommend using hydrating masks–my favorite ones for the summer are L’Oreal Paris’ OleoTherapy Deep Recovery Mask, Advanced Haircare Power Moisture Moisture Rush Mask, and Advanced Haircare Total Repair 5 Damage Erasing Balm.

What are some of your must-have hair products and tools?

My must-haves include L’Oreal Paris’ OleoTherapy Perfecting Oil Essence, Elnett Satin Hairspray, Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT High Lift Creation Spray along with my Parlux hairdryer, and curling irons in every size.

Any tricks for preventing frizz?

Dry hair tends to get frizzier, so use moisturizing hair care products. Also, if you blow-dry, use a nozzle to reduce frizziness.

What hairstyles are you currently obsessed with?

Still obsessed with the bob.

Any fashion, beauty, or hairstyle don’ts?

You should always have a certain level of comfort. If you’re not comfortable or confident, it can show. Wear your hairstyle and don’t let it wear you.

4 Tips to Save Your Skin During a Cruise

By  July 28, 2014

Even if you’re on a vacation, your skincare shouldn’t be. The sun, pool water, and surf can unfortunately leave your skin…intoxicated. Glam chatted up Canyon Ranch Facialist Bernie Williams after snagging an Environ Ultimate Vitamin Therapy Facial aboard the Celebrity Summit (which left us glowing, literally). She shared a few quick tips on how to ensure that your skin looks great from ship to shore:

Slather on the SunscreenSunscreen becomes top priority when walking on the top deck where the water reflects the sunlight and UV rays. Aside from saving yourself the pain of a bad burn, slathering on a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every 2 hours will keep aging at bay. “[It] is going to keep your skin looking younger for longer and it’s going to prevent pre-mature aging, which is a big problem that we have,” Williams said. “We can’t stop aging, but we can slow and reverse premature aging.”

Amass Moisture – Just because you’re floating on a body of water doesn’t mean it’s good for you. The combination of salt water, sun, and air conditioning can dehydrate skin cells, so maintaining that moisture balance is essential. Drinking lots of water will keep you hydrated but applying moisturizer will keep it from escaping. “You want to make sure you’re using a day and night cream so you’re getting that hydration and feeding [the skin],” she said.

Exfoliate Your Face – Regardless of what you use to slough off the dead skin, don’t forget to pack it in your bag! Regularly exfoliating will help maintain healthy cell turnover as well as keep your glow going at every port. Plus, it ensures all of your other skincare products sink in as they should. “The dead skin cells create a layer on your face and that prevents those products from penetrating into the skin,” she said. “It’s useless to have these wonderful products if they can’t get through that barrier.”

Top It Off with Toner – The trick is to swipe on toner after cleansing to balance and protect skin when it is most vulnerable. “The toner is there to help protect your skin after you’ve cleansed because you remove the acid mantle from the skin,” Williams explained. “When you remove the acid mantle, you open yourself up to germs and bacteria and outside pollutants, so that’s a protective pH coating so your acid mantle comes back into balance.”

Bon voyage, beauties!

Discover your next obsession with our Editor’s Pick series, must-have products for your home, wardrobe, makeup bag, and office curated by Glam editors.

Hot town, summer in the city…” and keeping a beauty look becomes a bigger chore than it’s worth. By the time I step down into the subway in the morning, not only do I want to turn around and head to the nearest shower, most of my makeup has melted off. While primers and powders help, nothing seemed to stand up to the power of my sweat.

That is until I got a glimpse of Laura Mercier’s new Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide. It blurs imperfections for a seamless application that you can easily build upon. The fluide comes in 24 color-true shades with a bi-phase formula that activates fresh pigment with every use. But what makes it a summer must-have is the sweat and humidity proof formula that leave a matte finish. After all, shiny is the worst thing you can call someone with oily skin. You can power up your look with primer prior to application for a fresh face that will stay put well after the sun goes down.

#ManiMonday: Christian Louboutin Releases Lacquered-Inspired Steppers

By  July 28, 2014

We can’t stop talking about Louboutin’s newest launch, and with good reason! His seductive shoes are getting in on the mani game as well.

By now, everyone’s seen the Rouge Louboutin lacquer paired with the designer’s Ballerina Ultima, a stilettoed slipper he fashioned for David Lynch’s Fetish exhibit–and the rest of his lacquer collection will receive a similar treatment. In lieu of spiked ballet slippers, the fresh heels will be an ode to manicures with acrylic-like tips sprinkled on top of pumps and booties in hues of silver, gold, and his signature red.

The stunning shoes shouldn’t be a surprise, as the designer has always had show-stopping ideas thanks to his background in performance art. In a video for Style.com, he noted that showgirls, such as the ladies of Folies Bergère where he worked in the ‘80s, have been his long-time beauty icons. “There’s one thing about showgirls and performers in general, it’s the transformation of a woman to another woman, which is almost like a bird of paradise,” he explained in the clip. And in this case, a high-shine manicure mimics the flashy feathers as the showgirls step on stage! Talk about a new way to take the spotlight!

Short and Sweet: 3 Tips for Making the Cut

By  July 28, 2014

If you’re considering a big chop this summer, make sure to pick a cropped do that’s right for you. Our words of wisdom: Know your options, pick the look that works with your style and personality, and then learn how to style it. Here are three to consider.

The Playful Pixie
What it is: This messy style works off the “perfection through imperfection” theory, meaning the messier the better. The playful pixie is ideal for the girl with an edgy, contemporary sort of style who isn’t afraid to stand out and turn heads. Its jagged and angular aesthetic adds sharpness to a rounder face.
Who has rocked it: Miley Cyrus, Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Lawrence
How to get it:
1. Start by rubbing Garnier Fructis De-Constructed Pixie Play Wax between your palms and apply it from root to tip. This gives hair control and structure without stiffness.
2. To get piecey definition, rough up your hair between index finger and thumb for lots of texture. Style it in multiple directions.
3. Spray Garnier Fructis Texture Tease for long-lasting hold and protection against humidity without stickiness or residue.

Short and Classy
What it is: This short do looks polished and pretty—it boasts longer layers and a softer sort of appeal than the playful pixie. Shiny and sleek strands are styled with a side part for a more subdued, professional look. This classy style works with all face shapes.
Who has rocked it: Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Hudson, Emma Watson
How to get it:
1. Start by rubbing Garnier Fructis De-Constructed Pixie Play Wax between your palms and apply it to hair.
2. Use a comb to make a side part. Then comb it down, tucking longer layers behind your ears.
3. Spray Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Humidity Hairspray to tame any flyaways and add weightless shine.

The Curly Crop
What it is: Girls with curls can rock a cropped do too! This fun hairstyle calls for more volume on top so ringlets fall casually over the forehead. This free-spirited style is ideal for curlicue lovelies who like a chic but natural look.
Who has rocked it: Solange Knowles, Keri Russell, Audrey Tautou
How to get it:
1. Section off damp hair and add Garnier Fructis Style Curl Sculpting Cream Gel to locks. This 24-hour holding formula de-poofs ringlets, preparing them for styling with intense nourishment.
2. Shape your style by scrunching your curls as they air-dry or while you blow-dry them with a diffuser.
3. Once hair is dry, add high shine to your cropped curls with Garnier Fructis Brilliantine Shine Spray.
