I Woke Up Like This: Oiled Up

By  January 23, 2015

We know it’s somewhat ironic to cover our face in oil while simultaneously carrying oil blotters in our handbags, but hear us out.

It seems like just yesterday we were all obsessed with combating oil. Oily hair and skin = bad. Clearasil = good. Right? Wrong. Well, not wrong. Just perhaps not so black and white. These days, there are some killer new products on the market to help harness the moisturizing powers of oil without subjecting you to all of the icky stuff that goes along with it (like stinky smelly hair and acne, for starters). It has to do with the differences between mineral oils and plant based oils (head here if you want the scientific scoop on it all).

But if all you want is Jennifer Anniston’s complexion sans makeup, well then listen up. We have been using oil based products on our skin for awhile now and, we must admit, we are huge proponents of the stuff. If you have yet to oil up or even if you are already well greased, we have a few suggestions for your face that’ll leave your skin aglow.

1. Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil, $18.50
2. Rodin Luxury Face Oil, $170
3. Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil, $16.00
4. Mila Moursi Moisturizing Oil / Aromapure Serum, $160

Beauty Buzz: Anna Cleveland’s Cotton-Covered Lashes, Givenchy’s Aromas to Apertifs, and DreamDry Joins Up With Jonathan Adler

By  January 22, 2015

We love a little denim, but the latest issue of CR Fashion Book is taking thing to the next level. Anna Cleveland covers the fashion bible, not only dressed in the textile, but also sporting a frayed patch over her eye, mimicking a lush lash look. While the exaggerated look was meant to emphasize “character,” a running theme in the issue, this one might be strictly editorial. [Fashion Gone Rouge]

We love to spritz on a little Givenchy before a big night out, but if you’re exploring London, there’s a new way to experience the brand’s scents. Hotel Café Royal is serving up a slew of new cocktails inspired by the L’Atelier de Givenchy perfume line. Crafted by The Club at Café Royal mixologist Tiziano Tasso, the cocktail menu includes Cuir Blanc, a Martini with Siberian pine needle extract, and Oud Flamboyant, which calls for the less exotic Japanese whisky plus mandarin juice. Cheers! [Eater]

DreamDry might be branching out beyond beauty! The blow dry bar linked up with Jonathan Adler to create a candle that blends sparkling champagne, pink grapefruit, raspberry, French cassis, violet leave, rose petals, crushed sage, crisp mint, and grape leaf. Don’t go looking on the web for the ambiance enhancer, as it will be exclusively sold at its spaces in New York and Chicago. You won’t have to wait long either; the candle will be priced for $42 – a little bit of luxury to light up your day or evening! [WWD]

Smashbox snapped up a serious upgrade, as its Los Angeles studio completed a year’s worth of renovations in partnership with Industrial Color Brands. Not only does the studios have space for shoots, but the refreshed space now includes added powers, custom-designed makeup tables, and even a café! So when can we book a shoot? [WWD]

We’ve seen our fair share of dry winter skin this winter, but now Bare Minerals is back with a fresh formula to soothe your skin. The new Complexion Rescue bounces the alphabet creams back with a refreshing gel cream formula that hydrates instantly, has buildable tinted coverage in 10 shades (so far), and has added SPF to keep the skin safe when you step out! It’s already become a major everyday must for us! [Styleist]

Day in the Life: Aura Friedman, Nexxus Celebrity Color Expert

By  January 22, 2015

Aura Friedman‘s artistic approach to hair color has been her calling card since her start. After she was named best colorist in Miami Beach by Allure in 2000, her move to the Big Apple sent her straight to the runway with the likes of Peter Som as well as behind the haute hair hues of M.I.A., Lady Gaga, Sky Ferreira, and Molly Sims — just to name a few. Glam caught up with the celebrity colorist as she paints a series of sultry shades for her clients, including the legendary Lauren Hutton, while finding her inspiration close to home and even prepping for an upcoming shoot.

7:00 a.m. Wake up! As soon as I open my eyes, I’m out of bed to make coffee for my boyfriend and I and turn on NPR. I love starting my day informed, so I listen to the news every morning.
8:00 a.m. Pull out my Powerball for a quick at-home work out that usually consists of sit-ups and Pilates moves.
8:30 a.m. It’s time to shower and get ready to start my day.
9:45 a.m. I’m out the door and headed to work at Sally Hershberger Downtown. This is my commute-to-work selfie!

9:50 a.m. The commute from Brooklyn is the perfect time to check emails and prep for the day ahead. The view isn’t bad either!

11:00 a.m. This is my first client, Crystal Moselle – I’ve been coloring her hair for 10 years and we’ve become good friends. I’m especially excited about seeing her today because she will be rocking her new color at Sundance, premiering her documentary called Wolfpack.

12:30 p.m. My second client of the day is one of my long time model clients, Ava Smith. She is the absolute sweetest and brought me a cute succulent plant.

2:00 p.m. This cute ginger is Allison Jacobs – her fun personality calls for rose gold highlights!

2:25 p.m. In between clients, I have time to color a wig for an upcoming shoot and caught my assistant Gloria blow-drying it!

3:15 p.m. I somehow manage to catch a quick 15-minute lunch break in between clients!
4:30 p.m. Client number four is another beautiful ginger! Audra Callo is a natural redhead that is fading and wants brighten her locks.

5:45 p.m. My next client is one of my favorite girls at Wilhelmina Models. Instead of double processing Veronika’s hair, we decide to foil highlights and the result is a seamless platinum shade.

7:00 p.m. My last client of the day is the one-and-only Lauren Hutton. She is incredible to talk to; so well traveled and knowledgeable. I love my job!

8:30 p.m. After a long day, I finish up at the salon and head home. When I get home I find my boyfriend (who is an artist) working on hand-drawn Zines, which happen to be treasures. As you can see I am surrounded by his art, this is what inspires me daily.

9:15 p.m. Dinnertime! I try to prepare food for the week on Mondays, so I can just warm things up every eve.
9:45 p.m. After dinner, I put on a movie and pull some references on my iPad to prep for a potential shoot.
12:00 a.m. I’m in bed by midnight, ready to wake up and do it all over again!

Beauty Buzz: Lea Michele Opts for a Chop, Kendall Jenner’s Estee Lauder Ads Unveiled, and Suave Wants Everyone’s Strands Satisfied

By  January 21, 2015

Say goodbye to Lea Michele’s long locks! The Gleek shared a snap from the set with Becca Tobin, sporting a bold a bob with flipped ends – perfectly apt for Rachel Berry. Though the Twitterverse approved of Michele’s new look, the look was only temporary, as one of the show’s writers, Jess Meyer, offered photographic proof that the actress’s mane was still the same. Maybe she’ll opt for the chop when the show finally wraps? [Refinery 29]

Ok, Kendall! The young megamodel unveiled her first video spot since her start with Estee Lauder, and she kinda killed it! The elder Jenner struck a pose and fluttered her lengthy lashes with the help of the brand’s new Little Black Primer, which helps pump up the volume of any mascara applied afterwards or worn along for a more natural look. Lush lashes are now at the top of our spring must-haves! [InStyle]

There’s always inspiration for fresh hairstyles, but attempting to achieve them can leave you a little disappointed – Suave Professionals is having none of that! The brand is unleashing its Luxe Style Infusion collection, which boasts seven stylers to add volume, smooth strands, and define curls for a variety of hair textures. But that’s not all, as the brand will also offer an array of style options that they can easily pull off and will last through the day. Is hair nirvana in our future? We say yes! [WWD]

Most of us grew up envying the glamour of the dolls we played with, but there may be big changes ahead. Sonia Singh’s Tree Change Dolls Tumblr chronicles the transformation of Barbies, Bratz, and more from glamazons to the girl next door by painting their faces and even re-fashion their clothing for a more realistic appearance that would appeal to moms and impressionable young girls. Hey, everyone has to take off their makeup sometimes! [Pop Sugar

Beauty Buzz: Brooklyn Decker Bags a Bob, L’Oreal Gets Twiggy With It, and Aussie Ditches the Hair Drama

By  January 20, 2015

Some short styles take serious consideration, but others can be just as cute if they were just a whim, especially if you’re Brooklyn Decker. The model turned actress took to Instagram to show off her shirt that benefits English in Mind Haiti foundation, only acknowledging the new cut afterwards, “PS- yes I chopped my hair off.. thank you @ronacolor @joseph_michael54 #lukeoconnor.” The bob squad is getting stronger by the day! [People]

Kirsten Dunst isn’t the only one with a covetable coif, as L’Oréal Professionnel announced Twiggy be the latest British Beauty to become its UK brand ambassador for its new Majirel High Lift products. The iconic model follows in the footsteps of Alexa Chung who is the current face of the brand’s Inoa range, and Twiggy hopes to “inspire women to be confident in their personal style and never be afraid of trying something new.” With all the new arrivals, it can be hard to pick up the problems at the salon. But the brand has partnered with StyleSeat to offer access to their mane musts, appointments, and more! [The Telegraph]

There’s sure to be a few bumps in the road on the journey to loving our hair, and luckily we’re not alone. Aussie partnered with Graydon Sheppard, aka the star of the $h*t Girls Say series, for a video about all of our hair woes from keeping frizz at bay, to keeping our coif day at the pool, to worrying about leaving our hot tools on. As we tend to run late when our locks aren’t looking right on a weekly basis, everyone can share their #HairProbs and find solutions with the brand’s new Total Miracle 7-in-1 range to help you #DitchtheDrama. After unveiling a fresh eye shadow concept last week, Hourglass announced its foray into skincare Tuesday. The first luxurious skin care essentials include the Equilibrium Biomimetric Skin Active Serum and Equilibrium Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Day Fluid and was inspired by amniotic fluid, which is linked to normalizing skin-cell growth. While the lightweight lifters can cause sticker shock, the products are quite potent and ensure your skin stays snatched for years to come. [Snob Essentials]

We’ve been battling breakouts for a while, and there’s a pile of products to prove it. YoDerm is looking to zap the zits, one personal consultation at a time. Dove Wants You to Love Your Curly Locks

By  January 20, 2015

Shirley Temple, Poodle head, Q-Tip, Brillo Pad, etc.  – with nicknames like these given to girls at an early age, we quickly learn it’s not easy growing up with twisted tresses. In fact, only 4 in 10 girls with curly hair think it’s beautiful and only 10% grow up feeling proud of their hair’s texture.

But Dove Hair is looking to change our minds and embrace our textured tresses with a new short film simply called Love Your Curls. The clip features five young girls who would rather have straight hair, including an 11-year-old named Jewel, who said she wished she could just rip it out. “That feeling makes me sad sometimes when I leave out my hair,” said 9 year old Angelyce. The video brings together all of the girls for curly jam band, who embrace their spiraly strands and declare their curls are perfect just the way they are. Studies show that little ones are seven times more likely to love their hair if those around them (like moms, friends, family, and even strangers) love them too!

It also marks a big move for not just for Dove Hair but for the industry overall. The brand is launching its new Advanced Series Quench Absolute collection designed to cleanse, nourish, and treat tresses to provide 4 times more defined natural curls with the help of precious Brazilian Buriti Oil. This comes on the heels of brands like Living Proof, Philip Kingsley, which have debuted curl care collections of their own to provide Curly Sues with the moisture, frizz fighters, and strengtheners needed to keep unruly tresses wrapped around your finger. With proper products to soothe and smooth our strands, there’s sure to be more girls with curls who love their locks in the near future.

Beauty Buzz: Mindy Kaling Opts for Ombré, Andrew Gallimore Gears Up for NARS, and Estée Lauder Loves Lisa Perry

By  January 19, 2015

Mindy Kaling has gone bronde, and we can’t get enough of it! The comedienne debuted a fresh ombré at the Fox All-Stars party over the weekend, sharing the first snap on Instagram with the caption, “I’m blonde now guys, deal with it. @clarisshair & @kateydenno getting me ready for my new life as a R&B singer.” While many believe the lighter locks are extensions, the look would be still be an awesome (more permanent) option for the spring and summer. [People]

NARS has a new makeup maestro across the pond: Andrew Gallimore. The makeup mad scientist will serve as the brand’s new U.K. ambassador, featuring the covetable color cosmetics in his editorials and events. Frederique Lampert, Nars’ regional executive director for Europe, said Gallimore’s “affinity for bold, boundary-pushing artistry marries beautifully with the philosophies that François Nars established…20 years ago, which we still embrace today.” [WWD]

Bold blush might not be en vogue now, but cheek coloring has goes back centuries. Ancient Egyptians rubbed ground ochre on their cheeks to help accentuate their eyes while Brits in the 1820s wore a mixture of safflower, red sandalwood, Brazil wood, and carmine to color their complexion. Even in the Victorian Age, ladies stained their cheeks with beet juice to snag that signature flush – the more you know! [Into the Gloss]

Flaunt It Friday: Play Up Those Eyes

By  January 16, 2015

While fresh faces will be a big focus for 2015, the eyes have it as well! Whether you’re painting the town this weekend or just practicing your technique, there are a slew of eye looks you can create  that draw from the runway, the magazine pages, and beyond.

Color Pop – A lot of designers ensured that all eyes were on their models with vibrant pops of color on their lids. But you’re not limited to bits of blue; Revlon’s PhotoReady Eye Art Lid+Line+Lash not only provides several ways to wear the product, but also comes in an array of rich, jewel tones that are perfect to wear any time of the year. Feel free to fill the lid up to the crease with the cream shadow and then line the lashes with the glitter. If you’re looking for a little more dimension, use Honeybee Gardens Eye Shadow Palette in Party Girl to play up the outer corners of the eyes. Just dot the color on before using a fluffy shadow brush to blend it into the rest of your eye look. If you want to create a rainbow effect, L’Oreal’s Colour Riche Quad in Neon Skirt allows you to mix and match with a layered eye look worthy of an Instagram snap.

Cat-Eye Cute – There’s nothing as striking as bolt of bold liner. While we don’t recommend sleeping in your makeup, you create a similar effect by lining your waterlines with Pixi’s Endless Silky Eye Pen and smudging with a cotton swab for that lived-in look. If the classic cat-eye makes you want to take a cat-nap, never fear! Using a pen like Maybelline’s Eye Studio Master Precise Liquid Liner gives you the freedom to create different shapes and angles, so don’t be afraid to get Twiggy with it and sweep it into the crease for a graphic, modern motif. If you need a little more control, Sonia Kashuk’s Dramatically Different Defining Long Wear Gel Liner glides on easily, especially with an angled liner brush, and lasts for hours without budging.

Smoked Out – This eye look is the most searched on the Internet, but the technique isn’t hard to master if you have the right tools. If you’re not sure where to start, e.l.f.’s Flawless Eyeshadow has the the step-by-step embossed in the shadow itself. Once applied, you can blend from the lashline to the crease with a fluffy brush to blend seamlessly. If you’re not sure which shades are suitable for you, Almay’s Intense i-Color Smoky-i Eyeshadow comes in shades that will make your natural eye color pop. If you’re in a time crunch and have no tools, Maybelline’s Eye Studio Master Smoky Shadow Pencil puts the power in a swipe on one end and a smudge on the other end.

Beauty Buzz: Diane Kruger’s Strawberry Swirl, 100 Years of Black Beauty in 1 Minute, and For the Love of Foil Liner

By  January 16, 2015

It’s hasn’t even been a week since the Golden Globes, but a few stars are already switching up their shades on the red carpet. For the Critics Choice Awards, Diane Kruger softened her natural blonde locks with a fresh strawberry hue while Emily Blunt (who took home the award for best actress in an action movie) lightened her locks with a blonde balayage. There’s sure to be more mane mayhem before the Oscars race ends! [People]

We feel head over heels for Cut’s 100 Years of Beauty clip, and the team is back again! This time the glam squad focused on African American beauty through the decades from Afros, cornrows, Poetic Justice braids and, more while also paying homage to iconic looks from Josephine Baker, Billie Holiday, Angela Davis, and many more. Now we’re dying to swoop our strands into a Ronettes-style beehive! [The Huffington Post]

We keeled over at the sight of the foiled liner looks from Dior’s Haute Couture show, and saw the trend continue with its Pre-Fall 2015 show. And now the brand has made it easy to get the look at home with a set of liner strips you can peel, apply, and go. But if you got a bit of sticker shock, there are plenty of other ways to snag the look for yourself. [Refinery 29]

Speaking of amazing eye looks; Julep has broken into the color cosmetics realm with not only a mascara that we’re currently mad for, but also a selection of chic shadows. The Orbital Eyeshadow collection boasts shades that are out of this world with three-layer pigment injection technology that blends metallic pigments and a pearl iridescence for for a multidimensional eye look with just a swipe! [Glam Inbox]

If you didn’t snag a sweet brush set for the holidays, you’re still in luck! Napoleon Perdis is having a rare sale on all of the brushes you need to create epic eye, lip, and face looks with 20% off – no code required. But you’ll want to snatch them up soon, as the sale ends January 17, so get to clicking! [Glam Inbox]
