Dawn Hahn‘s dream of a blow dry bar in her own backyard was destined to become a reality with her entrepreneur’s savvy style, “eye on the prize” perseverance, and ahead of the game smarts. She’s a Bay Area/Silicon Valley gal, after all, and thus no stranger to the start-up mentality of making ideas come to life.
As a resident of San Francisco’s up-in-coming West Portal area, a quaint neighborhood with boutique type businesses becoming more and more prevalent, Hahn was inspired to get in on the growing action by offering a place for pampering in her community. Hot hair was a point of passion for the visionary, and thus Bloom was born. With a chic interior and skilled staff, Bloom is a laid-back oasis for women in the southern section of San Francisco (where blow-dry bars are basically non-existent) whose locks need some love. With only a handful of chairs and a small, select team, the feeling in the room is like being part of a family…if your family were hair styling gurus with the ability to make you look like a model. Hahn is the backbone of it all, running her business with skill, but also a sense of humor. Here’s what her beauty-filled day looks like:
|5:30 a.m.||Up and off to the kitchen for my really large cup of French Roast and then jump back into bed with it. As I sip my coffee, I am checking appointment books for the day, reading emails, check online banking, update my to-do list.|
|6:30 a.m.||Off to the salon, I am so lucky to have a 5-minute commute and a husband that drives me to work most of the time. Since we open early -7AM, Monday-Thursdays for the women headed to work, we get into the salon early to get our espresso machine set up, spa waters made, and everything ready to welcome the day’s customers.|
|7:00 a.m.||After checking in with opening staff, I am usually out front of the salon, sweeping the front sidewalk and chatting with neighbors and other merchants opening their stores and restaurants, double checking the set up of salon and getting prepared for the day ahead and often the week to come.|
|7:30 a.m.||Making myself another coffee, greeting customers and talking with our fun front desk staff, I love this part of my job! We have really great staff, they are young, energetic, hard working and oddly, we seem to have hired a group of people that are really really fun and funny!|
|8:00 a.m.||We are starting the 2nd group of morning blowouts, and busy taking care of customers.|
|9:00 a.m.||Once we are up and going, I head to our cute and super tiny office to make calls, do banking, pay bills, run payroll, work on marketing plans, check shop consumable inventory, catch up with our salon manager Aaron, and we usually spend the next 15 minutes off topic and being silly and laughing about anything and everything. Did I mention my great staff?|
|10:30 a.m.||Still trying to tackle the never ending to do list…|
|11:15 a.m.||Pondering lunch, we have so many amazing restaurants in our West Portal neighborhood, and everyday we all struggle with which one to call in take out. We usually hit the Submarine Center which is the best sub place ever, or Squat and Gobble for huge yummy salads, or El Toreador, literally the best Mexican restaurant in SF.|
|12:00 p.m.||Lunch! Usually I eat in the office, but I try to get out with girlfriends a couple times a week.|
|1:30 p.m.||Running salon errands, buying fruit for our yummy spa waters, banking, post office, etc.|
|2:30 p.m.||I try and sneak away during the day to go home and love up on my two little old dogs, Maya and Lola, they are ridiculously attached to us, and I like to check in and say hi.|
|3:15 p.m.||The salon gets busier in the late afternoon, and its always nice to get back in the salon and work the front desk, help clean brushes, organize the styling stations, make customer coffee and teas and really just chat with customers, a lot of our customers are friends or community acquaintances, so getting to see them is a perk to this job for me. We have such a nice community and everyone knows everyone, related to someone, it’s really a village here.|
|4:30 p.m.||This is the time of day that we turn up the music a little, most likely you will hear staff singing, and probably some dancing. When the blow-dryers are going and music going, the energy is great.|
|5:30 p.m.||I start wrapping up my day and checking over the salon to be sure we are ready for the next day. I check the cash drawer for change, appointments for the next day, staffing for the day and pack up. We are open 7 days a week and 12 hours a day, so there is never a lot of time to reset for the next day.|
|6:00 p.m.||I like to walk home if my feet aren’t killing me, and its not to dark, or my husband will come pick me up. We enjoy having dinner together or dinner out with friends. We are empty nesters now, so it’s all about us, our friends and quite frankly, our dogs!|
|8:30 p.m.||You will find me in my pajamas curled up in bed with my computer and watching my favorite TV shows, I love Scandal, Walking Dead, and Homeland. This is my favorite time of day, just putting my feet up and relaxing. Reflecting on the day, feeling excited for the next day, I love my new business and life, so for now all is good for me.|
|9:30 p.m.||Honestly, probably asleep! I don’t often make it to 9:30 these days … hah! Did I mention we are open 80 hours a week?!|
Called Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare, Brinkley collaborated with renowned dermatologist Doris Day to infuse the eight-piece vegan line with a proprietary Bio-Copper Complex to revitalize skin while providing protection from infrared solar rays. The range includes the Recapture Day + IR Defense Anti-Aging Day Cream, Recapture 360 Night Anti-Aging Night Treatment, Complete Clarity Daily Facial Exfoliating Polish, Refocus Eye + IR Defense Serum Infusion Eye Treatment, Uplift + IR Defense Firming Neck & Décolleté Treatment, Close Up Instant Wrinkle Smoother & Treatment, Close Up + IR Defense Skin Smoothing Primer Serum, and Complete Clarity Facial Cleansing Wash with prices ranging from $22.95 to $69.95. “It was very important to me that we formulated something that, as much as is possible, protected against future sun damage,” Brinkley told Women’s Wear Daily.
Don’t expect to see the turquoise and amber glass jars on department store beauty counters, as the Brinkley’s line is slated to make its debut on HSN in March before rolling out to Kohl’s later that month. Brinkley already had close ties to the network, as she worked with HSN’s chief merchandising officer Anne Martin-Vachon when both were with CoverGirl in 2005. “She has all sorts of stories, on everything from her line to her modeling career to her kids [Brinkley’s 15-year-old daughter, Sailor Brinkley-Cook, is also a model; both are represented by IMG], “ Martin-Vachon told the trad publication. “She has first-to-market technology in the line, which is a fair trade, eco-friendly line that doesn’t test on animals. And she is incredibly passionate about this line.”
This just marks the latest beauty venture for the model mogul,–she also has a wig collection for Hair2Wear and a signature scent, Believe by Christie Brinkley. It looks like beauty by Brinkley is taking over the world one counter (and network) at a time.
Beauty Buzz: Karlie & Co. Get Fired Up for L’Oréal, Tallulah Willis’s Mom-Inspired Mane, and Haute Hair Secrets from The Hunger Games Set
It might not be a hair hue trend yet, but Karlie Kloss, Barbara Palvin, and Liya Kedebe are seeing red in their latest campaign for L’Oréal Paris’ Feria line. The brand shared snaps from behind the scenes of the shoot with Kloss captured in copper, Palvin rocking a ruby hue, and Kedebe boasting an auburn pixie. Hmm, we see a fiery hair color change for everyone when the final results are revealed! [Fashion Gone Rouge]
Sorry Toni, You’re not the only bald beauty anymore! Tallulah Willis channeled her mom Demi Moore by sporting the star’s iconic buzzcut from her role in G.I. Jane. Willis credited another iconic shaved head for the new look, Sinead O’Connor, captioning her Instagram snap as, “Portrait of a controversial ’90s Irish pop singer.” [Instagram]
With the beginning of the end on the horizon for The Hunger Games, we plan on taking our time saying goodbye to the Katniss braid. But for now we’re also getting cool details from the epic saga straight from the set’s lead hairstylist Camille Friend. Our favorite fact: President Coin’s icy grey locks were initially inspired by a husky’s dimensional fur. [Pop Sugar]
Though Kim Kardashian didn’t exactly break the Internet with her controversial Paper magazine cover, she did send everyone to the beauty aisle to snap up body oil in droves. If you want the same formula that was slathered on the reality star, you’ll have to wait until next year. It turns out it was the Black Seed Dry Oil from the upcoming Kardashian collaboration with CHI. At least we know it’ll make our strands shine! [Glamour]
We know Black Friday isn’t until next week (don’t worry; we’ve got your covered), but Elizabeth Arden is giving everyone a head start on HSN. The beauty brand will offer its classic Red Door gift set will be available on your small screens today at 7 p.m. If you’re a fan of their Green Tea or Untold fragrances, you won’t be left out, as they’ll be on the network’s site starting tonight. [Glam Inbox]
The winter air may be cold, but this December you’re sure to heat things up with a few attractive additions to your usual date-night routine. From your fragrance to your stilettos, a few special extras are certain to make the night unique.
Even if you’re the only one who knows it’s there, the right lingerie can make you feel fabulous. Silken separates in romantic rose are downright dreamy. Allowing a peek of the luxurious lace of your bra can be provocative. Wear an outfit that makes you feel fantastic, and complete the look with a pair sleek leather gloves and some hot heels. Pumps are never wrong, especially when they have an edge. (We have so much love for studs!)
As for your beauty routine, after you’ve accomplished your desired makeup look, add two tantalizing finishing touches. First, make sure to pack a moisturizing balm in your purse. Your pout will need a polish in the harsh December weather—don’t succumb to chapped lips! The crowning of your date-night look should be a spritz of a special scent synchronized with your playful style. Dare, the flirty new fragrance from GUESS, entices with notes of crisp kumquat, jasmine, and coconut-palm blend to create an irresistible fruity-floral aroma that will surely get you noticed.
We dare you to soften the seasonal chill with your sultry style, complete with these extra-swoon-worthy selections.
1. Keyhole Nappa Gloves, available at Henri Bendel for $138
2. Lilipiache Aromatic Poppy Bralette and Bikini, available at Journelle.com for $80 and $59, respectively
3. GUESS Dare Eau De Toilette, 3.4 ounces, available at Guess for $62
4. kiss me tonight intense lip therapy by philosophy, available at Philosphy.com for $21
5. Valentino Rockstud T-Strap Pumps, available at Neiman Marcus for $995
Same here, Giamba. And what a better way to do that than with his new flower-power lipstick line? The designer collaborated with MAC Cosmetics on a collection of lipsticks that are totally on-par with his covetable feminine frocks. The fresh hues, which will be available in summer 2015, range from a pale pink to the deepest of plums with a juicy peach, a rosy pink and a cherry red in between. Valli drew color inspiration from past collections to put out shades that would flatter all women.
MAC hit the nail on the head (he even brought them a cherry and asked them to match it—which they did), bringing Valli’s flowery vision full circle with brightly colored packaging. Though they have a matte finish, you can easily add a dose of shine with a touch of gloss. If this is the closest we’re going to get to Amal Clooney’s epic wedding weekend dress or Blake Lively’s enviable floral cocktail number, so be it. When it comes to design, Valli knows florals—and now, the same is true with makeup. And, let’s be honest, we’d rather a bouquet of lipsticks over flowers any day.
Beauty Buzz: Kylie Jenner Stumbles Into the #NoMakeupSelfie Stream, Anja Rubik Fashions a Fragrance, and Shape Up In-Shop at Saks
Kylie Jenner has unwittingly joined her sister Kim in the #nomakeup trend. During a traffic encounter with the police, Jenner was snapped in L.A. sans any stitch of makeup, and she looked perfectly fine! It’s good to let the face breathe once in a while, Kylie! [Racked]
Anja Rubik is heading to the fragrance counter with a scent all her own. Called Original, the new perfume is meant to be an affirmation of pure beauty. The spicy floral blends pink pepper, green tea, lily, and resin to channel the sultriness Rubik shows off in the Brigitte Bardot-inspired snaps. We need to add the perfume to our scent spice rack ASAP! [Fashion Gone Rouge]
Saks has something special in-store for beauty buffs. Called Beauty on 5, this new space in the New York flagship will offer beauty services for customers to indulge in the midst of their shopping sprees. Expect to see threading, tinting, and lash extensions from Blink Brow Bar; makeup services from Trish McEvoy’s beauty bar; and regular and gel manis as well as nail art from Nails Inc.’s Paint Workshop. We’d be happy to shop til we drop into a chair for a fresh mani! [WWD]
We’ve all had to handle that annoying pimple that pops up at the worst time, but a breakout in certain areas might indicate a different underlying issue. Face mapping is an ancient practice that connects how specific changes in the face can signal other problems in the body. So if more than one spot pops up on your chin you might want to check your hormone levels and keep stress at bay. [Byrdie]
STRIIKE, the salon, is finally opening its doors to more than Hollywood’s brightest, and the experience will be nothing less than VIP. The owners of the space, sisters Kristie, Ashley, and Jenn Streicher, are debuting a service called the Lightening Strike, where they will not only primp you to perfection but also steam your ensemble so you can quickly change and head out to your own red carpet. We’ll be sure to stop by next time we’re in LA-la-land! [The Hollywood Reporter]
Another red carpet year is coming to a close. As such, The Hollywood Reporter is honoring the hair and makeup glam squads behind the gorgeous looks from our favorite A-listers by ranking the year’s biggest beauty moments for its annual beauty issue. Here are our favorite picks.
Maria Sharapova has become a stunner on and off the court, most recently as the new face of Avon’s new Luck fragrance. The scent is an extravagant affair filled with fresh fruit, white florals, and the spice of sandalwood that’s meant to evoke hope and happiness. It seems like a perfect fit for the grand slam champion who also added a bit of the beauty counter to her personal brand this year. Glam got to chat with the all-star in between tennis tournaments to touch on her travel-friendly fitness and beauty regime, her surprising style icons, and when she last felt lucky herself:
On the last time she felt lucky:
I always feel like I’m rewarded with luck when I work extremely hard towards my goals. So I usually feel lucky when I win a championship point of a match. Sometimes it’s moments in my everyday life, especially when you’re close to the people that your love. You say, “Oh, I’m so lucky I get to experience those moments.”
On her healthy beauty routine
I think you need to find a good base of beauty to start a makeup regime, and for me that’s always about hydrating yourself and getting the right amount of sleep, which ultimately leads to beautiful, glowing skin. It all the same stuff that we’re well-aware of, but sometimes don’t give enough attention to. So when I wake up in the morning, I have a huge bottle of water next to my bed, and it’s just a constant reminder, “Ok, we’re going to start out the day on a clean note and freshen the body.” I always apply sun protection no matter if it’s sunny or cloudy outside. I use Supergoop products, and I’ve used them for many years. I love their serum; I use it as my makeup base in the morning.
I also love good deep tissue massages, especially when I come home from a long trip. I always try to catch up with my friends, and we sometimes go for a drive to the spa that’s maybe an hour and a half away so we can spend time and talk and treat ourselves to a massage.
On getting out to amplify her workout:
I try to exercise outdoors as much as I can. I live in a warm climate, and I have the opportunity to do that. It’s really getting yourself in the mindset of forgetting that you’re working out or maybe taking a class that you wouldn’t normally take, just putting your body in different atmosphere. It sometimes gets you more motivated than if you have a set schedule to do weekly or daily.
On her style staples and icons:
I think investment cashmere pieces take you such a long way–not just this winter but the next one. So I always love those in neutral colors and different knits. I travel so much, so my lifestyle’s built around my suitcase. Scarves are an essential. My wardrobe is really about layering and putting things together. I have a more masculine direction in the clothes I wear, so I like loose-fitting pieces that I can layer whether I’m mixing high and low–such as Rick Owens or Zara. Leather pants that have a bit more volume in them; I not crazy about tight leather leggings, but things that have a little room to move around with and carry with you throughout the whole day.
[In terms of style icons], I’ve always admired Audrey Hepburn; I love her elegant pearls and black dress look [from Breakfast at Tiffany’s.] I also love people who carry themselves with carry themselves with the right amount of confidence and style, like Gwen Stefani. I don’t think I could ever pull off that style, but [I love] how she goes about so confident in her skin and what she’s wearing that she pulls it off brilliantly.
