Lupita Nyong’o’s Is The World’s Most Beautiful Woman

By  April 23, 2014

We had a feeling this would be no contest: Lupita Nyong’o is People’s Most Beautiful Woman in the World!

It’s no surprise since the screen and style star had everyone doing a double take throughout awards season, starting with her ruby red Ralph Lauren and culminating in her Prada Nairobi blue and Oscar gold. She’s also the third African American to land the coveted cover, joining the like of Halle Berry and Beyoncé. Funny thing is, Nyong’o never dreamed she would receive this year’s title. “It was exciting and just a major, major compliment,” she told the glossy. “I was happy for all the girls who would see me on [it] and feel a little more seen.”

She’s spoken openly about learning to love her own beauty outside of society’s standards, but it doesn’t mean she was afraid to experiment. Along with her rainbow of matching shadows and lippies, her hair has also undergone major transformations, including shaving it all off! “It was very strange and very cold!” she laughed. “It was scary but I like to dare myself.”

Though Lancôme’s latest leading lady regularly plays with color, she feels her most beautiful without a stitch of makeup on. Her explanation? “Happiness is the most important thing,” she said. Excuse us while we do a happy dance!

Kristen Bell, Jenna Dewan Tatum, and More Are Body Beautiful in Allure

By  April 22, 2014

Body confidence can be a struggle on a day-to-day basis, but Kristen Bell, Jenna Dewan Tatum, Minnie Driver, and Nia Long are out to change everyone’s perceptions by taking it all off for Allure.

The glossy’s annual nude photo shoot began in 2009 by featuring four stars, not only to  share the natural beauty of the body, but to also address self-esteem. This year’s batch of stripped-down stars join alumnae like Padma Lakshmi, Kaley Cuoco, Maria Menounos, and Naya Rivera, to name a few.

The stars each revealed the body parts that they love, their opinions on body doubles, and even shared what parts made them feel self-conscious. “I never could have done this when I was 25—no way,” Driver told the magazine. “All I saw then were the flaws. I still see the flaws, but I see what’s great more—and I’ve got a banging body.”

The shoot was extra special for Bell and Tatum, as both recently gave birth to daughters. “I was terribly frightened that I would feel like a schlub and not at all beautiful,” Bell explained about her pregnancy. “When I looked in the mirror, I saw Cindy Crawford…I talk a big game about being comfortable no matter my size. I wanted to put my money where my mouth was.”

While  some serious gym time and diet adjustments contributed to the final result, we have to give kudos to the lovely ladies who were confident in showing some serious skin and pushing everyone to be braver when it comes to their own bodies. Whatever your opinion on nudity, everyone should be comfortable in their own skin.

By  April 22, 2014

Yadim is moving up from the backstage area to the spotlight as Maybelline’s new Global Makeup artist.

The mononym behind Rihanna’s Balmain beauty, Lady Gaga’s applause-worthy makeup, and Gisele’s romantic glow will be the go-to guy to help set the trends and take them from the runway to the real way for beauty buffs of any skill level.  His position will feature in on the brand’s recently resurrected City blog, where his likely to work with Maybelline’s freshest face, Jourdan Dunn. “Having the opportunity to work with a brand that has made makeup trends accessible to all women is a dream come true,” said Yadim. “I look forward to engaging with the consumer in ways that will make her feel welcomed, empowered and connected to Maybelline in a new way.”

Yadim has been a rising star in the backstage scene for years, previously working with makeup maven Pat McGrath, before going his own way in 2010. We spotted him backstage at Yigal Azrouël back in February, and he went on to key at Haider Ackerman during Paris Fashion Week. We’re so excited to see Yadim reaching new heights,–as Riri would say, “Shine bright!”

Jennifer Lawrence Nails This Year’s Top Chop

By  April 21, 2014

If it freaked out Jennifer Lawrence when her pixie grabbed national headlines, she may need to prep herself once again for her newest style.

Though the star has been out of the spotlights since the Oscars, Lawrence was spotted rocking a boxy, textured chop on her way to a taping of Good Morning America on Sunday to promote X-Men: Days of Future Past. The look has become a big hair trend this year thanks to the likes of Jessica Alba, Rita, Ora, Taylor Swift, and many others sporting the shorter strands.

During awards season she found a slew of styles to sweep her growing pixie into, but hasn’t had the same awkward hair phase as other celebs have in growing out their cropped coifs. What do you think of J. Law’s new look?

We’d love to know what Paltrow’s favorite drugstore buys are, as may of her favorite things are more aspirational. What would you ask the actress?

4 Tress Tips for Longer-Lasting Hair Color

By  April 21, 2014

If you took a peek at my Instagram over the weekend, you saw that my strands underwent the Jared Leto treatment, but with a twist. Colorist Aura Friedman, the woman behind Molly Sims’s transformation from blonde bombshell to radiant redhead, gave me an oxblood ombré that I’ve fallen head over heels for. With loads of ladies switching their strand shade as well (candy colors included), I turned to the colorist for a few tips to make my new hair hue last. Here’s what you should keep in mind if you opt for a color change:

Wind Down the Washing – Water is one of the biggest threats to vibrant color–as your follicles open up to receive  moisture, the dye also washes out. It’s recommended that you don’t shampoo your strands more than once a week, but if you simply can’t hold out that long, Friedman recommends using Nexxus’s Color Assure Primer prior to washing “to seal in the color vibrancy and seal out the damaging effects of water.” Another option? Dry shampoo.

Protect Your Pigment – Along with keeping your dyed ‘do primed against waterlog, surfactants and sulfates from shampoos can strip the color you worked so hard to achieve. Stick to color protecting shampoo and conditioner combos like the brand Color Assure line to gently cleanse and condition.

Mask In Moisture – Masking can not only revive damaged tresses, but also moisturize to help your hair better retain pigment. Friedman favors the brand’s Humectress Deep Conditioning Treatment once a week, but those with blonde ambitions should also add Nexxus’s Emergencée Conditioning Treatment to strengthen strands. “Platinum blonde or anything like that you need protein once a month to every two weeks,” she advised. “If you do it too often it makes your hair brittle.”

Stop the Shade Zap – Heat styling can also fade the color of your coif if you’re not careful. Heat protectants like the Color Assure Glossing Tonic provides a barrier between the styling tools and your strands to reduce damage. “Any product you put on your hair before you dry can protect your hair from heat. The product is what gets the heat first, so it’s coating the hair with a protective layer,” Friedman explained.

3 Simple Steps to Avoiding Dry Skin

By  April 21, 2014

Dry skin getting you down? Follow these three easy steps to keep your skin moisturized this spring.

  1. Drinking enough water has a direct effect on your skin. To keep skin supple and soft, consume at least eight glasses a day. And avoid caffeine—it’s a diuretic and will suck you dry.
  2. Nix hot showers. It can be tempting to turn up the heat when you’re sudsing, but overly hot temps can strip skin of its natural moisture barrier, and that barrier is necessary to keep your skin hydrated.
  3. Lock in hydration right after you towel off from your lukewarm shower. If your skin is still damp, it’s more likely to absorb a moisturizer.

Rita Ora’s Beauty Haul Could Compete with Any Beauty Closet

By  April 18, 2014

We editors have formidable collections of cosmetics to swatch and sample, but Rita Ora’s collection is quite the contender.

The British beauty shared her (or her makeup artist’s) product haul late on Thursday via Instagram with the hashtag #fixthismug. Upon closer inspection, we spied Dior, Chanel, YSL, amongst the big beauty brands and brushes housed in 8 large makeup cases. There’s a few Rimmel lippies and mascara wands hidden in her batch of makeup musts, as she’s the current face of the brand.

While we know she doesn’t need every item to achieve her flawless skin, perfectly precise winged liner, and classic red lip, we wonder if celebrity beauty hauls might become an Instagram meme (we’d love to see Solange and Jessica Alba‘s personal beauty buys). If not, it’s good to know she’s organized so she can get glam on the go.

Intercos Taps Top Beauty Trends for Its Latest Innovations

By  April 18, 2014

Intercos has restructured its company to make way for its newest launches with color schemes that paired up perfectly with the runway’s top trends. Its trend forecast has seen the world’s runways to craft creative ways to rock the hautest looks of the season.

For its Fluid Trance, the beauty brand looked to the wet, mirrored look that set spring up. With liquid-effect powders, roller ball applicators, and sponge-on large pencils in electric shades of aqua, violet, and pink, the new makeup musts tap into looks from spring runway shows, like the dampened locks of Herve Leger and Yigal Azrouel and glossy lids at Derek Lam and Alexander Wang.

Intercos’ Nomadic Luxe seemed straight from Mara Hoffman’s signature beauty aesthetic with earthy metals. Seventies influences take form in haute hues like burned copper and cracked gold for loose powders with intricate designs and a stamp-on tattoo pen.

Beautiful Illusion’s mostly muted palette was designed to enhance and play with the face’s natural contours. It includes Double Usage mascaras and pencils, which were inspired by no-makeup makeup looks that came courtesy of BCBGMAXAZRIA (for both seasons), Elizabeth and James, among others.

Though the brand cited Legos, cartoons, and neon lighting as inspiration for its Live Animation batch of hair chalks and lipsticks, it captured the candy colors that celebs have started rocking in their tresses. While most shows strayed away from the intense pops pigments, The Blonds and Rag & Bone found ways to electrify their ladies.

Regardless of which buckets you want to fall into, it looks like Intercos has found new ways to try on these trends.
