Beauty Buzz: Estée Lauder Loves Linda Rodin, Nicole Richie’s Midnight Mane, Roberto Cavalli’s Bliss in a Bottle

By  October 31, 2014

Estée Lauder is closing deals left and right, and their latest is Linda Rodin’s luxe skincare brand Rodin Olio Lusso. Known as the “ultimate ‘insider’ beauty brand,” its range of body oil, hand and body creams, perfume, soap, scented candles, and even hair oil will likely be seen on many more shelves thanks to the deal. Fabrizio Freda, Lauder’s president and chief executive officer, praised the brand’s potential, saying, “With its luxurious product line and strong creative point of view, we believe it has the potential to be a high-growth global skin-care brand that strategically enhances our portfolio.” [WWD]

Hair [color] today gone tomorrow, eh, Nicole Richie? The #CandidlyNicole star switched her shade in time for Halloween, debuting a midnight blue hue at the at the House of Harlow 1960 Jewelry Launch Party earlier this month. If she keeps this up she may have her own rainbow meme before the end of year! [Refinery 29]

Roberto Cavalli has found paradise and put it in a bottle that will hit shelves in 2015. Called Paradiso, the new woody floral blends bergamot, mandarin orange, jasmine, chord of cypress, pink laurel, and parasol pine, lifting the brand’s natural hedonism to a higher plane. But don’t get confused, there’s no religious connotation here, as Cavalli himself explained, “Paradiso is about a moment of happiness. I wanted to give a feeling of that instant when you feel totally at ease… [and] being with the woman I love.” [WWD]

Skin Research Laboratories is stepping away from the hair enhancers to smooth our skin. The brand has just released its first skin polish, neuRadiance that uses bromelain enzyme from pineapples, shea butter, and magnesium crystals sourced from the Dead Sea to slough off dead skin without irritating pores. As the brand’s chief executive officer and founder Richard A. Carieri pointed out, “We use magnesium that’s not too rough and is healthy for the body should some remain on the skin.” [WWD]

Save Your Skin from a Post-Halloween Breakout

By  October 31, 2014

You’ve spent hours searching, shopping, and stepping out all to show off your amazing Halloween costume. But after the cocktails are gone and the selfies are snapped it’s time to wash up and face the real world once again. All of the pigments and glitter you’ve applied certainly won’t come off easily, so here are a few way to clean up and return to your normal self without sacrificing your skin in the process.

post-halloween-makeup-removalFace Off – No matter how sleepy you are, it’s never a good idea to sleep in your makeup. You can use an oil-based makeup remover like Lancôme’s Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover to tackle the tough stuff such as waterproof mascara and any glue from prosthetics. If you’re too tuckered out, Clearasil’s Daily Clear Hydra-Blast Facial Wipes are formulated with salicylic acid to keep pores open and reduce inflammation while cleaning them out.

Scrub-A-Dub-Dub – There’s nothing that powers through makeup, oil, and dirt in pores better than a good scrub. If you’re a bit of a beauty techy, Clarisonic’s Sonic Radiance Brightening Solution system can help deep clean, reduce dark spots, and revive your skin’s natural radiance. If you prefer to use your hands, St. Ives’s Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub is a classic to deeply exfoliate and invigorate dull skin after wiping away your costume.

Maximize Moisture – After getting your complexion squeaky clean, it will definitely need a drink to rebalance itself. If your skin feels tight or rough, the avocado and apricot kernel oil in Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask can quench its thirst and repair the skin’s moisture barrier. If you need to keep it light, you can layer your regular moisturizer with a few drops of Josie Maran’s Pure Argan Milk Intensive Hydrating Treatment. It pairs purified water with micro-droplets of Maran’s signature Argan oil to deeply hydrate.

Happy Halloween!

Barely There Beauty: 6 Steps to Nailing the Natural Look

By  October 31, 2014

When makeup mavens talk about re-creating the bare-faced beauty look that’s swept up recent runway seasons, they don’t mean it’s time to push aside products altogether. In fact, the natural looks seen on the fall and winter 2014 models for Alexander Wang, Stella McCartney, Balmain, and Chloe were created with plenty of makeup—it just wasn’t meant to be seen. The barely there look relies on several beauty products, but all are designed to enhance features rather than redefine them. Here’s how to get the look.
The foundation of the au naturel look is, well, foundation. The focus should be on creating a smooth, seamless, blemish-free face without the appearance of actual makeup. While this may seem like an impossible-to-accomplish contradiction, CoverGirl TRUblend Liquid Makeup makes it possible. Available in 21 shades, the lightweight, water-based formula features a new color-matching system to perfectly coordinate your skin tone to its corresponding blend. Matching your skin tone is the first step in producing the clear canvas required for the barely there beauty look. Blend using clean fingertips or a sponge, then watch the makeup virtually disappear still while camouflaging small imperfections. Follow up on darker spots with the TRUblend Fixstick Concealer, which is designed to cover harder-to-conceal discolorations without a cakey effect.

As for powder, pat a problematic T-zone with TRUblend Pressed Powder, in unison with the liquid formula. Which you use is up to you—both work equally well. Just make sure to complete the look with a touch of bronzer for a naturally sun-kissed look. A swipe of the light-reflecting CoverGirl TRUblend Minerals Bronzer along your forehead, nose, and cheekbones will do just that.

When it comes to eyes, lashes, and brows, less is more. Begin by making sure your brows are properly groomed but not overdone. They should appear maintained but not barren. As a matter of fact, full brows are ideal for this look. And rather than relying on mascara, use the CoverGirl Makeup Masters Lash Curler to create longer, more dramatic lashes without the use of cosmetics. Finish by adding just a touch of shimmer on your lids; we like the CoverGirl Bombshell ShineShadow by LashBlast in Gold Goddess. Your eyes will dazzle when the light hits them.

Last but not least: le lips. Skip high-voltage hues and instead go with a balm that will keep your pout pretty with just a hint of color and shine. The CoverGirl Lipslicks Smoochies Lip Balm is the perfect solution. Just remember to pick a shade that matches your natural lip color.

Vanessa Hudgens and Catt Sadler Spill On Their Seasonal Switch Up

By  October 30, 2014

This October served up a very stylish reminder that green definitely is gorgeous. Beautified in benefit of Global Green USA’s 10th Annual Gorgeous and Green Gala, a slew of celebs–from Louise Roe to Goldie Hawn–took to San Francisco for an evening in celebration of environmental consciousness in all elements of life, including fashion and cosmetology. As leaders of chic style, from their heels to their hair, these were ladies whose eco-friendly tips and tricks were ones to take to heart. Natural,  cruelty-free skincare, for example, keeps these famous faces both green and gorgeous. And for their killer looks? Organic cotton, vegan leather, renewably sourced materials, and vintage treasures were on everyone’s love list.

Both Catt Sadler and Vanessa Hudgens did more than share their green agenda, though. These beauties also showed off new ‘dos fit for fall and spilled on the inspirations behind their seasonal strand switch up. That’s right–Sadler in lightened locks and bangs, and Hudgens with red tips, both turned heads with their haute hair along the “green carpet.”

Sadler got straight to the point: “I have access to the most amazing stylists in the world and I take full advantage,” the E! News host gushed. She worked with the hairstylists to create some oomph via bangs, and her reasoning rocked. “I’ll tell you more information than you probably want to know. This is the thinnest part of my hair, up here by my roots,” she admitted. “I saw the September issue of Vogue and saw that a lot of the campaigns had bangs again.” Her muse was none other than model Suki Waterhouse. “I was all over her Instagram going ‘This is the hair I want.’”

As for Hudgens, she’s no stranger to cut and color, having already rocked an all-over coppery gloss, long beachy waves, green dip-dyed ends, a short ombre lob, just to name a few. Her undone up-do of both extensions and her natural locks at the gala, though, featured a new fiery twist. Her inspiration? “Halloween” I’m going to be a vampire and I thought that there wasn’t anything more vampy than red hair.”

Acuvue Breaks into Beauty with Innovative New Lenses

By  October 30, 2014

Acuvue wants women to start thinking a little differently about how they line their eyes. The contact lens brand is breaking into the beauty market with the introduction of a new product called 1-Day Acuvue Define. The design of the lens enhances the limbal ring—the dark circle around the iris—which research has shown increases a person’s perceived attractiveness. A more defined limbal ring not only makes eyes look more youthful and multidimensional, it also gives the appearance of larger pupils and creates greater contrast against the rest of the eye to make the whites appear even whiter.

While new to the US, 1-Day Acuvue Define has actually dominated the beauty lens category in Asia for quite some time now. However, unlike color contacts and other novelty lenses, 1-Day Acuvue Define does not mask the natural appearance of your eye. Instead, the lens uses designs inspired by the existing patterns in your iris to bring out a more multidimensional look–much like how highlights brighten and accentuate the texture of hair. They are available in vision correcting prescriptions (unfortunately, not yet available for those with astigmatism) or as plano non-corrective lenses for those who just want the cosmetic boost. As for the immediate beauty benefits? Well let’s just say that’s pretty easy to see.

Beauty Buzz: Kylie Jenner’s Love of Lip Liner, Feline Flick Hacks for National Cat Day, and Pat McGrath Says No to the Nude Face

By  October 29, 2014

Is it a simple as a little (or a lot) of lip liner, Kylie? Kim Kardashian has entered the fray of Lipgate, providing insight on how Kylie Jenner achieves her plump pout minus any added collagen. In an interview with the YouTube channel Pixiwoo, Mrs. West explained, “I go into her room, and I’m like, ‘What liner do you wear?,’ because she only wears a lip liner, and then she fills it in [with the same liner. She doesn’t wear lipstick or a gloss. She goes between [M.A.C.'s] Soar and Spice [pencils]. I use Stripdown.” Problem solved? [People]

A cat eye is a classic look and the most difficult makeup technique to master. But in honor of National Cat Day, we’re brushing up on our skills to achieve the wing with helpful hints from top makeup artists like Troy Surratt, Janessa Paré, and James Vincent. Meow! [Refinery 29]

According to the Fall runways, the no-makeup look is in, but Pat McGrath’s newest editorial is putting that trend to bed. The makeup maestro whipped up a slew of sultry smoky eyes in a rainbow of jewel tones for Cosmopolitan’s December issue, pairing them with professionally tousled tresses and warm winter wears from Giles, Simone Rocha, and Preen. Time to break out the rainbow eye palette! [Fashion Gone Rogue]

We admit we don’t get to the dermatologist as often as we’d like but, like everything else, there’s now an app for that. For $20 a month, the PocketDerm puts you in touch with a board-certified dermo via virtual chat plus a cream specifically formulated for you that arrives as often as you may need it. Additional prescriptions will have to come out of our own pockets, so we have to ask: does it take our insurance? [XO Vain]

VIVA-GLAM-Miley-CyrusMAC Cosmetics has just announced the pop paramour as the face for its 2015 Viva Glam Campaign–and its none other than Miley Cyrus!

The New Year will heat up starting January 22, as Cyrus debuts her eponymous hot pink lipstick and matching Lipglass. She follows in the footsteps of other pop culture icons including Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Cyndi Lauper, and Nicki Minaj. As always, every penny from the sales of the lush lippies will benefit the brand’s Viva Glam campaign, which supports men, women, and children living with and affected by HIV and AIDS.

After Cyrus forewent her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards to bring attention to youth homelessness earlier this year, it doesn’t surprise us that she would use her striking star power to raise awareness for another worthy cause. Keep up the good work, Miley!
