Dolce & Gabbana Plays With Mom’s Vanity for Fall 2015

By  March 02, 2015

Mama mia! Dolce & Gabbana surprised the chic set with a collection dedicated to mothers from all over the world, even including a model mommy-to-be rocking the runway with the regulars.  In order to create that gorgeous maternal glow, the dynamic design duo turned to the one and only Pat McGrath and Guido Palau to channel iconic matriarchs like Monica Bellucci, Jackie O, and, of course, Sophia Loren.

McGrath started with the brand’s signature Primer to illuminate the skin before applying the Perfect Matte Liquid Foundation for a velvet finish. The skin was contoured with a blend of The Blush in Delight and Mauve Diamond before sealing it with pressed powder and highlighting the high points of the face with The Eva Illuminator. McGrath crafted a contoured eye with a blend of The Eyeshadow Quad in Desert and the Perfect Mono Eyeshadow in Leo Brown in the crease, with a pop of gold on the lid and a dusting of Antique Rose. She then added a feline flick to the upper lashes with The Glam Liner in black, amplifying the lower lashes with the Chocolate Kohl Pencil and The Eyeliner in Nude and a few coats of mascara. To finish the look, McGrath painted on the Dolce Matte Lipstick in 13 shades of iconic red with some models getting a swipe of the Classic Cream Lipstick in Antique Rose for contrast.

As for the tresses, Palau styled messy chignons, first blowing out the hair with Redken’s Wind Blown texturizing spray to resemble a multi-tasking mom quickly pinning up her strands. He added extra sparkle with strands of pearl headbands and bejeweled headpieces to look as though models had dug through mom’s trinket box.

Regardless of whether your have a little one of your own, this classic look is appropriate for all occasions – bejeweled bands included.

I Woke Up Like This: Nude Nails

By  March 02, 2015

Remember that whole nail art thing? Yeah, we do too. Call us crazy, but the thought of psychedelic geometric patterns taking up residence in our nail beds for yet another season is giving us a serious headache. Soooo 2014, right? Also super complicated and way too much work.

In an effort to uncomplicated our lives in 2015 (New Years Resolutions, anyone?), this season we are all about going nude. Because what do you do when you are tired of using all of the colors of polish at once? You do the opposite – go neutral. Besides, what better way to avoid disasters of the chipped nail polish variety than to pick a color that is nearly identical to your skin. Here are a few of our favorite nudes that are sure to keep us well-manicured without forcing a bi-weekly move into the nail salon.

Tom Ford Nail Lacquer in Toasted Sugar, $32

RGB + HIPP Nail Foundation in F1, $18

Christian Louboutin “The Nudes” Nail Color in Simply Nude, $50.00

Essie Nail Polish in Like Linen, $8.50

Heal Your Hands with This All Natural Mask

By  February 27, 2015

There are all kinds of wonderful ways to moisturize your hands in the harshest months of the year. Most of those ways involve purchasing a pricey hand cream or gel gloves or going to get a paraffin wax treatment. What if I told you there was a way for you to soften your hands without all of that? What if I told you that you could whip up a solution to solve your seasonal hand dryness right there in your own kitchen?

Allow me to introduce you to Natural Beauty Alchemy, a new recipe book by Fifi M. Maacaron that offers you a road map to making your own organic cleansers, creams, serums and shampoos. The recipes themselves are pretty easy, and often the ingredients can be found in your kitchen! Take for example, her Weather Shield Mask. It’s intended as a winter rescue remedy for dry and rough hands. Read on for the recipe!

Weather Shield Mask by Fifi M. Maacaron

4 small potatoes, peeled, cooked, and mashed
1 ounce (30 ml) heavy cream
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon lemon juice
10 drops (0.5 ml) vitamin E

1. Mix the above ingredients well until a uniform paste is formed.

Gwyneth Paltrow Gets Goopy with Juice Beauty

By  February 27, 2015

Gwyneth Paltrow is getting Goop-y with organic skincare line Juice Beauty and going beyond one-off collaboration by investing in the brand.

Paltrow instantly clicked with the brand’s founder Karen Behnke when they met. The pair drew up a five-year plus renewal agreement, making the actress the brand’s new creative director and shareholder and even had Juice Beauty invest in Goop. It marked the second beauty business Paltrow’s put her power behind after Blo Blow Dry Bar. It offered a chance for both to build their business without playing into a regular endorsement deal. “It was really important to me to not just hire a face or do an endorsement type of deal,” Behnke told Women’s Wear Daily. “It was more important for me to align goals and values and find a true business partner.”

Paltrow agreed. “I wanted to move away from the celebrity endorsement aspect,” she explained. “I’m very appreciative of all the endorsements I’ve gotten in the past and there’s always been integrity there, but I’m really focused on building [the lifestyle Web site] Goop and using that celebrity aspect of my life to further enrich my own brand.”

Their first project together is a new makeup range with 75 beauty buys for eyes, lips, faces, and cheeks that will hit selves later this year for $24 to $49. Paltrow will have input on the packaging design, colors, and formulation that promises high pigments and performance without compromising its organic ingredients. Plus, the pair also have a six new skincare products that will be exclusive to Goop in early 2016. “In my own life, I don’t have a [beauty] product that is as luxurious and high performing as it is clean,” admitted Paltrow. “I’m very aware of the toxicity in our products that we use all the time. I still use a lot of them because they work, whether it’s shampoo or mascara.”

Goop-y gals, mark your calendars now!

Beauty Buzz: Chrissy Teigen Turns to the Dark Side, Celebs Celebrate Loc Love, and Lily Collins Picks Up a Pixie

By  February 26, 2015

Say bye, bye to Chrissy Teigen’s blonde strands, as she’s switched back to brunette. The mega model posted a snap from colorist David Lopez’s salon chair during the process with Lopez sharing a picture of the results. With her bombshell hair, fierce cat-eye, and crop top and shorts, she’s not smoldering, she’s smokin’! [Refinery 29]

While the Oscars red carpet served up a slew of gorgeous gowns, it wasn’t without controversy. Zendaya stepped out for Hollywood’s biggest night wearing dreadlock extensions that didn’t sit well with Fashion Police’sGuiliana Rancic who said she “smells like patchouli oil. Or, weed.” While the comment started a firestorm and even prompted Kelly Osbourne to question her position on the show, Zendaya took it in stride, responding with a poignant Instagram post. The starlet received loads of support from the likes of Taraji P. Henson, Solange, and many more to celebrate the beauty of African American hair and forgave Rancic for her comments. Melissa Rivers shared a #TBT snap of the star and her mother before she had passed, captioning it with, “We [at the show] have nothing but love for Zendaya then and now. A repeat guest host.” Judge not, lest ye be judged, we guess. [Instagram]

This pixie pop up is turning into a trend, as Lily Collins is the latest to try out the trend. The star stunned when she stepped out for Vanity Fair’s post-Oscars soiree, posting snaps to her Instagram with the hashtag #shorthairandlovingit. This comes on the heels of Rita Ora’s cropped coif, who also debuted her look on the Grammys red carpet. Let the hairstyle battle of 2015 begin! [Glamour]

Jin Soon is brightening up our spring forecast with a fresh collaboration with Tila March’s Tamara Taichman. The brands came together to curate a collection of five vibrant nail hues drawn from the brand’s signature patent leather bags, including a new one exclusive to the set, the Jin Vanity Case that will house the polish bottles in a compartment and will be available in all of the hues. As Jin Soon Choi explained, “Tamara and I wanted to create five on-trend hues that make a statement on their own and are even more powerful as a collection. When put together, the shades represent a beautiful painting.” [Glam Inbox]

Editor’s Pick: Kai Body Glow

Discover your next obsession with our Editor’s Pick series, must-have products for your home, wardrobe, makeup bag, and office curated by Glam editors.

Kai Body Oil

There’s a reason Kai Fragrance has a cult following (and was deemed one of Oprah’s favorite things in 2007). Made with white flowers like gardenia, the fragrance is fresh and beachy but in a sophisticated way, made for the chic but laidback lady as she moves through the adventures of her life. If the scrumptious scent doesn’t sell you, then know that all Kai products are made in the USA using high-quality, paraben, sulfate, phthalate, and phosphate free materials.

There’s only one fragrance in the Kai line, and that’s their signature scent mentioned above. If you’re a fan of the perfume it’s pretty much a given that you’ll soon be addicted to the rest of the Kai collection too, from deodorant to candles. Most recently, I added the Kai Body Glow, a dry oil spray that moisturizes and hydrates your skin, to my beauty routine. Gentle yet effective, the moisturizing body spray leaves your skin glowing, not greasy. Oils can be messy, but this particular spray bottle allows you to evenly distribute the product without waste. I spray my body glow onto damp skin after the shower to maximize the softness of my skin and the allure of the fragrance, which remains present all day. And believe me when I say people have noticed, asking what I’m wearing and paying their compliments. So long as you’re ready for some scent admirers!

Kai Body Glow, $34

Day in the Life: Poppy King, Founder of Lipstick Queen

By  February 26, 2015

Poppy King started her journey to lipstick bliss when she just 18 when she couldn’t find the perfect formula for her favorite makeup must. The search spurred her on to create Lipstick Queen where she developed lush lipsticks in an array of colors and textures with many becoming cult classics, including Hello Sailor, Medieval, and more. As she explained, “For me, nothing is as glamorous or as empowering as lipstick. It doesn’t just brighten up my face, it fires up my confidence, making me feel like I can take on the world!” Glam caught up with the pout perfector as she jets around the city to keep up with a slew of meetings and works on her freshest formulas from the comfort of home:

7:00 a.m. My day starts with a shower, coffee, and meditation. All three kick start me into action and get me ready for the day. Meditation in particular is extremely powerful for helping me feel balanced and focused on what I need to do that day. After that I sit down at my computer to address any urgent emails that will have come in overnight from our international markets.
8:30 a.m. A little breakfast or cereal and almond milk and then I get dressed. My wardrobe is a bit like a fun park and getting dressed is a really enjoyable part of the day. I’m obsessed with glamour and I love everything associated with it – bags, shoes…and lipstick of course!

9:30 a.m. My days are typically made up of three things: product, press, and people. The product element is where I work on dreaming up new concepts/ranges. I deal with vendors, I feedback on submissions, I research new products and write briefs for our suppliers. For the press side of my day, I do email and telephone interviews, I meet with editors, and I present new products. Finally, the people side of my day involves meetings and I regularly meet with the Lipstick Queen team or my designer James who is an extremely talented illustrator. He creates all the wonderful imagery you find on Lipstick Queen packaging and we have worked together since the very beginning of Lipstick Queen.

1:00 p.m. Although I work from home, I often take meetings at a local café – one of my favorites at the moment is El Ray where they do a  fantastic kale salad.

2:00 p.m. Back home to answer emails and continue working on my latest projects. At the moment I am developing a new range of colors, based on a concept I first came up with nearly 25 years ago. When it comes to my career, I’m definitely more of a long distance runner than a sprinter and sometimes formulas and concepts can take years to perfect. With a new range, I line up the colors from deep to light, to see the progression of color, trying each one on. I then phone conference with the lab to go over the adjustments that need to be made.

6:30pm Bikram yoga class with my wonderful friend Tricia Donegan on the Lower East side.
8:30 p.m. Dinner out with friends, most likely somewhere in my neighborhood, the Lower East Side which I love because it is so culturally diverse.
11:30 p.m. Bed!

Steven Klein is a Narssist

By  February 26, 2015

François Nars is once again merging his love of makeup and visual arts with his latest collaboration with world-class fashion shutterbug Steven Klein.

The pair has joined forces for a limited edition collection that will hit shelves just in time for the holidays, bringing Klein’s vision and unique sense of color to shades we’re sure to love. While the details of the collection are under tight wraps, beauty buffs can expect 23 makeup must-haves to add to your wish list with a lush campaign shot but Fabien Baron of Baron & Baron to bring the collaboration to life.

It’s an especially exciting endeavor for Nars himself, who has been a fan of Klein’s raw and audacious approach to photography since his start. “Steven is one of the most disruptive, fearless photographers of his time,” he said. “I love his work– his ability to strip down and expose his subjects, to create shocking visual narratives that are never what they seem.”

The feeling was mutual. “I am honored to be asked by François to collaborate on this NARS project with him, based on the previous artists he had worked with – Andy Warhol and Guy Bourdin,” Klein said. “I have always had the highest regard for François’ work. He was the pioneer of moving from one of the greatest makeup artists to creating great makeup. There are few hands that could do what François has done. He has impeccable taste and stands strong by his work. His colors and his eye for imagery is unique and of the highest caliber.”

With their penchant for striking colors and imagery, we can’t wait to see what the pair have created!

Soft Hands. Soft Feet. 3 Ways To Tenderize Those Mitts

By  February 24, 2015

Your hands and feet are undoubtedly the workhorses of your body. They do a tremendous amount and suffer the consequences. If you’ve got rough, dry hands and feet at this time of year, you need to know that you’re not alone. Winter is the worst time for your skin’s moisture, and it’s a peak time for cracked heels and painfully dry hands. If you’re looking to avoid it all as much as possible and somehow restore your paws to a touchable state, then read on. Here are 4 foolproof methods for softer hands and feet.

320-spa-glovesFuzzy Socks and Exfoliation
There are many hand exfoliation products on the market, but you can DIY a hand and foot scrub at home, just by combining turbinado sugar, olive oil and a few drops of lemon juice for brightening. Scrubbing away the rough, dry and flaky skin is a great place to begin effective moisturizing. After exfoliating, apply a deeply penetrating shea or cocoa butter based hand or foot cream, and slide on fuzzy socks or gloves for overnight absorption. This brings us to the next method…

Quality Creams
Part of the problem may be the kind of moisturizer you’re using. Recognizing the difference between mere lotion and creams and butters is just the beginning. For deeply penetrative and sealing hand and foot moisture, many swear by Vaseline or Bag Balm.

Try Paraffin Treatments
Fun fact – paraffin wax treatments were originally intended to treat arthritis in the 1950’s! Today they remain popular at nail salons to soften and moisturize hands and feet. Paraffin is an oil based wax. There ARE at home paraffin baths, but IMO it is best applied by professionals (as most beauty regimens involving hot wax tend to be). Your hands or feet will be dipped in wax a few times to ensure complete coverage, and then left to cool. The end result? Incredibly soft hands or feet.

Gel-Lined Gloves and Socks
Fuzzy socks are wonderful, but fuzzy socks lined with GEL? Heavenly for your feet. Many of the top gel gloves and socks are lined with moisturizing ingredients like jojoba oil or vitamin E. To step up your soft hands/soft feet program, check out the Bliss Softening Socks and Bliss Glamour Gloves.
