Mindy Kaling is the latest to share some of her beauty secrets à la Kim Kardashian. The comedienne shared a snap of herself behind the scenes of her eponymous show rocking a full hot roller set and lighter foundation applied at high points of her face prior to blending it out into contoured perfection. Her explanation was spot on: “Before you look pretty first you have to look f—–g weird.” [Glamour]

Evangeline Lilly has shortened her strands to join Paul Rudd on the set of Ant-Man. The actress shared a snap with her co-star and a side view of her new look after snipping her tresses into the signature chin-length bob of her character Hope Van Dyne. Cara Delevingne clearly isn’t camera shy when it comes to showing a little skin, but her newest campaign with Tom Ford takes it to the next level. Aligning with Ford’s penchant for provocative imagery, Delevingne is featured in the ads for the designer’s new Black Orchid Perfume lounging in a floral dotted pool sans a stitch of clothing. There’s a new nail essential you’ll want to snap up on your next blind date or a girls’ night out. Developers at N.C. State University have formulated a nail polish that changes color when exposed to date rape drugs. It’s not known yet how the potentially life-saving lacquer will work though we believe it might involve dipping a digit in your drink; it’s a small price to pay to stay safe. [Elle]

Charlotte Tilbury is out to boost everyone’s confidence and it’s not just with the power of her magic makeup! The cosmetic cavalier will kick off a social campaign aimed to help everyone believe in themselves. You can simply share a split snap of yourself from your younger years with a recent selfie. Day in the Life: Bianca Balti, Dolce&Gabbana Model Off Duty

As the face of Dolce&Gabbana’s Light Blue fragrance campaign, Bianca Balti usually spends her time on shoots, getting hair and makeup done, traveling, meeting editors, and conducting interviews. But what a day like for the Italian beauty when she’s off duty? We grabbed a few minutes with the model when she was in town celebrating the launch of two Light Blue limited scents (Escape to Panarea and Discover Vulcano) to find out–including her healthy obsessions and what life is like in her other role, Mom.

7:30 a.m. Wake up and have a cup of coffee with half and half, while sitting in the garden answering emails.
9:00 a.m. Take [my daughter] Matilde to school
10:00 a.m. Hot Yoga
11:30 a.m. Tidying and cleaning up the house. Then, onto chores for the day. I go for a ride on my bicycle to the grocery store.
2:00 p.m. Watch some ”home renovations” TV shows
4:00 p.m. Go pick up my daughter and take her to her play date or to sport practice or to the park or to the beach
7:00 p.m. I meet with my girlfriends to have some quality chit chat
8:00 p.m. Time to cook and eat dinner, and maybe watch an episode of CSI: Las Vegas with my daughter
9:00 p.m. Tuck Matilde into bed. Sit on the couch with my partner, start to watch a movie, but end up going to bed….
10:30 p.m. Make a list in my head of all the things I have to be grateful for that happened during the day so that I can have sweet dreams!

Beauty Buzz: Rihanna’s Lipstick Lust, Makeup Touches from Tomorrow, and Are Celebs Scents on Their Way Out?

She’s had her own namesake lipstick and served as the face of several tubes, so it’s no wonder that the lippie is Rihanna’s number one makeup must-have. The star spilled the not-so-secret to Elle, saying, “It draws attention away from any flaws. When someone is wearing lipstick, you just assume they’re wearing a full face of makeup. And guys are stupid—they won’t notice when you’re not.” [Elle]

Now this is what we call beauty tech! Japanese producer and technical director Nobumichi Asai has released an incredible video that combines his previous work with architectural projection maps and motion tracking technology to create real-time makeup looks that moves with you. The model featured int he clip wears special dots on her face for the motion-tracking to follow. The result is a projection of a full face of makeup — no product required. While the idea sounds (and looks) amazing, we doubt anyone will travel with all the equipment this technology calls for. But it’s possible the idea could be refined in the future. [CNet]

Uh-oh, the Biebs and T-Swift are in trouble! It looks like celebrity scents have gone the way of nail art and reached its peak. Elizabeth Arden recently announced its worse quarter since 1996, noting, “The decline in sales of celebrity fragrances, particularly the Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift fragrances, was steeper than anticipated.” It’s understandable that the shelves have become quite crowded, as it seems every star has a personalized scent (or two, or 16).  [The Telegraph]

Madonna may have just turned 56 over the weekend, but she’s doing everything in her power to not look it. The sun-conscious star was spotted on the beach in Ibiza fully covered in a patterned hat and caftan, shades, and a long-sleeved shirt. It sure beats slathering on a high SPF sunscreen every two hours! [The Cut]

Salma Hayek Pinault is making her way back to print, but it’s not for a cover story. Her eponymous brand Nuance will release its debut campaign in the pages of October glossies. The screen star and beauty buff will front all four ads in Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, and InStyle to highlight the brand’s hero products. “CVS has chosen to take this unprecedented step and run print advertising for Nuance in fall beauty books,” said Hayek Pinault. “I can’t wait for more women to be exposed to [my products].” [WWD]

Jenna Lyons Thinks Natural Beauty Is Simply Chic

Many look to Jenna Lyons for style insight, but we’ve always wondered what lippie she uses for her signature bold lip. Into the Gloss recently sat down with J. Crew’s executive creative director to not only answer out question but to find out a few more of her beauty buys and secrets to share. Here are a few of our favorite highlights and what items we’ll be adding to our shopping list:

It’s Orange-Red – Not every red lipstick is the created the same, and Lyons like to rock a red that has yellow and orange undertones to complement her skin tone. She counts NARS’ Lipstick in Heatwave and Bite Beauty’s Matte Crème Lip Crayon in Clementine as favorites and even wears MAC’s Prowear Lip Pencil in Staunchly Stylish when she wants something subtler.

Less Is More — She’s known for rocking a perfectly polished red lip, but Lyons prefers an effortless approach to beauty. She regularly reaches for Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer with SPF for her face and a few drops of Sachajuan’s Intensive Hair Oil after she steps out of the shower. “There’s sexiness in not trying to be sexy,” she told Into the Gloss. “There has to be something that’s a bit undone. You can’t have perfect hair, and clothes, and makeup—you need an element of imperfection to make you feel like there’s a person behind it all.”

Skincare’s Her Sticking Point – J. Crew’s executive creative director turns to celebrity facialist Aida Bicaj, who introduced her to skin care staples like Biologique Recherche Lotion P50. Other major skin musts are Shu Uemura’s Intense Vitalizing Concentrate, Dr. Jart’s Firming Sleep Mask, Estée Lauder’s Stress Relief Eye Masks, Arcona’s Brighening Gommage, and Blistex Medicated Lip Balm. She said, “It’s the only lip balm that doesn’t burn my lips—I know I’m not the only one with that problem. ”

The Eyes Have It – Don’t let her frames fool you; she doesn’t use them to hide her eyes. “I don’t have one general makeup look, but it’s always either a red lip or a dark eye,” she explained. “Those are my only two choices, and I do them pretty regularly.“ When her lip look isn’t front and center, Lyons loves to play up her eyes with Shu Uemura’s Sweet Beige Brown Palette, Tom Ford Defining Pen, and Chantecaille Longest Lash mascara.

Her Son Has a Big Say – She and her son Beckett are incredibly close, and he has a few strong opinions on her beauty buys. He can easily tell when Lyons switches up her lip shade, but he isn’t a fan of the retailer’s new fragrances. “I’ve been trying to wear it, but my son is completely not tolerant because I’ve been wearing the same perfume since he was born,” Lyons shared. “He’s like, ‘You don’t smell like my mom! Where’s your perfume?’”

She’s Not Afraid of AgingLyons likes to joke about getting older and feeling the effects of aging, choosing to smile it about than worrying about every little line. “Society is so tough and expectations are so unrealistic,” she said. “I guess I would rather talk about it with a smile and say, ‘Oh God, I’m old!’ than spend all my time at the dermatologist. I approach aging with ice cream and a martini.”

Get Red Carpet Radiant Skin in Time for the Emmys

TV’s biggest celebrities are spending this week primping and prepping for Monday’s Emmy Awards. While the dress can wait until the weekend and hair and makeup are done day-of, many are making appointments with their dermatologists early to ensure their skin is perfect before a particle of powder touches it. We touched base with skincare expert Dr. Brian Zelickson to get the scoop on what skincare regimens will help our favorite small screen stars rock the red carpet.

Start Early – Many of our favorite celebs have probably had their derm appointments booked as soon as the nominations went out. But most are likely to stop in two weeks prior to the big event, depending on what they’re looking to achieve. “For Botox [and similar treatments] and fillers I would recommend at least 2 weeks,” Dr. Zelickson explained. “For an unwanted acne cyst or skin rash they could be seen the day before or even the day of. 

Keep Skincare Simple – Regardless of what time of year these VIPs snap up their statues, they follow strict skincare rules with the most potent potions. “I like to keep it simple – use a sunscreen with an anti–oxidant such as MD Complete Youthful Skin Sun Shield SPF 50 in the morning and a retinoid/retinol product in the PM,” Dr. Zelickson advised. “The degree of [moisture for each season] varies – generally more moisturization in the winter and less in the summer. Also, it’s good to use a lighter retinoid or retinol in the winter as compared to the summer.”

Pop In for a Peel — Most stars will procure a peel, such as his MD Complete Anti-Aging Non-Irritating Pro Peel 5-Day Treatmentat least a week in advance to ensure they maintain their youthful glow amongst the many camera flashes. “The five-day peel boasts a combination of skin-brightening AHAs, vitamins and nutrients that stimulate and exfoliate skin to eliminate dead, dulling surface cells,” he said.

Be Prepared – Sometimes a blemish can rear its ugly head at the worse time, and you just can’t leave it to the professionals. If a pimple does pop up – no pun intended – Dr. Zelickson recommends using the MD Complete Breakout Spot Treatment to ensure it disappears ASAP without making things worse. He said, “Unlike traditional Benzoyl Peroxide treatments, it soothes and hydrates skin, while eliminating the bacteria that cause breakouts.”

Narciso Rodriguez is back on the fragrance counter with a sensual aroma to contrast the recent sweep of sweet scents. Called Narciso, the simple yet chic bottle houses a combination of white gardenia, rise, musk, vetiver, and black and white cedar. Exfoliating helps assure healthy skin turnover as we age and allows your inner radiance to shine through, no matter what you’re wearing. “As a rule of thumb, it’s good to exfoliate your entire body every five days,” Schneider said. Shave to Smooth
Shaving does double duty when it comes to ensuring silky skin, as long as you have a good razor that’s sensitive to your needs. It’s not just your face that needs a daily dose of sunscreen, but the rest of you as well! Schneider knows it’s a year-round skin-care staple, especially in the warmer months, when we’re out and about in the sun. It should be layered on top of your moisturizing mixture of choice. “Sunscreen, no doubt!” she said when asked about her number one beauty must.

Skip the Skin Hang-Ups
Previous shaving snafus, falls, and scrapes can leave their mark on your skin, but they shouldn’t hold back your wardrobe. We should embrace everything that makes us unique, flaws and all. But if you’re still worried about how your skin looks in a short skirt, Schneider has a few ideas. “You can also implant fat, or receive microdermabrasion treatments based on the severity of the scar,” she said. “I recommend you ignore them and enjoy your body.”

Katy Perry Has New Nose Bling

One of Katy Perry’s teenage dreams has just come true: a rose ring. The “Birthday” singer shared a video of the process on her Instagram over the weekend where her followers watched as the piercer pushed the needle through before fitting her with the new bit of bling. Just like any rebellious kid, she captioned the clip with a lament to her mom. “Last time I did this I was on my own with a safety pin & cube of ice at 13.” she captioned. “This time I thought it was best I left it to the pros. Sorry, Mom (again).” Though body piercings have a bit of a throwback vibe, it looks like nose jewelry is making triumphant return. Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato, and a few select celebs have one of their own. Plus, Perry’s bestie Rihanna faked a recent septum piercing for her September W cover, which caused a major stir. Even The New York Times has noted that piercings have progressed back into the limelight, just a bit more refined. Don’t worry Katy, your mom will get over the shock…eventually.

It’s a relationship that runs deep: it traces back to my first manicure at age five (thanks, Mom!) to now, as I reside in a room that mimics a nail salon, thanks to the (very full) Lucite shelves my roommate gifted me for my 22nd birthday. So, yes, my obsession might be somewhat of a problem…but it’s only growing.

When Michael Kors’ complete polish collection landed on my desk, I was overwhelmed. Like it was holiday in August, I opened those little boxes faster than it takes for a base coat to dry. Promptly, I was transported to nail polish heaven as I tried to decide on which hue to use on in my next at-home manicure. They’re iridescent, they’re bold, they’re chic, they’re vampy, they’re bright—they’re everything.

I admit, panic ensued when I realized that I simply don’t have enough room for all 18 bottles on my already overflowing nail polish rack. I had to pare down my favorites. As a slave to anything neutral, simple and (sigh) basic, I couldn’t resist the lure of these five bare beauties. Plus, nude nails are totally trending right now. Ingénue, Crowd-Pleaser, Coquette, Posh and Spotlight are the most gorgeous nudes that my comprehensive collection could ask for. As a group, they’re totally layer-able, and individually, they’re elegant barely-there pigments. You better believe I will find each of these bottles some turf on my polish rack—as they say, “out with the old, in with the new.” Or then again, maybe I’ll just get another rack. –Lauren Kaplan

Coif chameleon Rita Ora has switched up her style once again by channeling a blend of Chanel’s Spring 2014 and Fall 2014 looks! The “Black Widow” songstress stepped out on stage at V Festival over the weekend in a pearl encrusted ensemble up to her tresses. Ora credited stylist Chris Appleton with the hair handiwork, who weaved dozens of the mini minerals of in a series of braids throughout her pumped up pony. [Instagram]

While we’re eagerly awaiting any news from the Girls set, it looks like Hannah Horvath has a new look! Lena Dunham debuted a platinum blonde bowl cut via Instagram on Friday, leaving everyone to speculate whether it was a wig or not for the new season.  Congrats are in order for Ted Gibson and his hubby Jason Backe! Though the pair held a symbolic ceremony back in 1996, they officially tied the knot last week in a low-key ceremony at Hudson Rover Park in New York with Gibson girl Lupita Nyong’o in attendance. “It was important, for us to get married,” Mr. Gibson said. “First for love, second for money, third because we can. Estee Lauder is not content to take over the beauty counter – they’re heading to your kitchen, too! The beauty brand partnered with Momofuku to create a cookie inspired by Estée Lauder’s iconic scent, Private Collection. The cookie concoction contains the heart of Bulgarian rose from Lauder’s personal blend (using rose extract), dried strawberries, and vanilla.
