My mother came to visit me in New York City last weekend. Whenever she comes to town, I know that I will get my cultural fill with trips to museums and fancy department stores. This time was no different. After walking through Central Park, we decided to escape the rain at Saks Fifth Avenue. Once inside, we made a beeline for the shoe salon on the ninth floor after seeing the Christian Louboutin nail polish displays in the store windows.

As we walked up to the #BeauteLouboutin counter, a woman—who we later found out was the assistant manager—was restocking the polish. I may have run over, frantic that I wouldn’t be able to fondle the polish in person. She understood my urgency, telling my mother and I that they had sold out and had to call actual Louboutin boutiques to re-up their inventory.

As she unboxed two polishes for us, she explained that the bottle’s cap is modeled after the heel of the Ballerina Ultima, the highest Louboutin heel in existence. The idea of the calligraphy-inspired cap is that women will take a moment to pamper themselves with a brush that inhibits bubbles and deposit a rich dose of the iconic red the designer has become known for.

“Oh,” she said as she handed over our coveted polishes, “the bottle is to be displayed and admired.”

Done and done, Mr. Louboutin. –Channing Hargrove

Beauty Buzz: Join CVS' Makeup Academy, Swiss Army...Barrette?, Mara Hoffman's Camel Hair Inspo

By  August 01, 2014

CVS is putting a whole new meaning to drugstore beauty buy. The ubiquitous pharmacy is launching its first proprietary beauty line named Makeup Academy, or MUA.  The line has 145 items, including lashes, brushes, and lip products. The matte black packaging allows for a sleek, modern design, and the line looks to indicate sophistication and professionalism. Products will be available starting this month. [WWD]

This is one hairclip you won’t want to lose in your purse! The Leatherdos hairclip is a cross between a barrette and a Swiss Army Knife with a flat screwdriver, wrench, a ruler, and more – all while keeping your hair out of your face. Skip the airport and take it camping instead to show your friends how handy beauty can really be. [InStyle]

Sometimes beauty inspiration comes from the weirdest places. Such was the case for this gorgeous hair accessory used by Mara Hoffman for her runway shows. The colorful ropes, pom poms, and gold embellishments woven through models’ braids were actually intended to be camel adornments. Hoffman had collected them during her travels, planning to incorporate the look into fashion. Even cooler–select salons will be giving away these hair accessories in August with the purchase of two Catwalk by Tigi products. This is one hot hair trend you don’t want to miss out on. [Allure]

An around-the-world trip is pretty common. An around-the-world hairstyling trip is not. That’s exactly what Jun Kuwabara is doing, traveling the world while cutting people’s hair in the process. He said, “I wanted to engage in something significant while I traveled,” and decided that he was going to cut hair for 1,000 people. His salon is a mobile one – he is seen cutting hair on sidewalks, parks, beaches, and storefronts in locales around the globe. [Instagram]

Thought you’d never get away from your acne scars? You’re in luck! PicoSure, the world’s first and only picosecond laser to treat tattoo removal, has now been cleared by the FDA to treat acne scars. PicoSure clinical studies showed a dramatic improvement in the appearance of acne scars in as few as three treatments. For those who suffer from severe acne and resulting scars, this is certainly a reason to celebrate. Hooray! [Glam Inbox]

Drew Barrymore’s Flower Brand Blossoms into Fragrance

By  August 01, 2014

Drew Barrymore’s garden of beauty buys is growing with a new branch of fragrances.

In lieu of simply slapping her name on a celebrity perfume, the multi-tasking mom wanted her first scents to tell a story. “A very wise person, who will remain nameless, once said, ‘Think about the longevity and your broad vision. Don’t take easily available right now.’ It scarred me and stuck with me in the best way,” she explained to Women’s Wear Daily. “This collection of [Flower] fragrances is actually about a story and has an emotional association. The story really is about a woman who is multifaceted.”

The result is a day in the life of a Flower girl and since the scents share similarities, they can be layered for a customized blend all your own. The three scents will be available at Walmart, a well as on its site, in October and prices will range from $9.98 for a roller ball to $24.98 for a 30 ml. bottle.

Cherished, which represents the morning, has a focus on the warm fuzzies. “The nuzzling nature of when a woman is with the thing that is most important to her and her family and in her home,” she said. The aroma blends notes of morning dew accord, sparkling cassis, and Italian lemon on top; iris petals, springtime lily of the valley, and cabbage rose – a favorite of Barrymore – at the heart, and a base of Tahitian vanilla, clean cotton musk, and creamy sandalwood.

Radiant represents the girl on the go who aims to feel fresh throughout the day. As such, dewy greens, sparkling Italian bergamot, and watery calone open the eau de parfum. The scent centers around cabbage rose, pink peony, and magnolia while crystalline musks, pink amber, and blond woods round it out.

Sultry closes out the day with a chance for romance with a combination of purple plum, cranberry cocktail, and pink pepper to start with a heart of night blooming jasmine, cashmeran, and juicy blackberries. Patchouli, Madagascar vanilla, and sultry musks anchor the scent for a night out on the town. “By this time, it’s nighttime and there is hopefully romance in our life,” Barrymore shared. “It is aspirational, it is the escape and it is the need to keep everything alive.”

This is just the beginning for Barrymore as she looks for fresh ways to expand her beauty reach. She said. “Hopefully, this can come out, stand the test of time, grow, evolve, change and not just be a one-off.” We can’t wait to see what else the star has up her sleeve!

MAC Takes a Page From Our Favorite Romance Novels

By  August 01, 2014

We’ve grown up seeing a shirtless Fabio on the vibrant ‘80s covers of romance novels, but now MAC Cosmetics is bringing the tomes’ fantasy to reality with its latest collection, Novel Romance.

The beauty brand skimmed the bookshelf to develop the color palette, including the Electric Cool Eyeshadows and Fluidlines, which range from the sparkling champagne at the start of a sunset to the deep blues and purples of the night sky. The three shadow quads become a choose-your-own amorous adventure of sultry shades. A provocative pout is perfected with a seductive selection of lipsticks and lipglasses, not to mention the blushes that will keep you flushed after a first kiss. Nocturnal nail lacquers will have many hopeless romantics primping in preparation for a romantic rendezvous with shades of crimson, violet, and royal blue.

Like any Harlequin novel, don’t be surprised if you develop a burning desire for an after-midnight meeting with someone special. Just be sure to take your lipstick along for the ride!

Fiona Stiles Wants You to Shop Her Makeup Kit

By  August 01, 2014

fiona-stiles-reed-clarkeCelebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles is stepping away from her kit to set up a shop online for her favorite beauty buys.

The makeup maestro (who’s worked with the likes of Zoe Saldana, Amy Adams, Halle Berry, and more) announced the launch of her online shop Reed Clarke on Monday with an Instagram snap of the site’s logo. “I am so happy to announce the official launch of my beauty retail site…” she captioned the shot. “Come on by the “shop” and check it out…. I hope you find something you love!”

What makes the site unique is the fact that the makeup, skin, and hair essentials are curated directly from Stiles’ kit and medicine cabinet. Stiles has snapped up fresh finds from indie brands and imports like Goldfaden MD, Kahina, Laqa & Co, Koh Gen Do, and Jouer to name a few. Each product is displayed with a description from the beauty buff herself, making it a more personal shopping experience.

We’re already working on a wish list of Stiles’ selections as we speak!

Beauty Buzz: Memebox Delivers Korean Beauty, The "Godfather" of Makeup Passes Away, Showcase Talent With NYX Face Awards

By  July 31, 2014

It’s no secret that Korean beauty has been coveted and loved by beauty junkies this summer. And now, the number one Korean beauty e-commerce retailer, Memebox, has officially come to the States. Memebox is a curated box series and provide only the most trusted and popular Korean beauty products, while also allowing the customers to choose which products they desire. The “Godfather” of makeup, Dick Smith, has passed away at the age of 92. Smith was an Oscar-winning makeup artist who transformed actors into completely different identities for iconic films such as The Godfather, The Exorcist, and Amadeus. He has influenced and mentored many talented makeup artists, and his death is a great loss to the movie makeup world. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Beauty vlogging just got a whole lot more intense. NYX Cosmetics has announced FACE Awards, a nationwide competition to showcase makeup talent in the YouTube community. With makeup gurus like Michelle Phan and Bethany Mota who have been loved by millions, YouTube is clearly a powerful platform that has recognized beauty talent. The NYX Face Awards gives contestants a chance to win $25,000, consultations with pro makeup artists, a year’s supply of NYX Cosmetics, and the promise of a professional career in makeup artistry. Log on here to vote and show support for your favorite contestant’s videos! [NYX Face Awards]

Can Katy Perry, Linda Evangelista, and Gucci Westman convince you to wear a weird hockey mask on your face in the name of skincare? The answer should be duh. The recent addition to the tech meets beauty game is a mask complete with tiny bulbs that emit different forms of professional-strength LED lights to elicit target response within skin. It supposedly stimulates collagen, breaks up hyper-pigmentation, kills acne-causing bacteria and reduces inflammation. Talk about the whole package! [Vogue]

Rejoice, Sephora fans! Sephora has opened in another location – 60th and Lexington in New York City – and they have some exciting things lined up. You can get a Mini Makeover at the Sephora Beauty Studio, test the Color IQ service to match the perfect foundation to your skin, and even take a class that teaches you all the beauty basics. Not to mention, while celebrating the opening, all Sephora Beauty Insiders can receive and exclusive Sephora Lex at 60th tote bag with their purchase! [Glam Inbox]

Day in the Life: Tyler Laswell, TRESemmé Lead Stylist

By  July 30, 2014

Step into the (jam-packed but fun) day of TRESemmé lead stylist, Tyler Laswell, as he works backstage at 2015 Mercedes-Benz Swim Week Miami.

8:00 a.m. I am abruptly awoken by my alarm and I know it’s time to start my day. After a quick shower, I put on my game-face and head to my first meeting over breakfast with the TRESemmé social media manager, Nami.
9:00 a.m. Nami and I decide on refreshing smoothies to kick-start our day! We chitchat a bit, and then discuss our plans for the day’s social media coverage.10am
10:00 a.m. I run over to The Sagamore for my styling appointment with style blogger, Jessica Ricks’ from hapatime.com. Jessica has beautiful, long hair, so we decide to take inspiration from Miami and give her loose, beachy waves.
11:30 a.m. The calm before the storm… I join the TRESemmé styling team poolside at The Gale for a little bit of relaxation before I get ready for our first show, Dolores Cortés.
2:00 p.m. Shower and wardrobe change number two! This is when the nerves start to kick in; I begin mentally reviewing my pre-show checklist to reconfirm that everything is prepped and ready to go.
3:00 p.m. I arrive backstage at our first TRESemmé sponsored show, Dolores Cortés. After I set up my kit, we gather the styling team to discuss how to create the three-section elevated ponytail with wire accents. This season, the Dolores Cortés collection was influenced by an urban Safari and the hair look definitely brings this exotic theme to life. This pony is very complicated, and with only 8 stylists to complete 16 models, we have our work cut out for us!
4:30 p.m. We are halfway through our prep time backstage and things are CRAZY!TRESemme at Dolores Cortes Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim 2015 - Backstage
5:45 p.m. The models are dressed and ready to walk the runway! The TRESemmé team uses this time to check the hair for consistency and last minute touch-ups.TRESemme at Dolores Cortes Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim 2015 - Runway
6:00 p.m. It’s showtime! The music starts, the lights dim and the first girl takes the runway. The teams backstage are quiet, waiting to hear the audience’s cheers of approval. There is nothing better then the feeling you get when you hear the crowd go wild; it’s when you know that the entire look has successfully come together and the hard work has paid off.
6:15 p.m. The 15-minute show feels like it only lasted two seconds; the girls re-enter the backstage area, tearing off their clothes and congratulating their fellow models and design teams. Another successful show under our belts!
6:15 p.m. This is usually our time to celebrate, but not this season, we have to begin preparing for Beach Bunny Featuring The Blonds Show! We change out our TRESemmé products, clean our brushes, organize our pin boxes and lay out the extensions in preparation for the next show.
7:00 p.m. It’s hurricane season in Miami and as the girls begin to arrive a storm hits. I mean a crazy storm; the rain is so intense that it floods the backstage area and short-circuits all of the power to our styling area. This is so not good!TRESemme at Beach Bunny Featuring The Blonds Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim 2015 - Backstage
7:30 p.m. The power is finally restored and the TRESemmé team is ready to get down to business! The Beach Bunny look was influenced by the iconic 1960’s film Barberella and is very intricate. The hair must be curled and set in pin curls, teased and then styled.TRESemme at Beach Bunny Featuring The Blonds Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim 2015 - Backstage
9:45 p.m. With the show scheduled for 10p.m., this is crunch time! We kick it into overtime and begin curling at record speed.
10:45 p.m. The girls are finally ready to take the catwalk with big, sexy hair courtesy of Team TRES! As soon as the first girl steps out the crowds erupts into cheers and applause- we did it!!
11:00 p.m. Time to pack up; the show is over and the team is getting their second wind thanks to all the adrenaline-pumping action. After celebratory hugs and high-fives, it’s time to party!1115pm
11:15 p.m. Late dinner and drinks with the team at Villa Azur. The fish tacos are amazing!
12:00 a.m. After dinner, we head to the Beach Bunny Featuring The Blonds After Party. Attending after parties is one of my favorite parts of Fashion Week; I love seeing everyone celebrating their hard work!
2:00 a.m.-4:30 a.m. The Beach Bunny event is winding down but everyone is still in the mood to party, so its off to Miami hot spot Rec Room for after hours.
4:30 a.m. Bedtime! Up for 20 hours and sleeping for four, then it’s time to get up and do it all over again. While its not always glamorous, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I know how lucky I am to be a part of this crazy business called fashion.

Scarlett Johansson Preps for her Baby with a Bold Bowl Cut

By  July 30, 2014

Scarlett Johansson is counting down the last few weeks of her pregnancy with a brand new ‘do!

The mom-to-be was spotted Tuesday in New York City with her fiancé Romain Dauriac rocking a bright blond shaggy bowl cut with dark roots that can be seen from the back. It makes sense that the star opted for the chop, as handling the sweltering city with a baby bump (she’s due in August) is no easy feat. Not to mention, little ones like to play (read: pull) with hair.

While last year’s pixie and this year’s lob were the cuts to covet, she’s found a balance between the two to beat the heat. What do you think of Johansson’s fresh cut?

Sprtizing and Styling with Bethany Mota

By  July 30, 2014

Bethany Mota is going viral in more ways than one. The YouTube sensation has entered the closets and bedrooms of over 6 million subscribers through her partnership with Aeropostale. And now she’s staking a claim on their vanities as well with her first fragrance, which launched this week at the teen retailer. Glam got the chance to sit down with the socially and sartorially savvy star to get the scoop on her new scent and her beauty must-haves, plus, snag style tips to shift your wardrobe from summer to fall!

On her reaction to creating her first scent:

I have always really wanted to create a fragrance so I was just like, “Is this for real? Are we actually going to do this?” I kind of didn’t believe it at first and then we had the first meeting where we went over basically a blueprint of what I would want the fragrance to be. Would I want it to be floral or would I want it to be super girly or a little bit more edgy? And then I was like, “Wait, this is actually happening.” So my reaction I was just so amazed, freaked out and excited all at once.

On her top beauty staples:

BB cream for sure because it’s so light and it has sun protection, and it’s just great. Definitely mascara; I like to use the Cover Girl Bombshell [Volume by Lashblast]. It’s double sided, and I feel like it just does so much for my lashes. Then an eyebrow pencil, I feel like eyebrows can just change so much with your makeup. You can be wearing very little makeup and just fill in your brows, and, boom, it makes such a difference so I always have my little brow pencil in there.

On who the Bethany Mota girl is:

Everything that I design I do with the mindset of ‘What would my viewers like?’ because obviously they’re the ones that are going to be buying the product. But it’s also finding the balance where I really love what I’m creating and they love it as well. I always get inspired by them using Twitter and Instagram; they’ll send me pictures like, “What do you think of this outfit?” I always ask them for help of what they would like to see in the line. So for me, it’s all about incorporating their ideas with my ideas to make it something that we all love.

bethany-mota-vanessa-hudgensOn her style and beauty icons:

Vanessa Hudgens. She’s very bohemian and I’ve actually been inspired by her style for a few years now. Lauren Conrad has also always been a big fashion inspiration for me because her style is just very classic and very classy. And then also Demi Lovato because my style isn’t super edgy, but every once in a while, I like to be a little edgy and I always get inspired by her to do that. She inspired this leather jacket [from my Fall collection].

On her favorite designer:

I’ve always been a big fan of Marc Jacobs.

On the best way to transition your wardrobe to fall:

Knee socks and tights; it’s a perfect way to take your summer dress or your summer skirt and still wear it in the fall time. When it’s really cold, I’ll wear black tights and I’ll take printed knee socks and put it over and then [add] some really cool combat boots and, boom. You can just pair that with a super summery floral skirt and it looks like it’s made for the fall.

The Lippies We Love for National Lipstick Day

By  July 29, 2014

Ever since we were little, we’ve been fascinated with lipstick. And as we grew up, our love hasn’t waned–all of us Glam girls carry at least one (if not three) lippies in our bags regularly. In honor of National Lipstick Day, the editorial team shares their lipstick lust with their favorite shades:

1. YSL Rouge Pur Couture #13 Le Orange, available at Barneys.com for $35
Back in the day–2010, so don’t judge–I used to be obsessed with the Kardashians, Kourtney, specifically. I couldn’t get enough of the littlest Kardashian’s style! I had coveted her red lips and tips from afar and the moment she let it slip what color she favors, I knew I had to have it. She introduced me to the world of luxury lipsticks with this baby. I still wear it, years later.  – Channing Hargrove, Fashion Reporter

2. NARS Limited Edition Cinematic Lipstick in Short Circuit (similar shade: Jungle Red), available at NARSCosmetics.com for $26
I’ve been on a seamlessly never-ending search for the perfect orangey/red shade but thanks to NARS Short Circuit lipstick, I think my quest is finally over. NARS has mastered long lasting formula, so I can stop obsessing over it wearing off and spend more time left making pretty orangey/red kissy faces.  – Michelle Kushner, Designer

3. Revlon ColorBurst Lacquer Balm, available at CVS.com for $9.49
I love that this brings a pop of color to any look and is perfect for the summer. – Jenny Lee, Editorial Intern

4. Stila Color Balm Lipstick in Brigitte, available at Sephora.com for $22
How I ended up with this Stila lipstick is a mystery (I guess you could say it found me sometime during Fashion Week madness), but I’m thankful that I did. It’s a balm, so it leaves a satin-y finish but it almost acts like a stain. The creamy lip color is super pigmented, so it gives my lips a really deep color without drying them out. Best of all, the color is buildable, so I can achieve any color from just-bitten to full-on vamp with just a few swipes. – Lauren Kaplan, Associate Editor

5. Illamasqua Matte Lip Liquid in Forbidden (similar shade: NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Carthage, available at Sephora.com for $26)
I’ve never been a big lipstick person, preferring to stick to glosses for their ease of application, but this matte pink won me over, hardcore. It’s an apply-and-forget sort of lipstick, perfect for girls like me who hate touchups throughout the night. – Bianca Posterli, Editorial Director

6. MAC Limited Edition Ruffian Red (Similar Shade:  MAC Russian Red, available at MACCosmetics.com for $20)
This is the best red, but since it’s limited edition, I save it for special occasions. I first got my hands on a tube backstage in 2009, and then the brand reissued it to the public in 2012 (when I bought 4 tubes). It is a beautiful intense blue red that’s a little bit retro for the 100% modern woman.  – Carolyn Hsu, Managing Editor

7. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Jilted, available at UrbanDecay.com for $22
Pink used to be a very bad word when I was in high school and I avoided it like the plague. But, I slowly but surely embraced the hue in it punchiest forms since beauty became my beat. The lipstick packs a lot of pigment without drying out my pout and provides a fresh alternative to the classic red lip for a pulled-together, yet effortless, look. – Valis Vicenty, Associate Beauty Editor

8. Dolce & Gabbana Cream Lipstick in Delight and Sephora Rouge Cream Lisptick in Miss Or Madam, available at Sephora.com for $12.50
The perfect pink can be hard to find. That’s why I blend two of my favorite lippies—Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick in Delight and Sephora Rouge Cream Lipstick in Miss or Madam—to settle on this pretty hue. – Angel Lenise Robinson, Entertainment Editor

9. NYX Cosmetics Macaroon Lippies in Violet, available at NYXComsetics.com for $6
I picked the NYX Cosmetics Macaron Lippies Violet because it’s a fun, bold and a different color. It really popped against my skin tone and added some flavor to my neutral/natural eye and face makeup. — Sam Bortniker, Editorial Intern
