Don’t Be Shiny – Stay Matte and Beat the Heat With This Makeup Artist Trick

By  April 16, 2014

prevent-oily-skinDon’t let the random days of chilly temperatures and random snowflakes fool you – spring is definitely here and summer is on its way. Soon you’ll be packing away all of your sweaters and getting reacquainted with your sleeveless styles. Soon, instead of worrying about your skin being too dry, you’ll be worried about sweating all of your makeup off the second you go outside. No worries. It happens to the best of us. Sweltering hot weather can be an issue for makeup lovers. I often find myself sweating profusely and having a fear of my makeup dripping off my face, or transferring onto my light colored clothing in the sun. I’ve been known to tell folks that I feel like a chocolate ice cream cone melting in the sun. Celebrity makeup artist Cynde Watson calls it “sweating cocoa.” No matter what we call it, it isn’t cute.

You may think that translucent powder is a shiny woman’s best friend on a hot day, but that isn’t necessarily the case. Powder can sit on your skin’s surface and look cakey, as well as transfer easily onto your clothing (and even more embarrassingly, that of others). During a recent Skype interview where she educated me on the mattifying power of professional favorite makeup line Becca Cosmetics, Watson taught me a secret she first learned from Sam Fine. Here is how professional makeup artists recommend you use powder, to effectively set your look:

Step 1 – pull a piece of tissue apart so it’s super thin, one ply.

Step 2 – use that tissue to gently blot the skin. Press to absorb the oil in the T-Zone.

Step 3 – THEN you can apply powder, because you’re applying it to matte skin (instead of over a layer of oil).

Watson confessed that as an artist, powder isn’t one of the first tools in her arsenal against the greasies. You can insure that your look stays matte by laying down the right foundation. It all begins with a killer primer. Watson sold me on Becca Cosmetics Ever Matte Poreless Priming Perfector, which can be used over or under foundations, on eyelids as primer, or on lips as mattifier. I love a good beauty all-rounder. I’m happy to report that I used Becca’s Priming Perfector on a recent 80 degree day and it stood up to the test! No melted chocolate ice cream, no sweating cocoa, no makeup transference. Yes, I got sweaty in the sun but my makeup didn’t budge. This is a movement I can get behind! I plan to stay matte and beat the heat by using primer, blotting my situation when needed, and above all else staying hydrated in the spring-into-summer heat so I don’t melt away.

What are your best tricks and tips for staying matte?

Zoe Kravitz Becomes A Blonde Babe

By  April 16, 2014

It seems everyone went a bit blonder for Coachella, as Zoe Kravitz is the latest to snag a lighter ‘do.

The multihyphanate debuted her new cut, color, and bangs over the weekend during Coachella, even taking to the stage during the festivities. Kravitz really put the look on display during Jimmy Choo’s CHOO.08 event with a textured twist, posing with Solange in nearly matching red-hot ensembles.

She joins fellow boho babes Vanessa Hudgens and Kylie Jenner, who also opted for lighter locks over the same weekend. Looks like Jared Leto’s amazing ombre is breeding a bevy of ballayaged babes!

While the blonde is certainly a bold and beautiful move, we can’t help but wonder if there might be a candy color in her future as well. What do you think of Kravitz’s fresh look?

Living Proof Steps Into Skincare with Spanx for Your Eyes

By  April 15, 2014

living-proof-neotensilLiving Proof has tamed tress troubles for years, but now the brand is stepping into another beauty realm to open our eyes to skincare possibilities.

The labs developed Neotensil, a skincare system that not only reshapes the appearance of eye bags but keeps the area hydrated for up to 24 hours, like Spanx but for your skin. It marks the first topical solution for the problem eye area without the worry of surgery.

The Living Proof labs worked Dr. Bob Langer, Dr. Betty Yu, Dr. Rox Anderson, and Dr. Barbara Gilchrest to create Strateris, the key ingredient in the system. The technology is a breatheable film that mimics skin’s eleasticity and shrinks down to compress and smooth the excess skin and fat pods that can protrude as we age. Not only that, but the formula provides up to 24 hours of hydration to the sensitive area.

While you’ll have to see a dermatologist to pick up the package; it’s also where they can show you how to use the 3-step system that comes with Skin Prep Towelettes, Reshaping Base, Activating Layer, Remover and Remover Pads, and the reshaping Tool to help smooth evertyhing evenly. Plus you can snap up an Under Eye Coverage powder that acts like a concealer to blend seamleslly with the rest of your makeup.

Louise Bourgoin Bolsters Kenzo's Perfume Portfolio

By  April 15, 2014

Louise Bourgoin will be introduced to American audiences and fragrance fanatics as the new face of Kenzo.

The French actress will be featured in a campaign for the brand’s as yet unnamed scent, according to Women’s Wear Daily. Kenzo’s creative director Patrick Guedj will step behind the camera for the ads that will likely appear in September issues. Bourgoin joins fellow up-and-coming screen siren Olga Kurylenko, who served as the face of the brand’s Amour perfume.

We may not know Bourgoin on this side of the pond, as she’s appeared in numerous French films including The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec and A Happy Event; but we’ll be seeing a lot more of her this year with Mark Wahlberg in the upcoming thriller Mojave when it hits theaters nationwide.

With her effortless beauty, we’re sure Bourgoin will shine!

Mani Monday: An Adorable Easter Manicure You Have to Try

By  April 14, 2014

Spring has finally sprung up on us! With the Easter Bunny on his way, we know no normal manicure will do. Tapping into the pastel shades of the season and the floating nail art trend that took off during Fashion Week in February, MARS the Salon found the perfect medium between eye catching and easy to pull off. Here’s how to snag the look for yourself before Sunday’s bug egg hunt with the help of a few hues and nail art brushes:

First apply a base coat before painting an egg shape on the thumb in white polish, mint on the index finger, ice blue on the middle finger, yellow on the ring finger, and pink on the pinky. Then paint a flower with greem, blue, and beige polish on the thumb; paint two zig zag lines with blue polish on the index fingerl paint dots on the middle finger with hot pink polish. Next, paint a chick on the ring finger with black and orange, add a few purple stars on the pinky and finish with a top coat.

2014 MTV Movie Awards: Snag Mila Kunis’s Sultry Beach Waves

By  April 14, 2014

Mila Kunis had tongues wagging at the MTV Movie Awards after skipping the red carpet to hide her burgeoning baby bump and snagging the Best Villain Award as the only woman nominated in the category. She paired her loose fitting, flouncy black dress with soft, effortless waves with megawatt shine that came courtesy of celebrity stylist Renato Campora. He even shared how we can get the look at home; check out the step-by-step below:

Campora began by applying Herbal EssencesMororccan Me a Miracle 7-in-1 Serum on Kunis’s damp tresses to smooth, moisturize, add shine, and, most importantly,  protect. He then added an egg-sized amount of the brand’s Naked Volumizing  Soufflé at her roots to give them a boost to last all night before parting the hair in the middle and blow drying the hair straight with a round brush. Once dry, Campora wrapped two-inch sections around a 1 ½ inch curling iron, waiting for them to cool before gently brushing them out into elegant waves. He sealed in the style with a spry of the Naked Flexible Hold Spritzer.
