Beauty Buzz: Malin Ackerman’s Miley-Inspired Cut, Mackage Makes Mani Magic with Butter London, and Charlize Theron Busts Through Beauty Standards

By  August 26, 2014

Malin Ackerman is certainly a buzz today! The Trophy Wife actress debuted a closely cropped coif at HBO’s Emmys afterparty Monday night. With the shorn sides and slicked back ease, she instantly channels another prominent pixie: Miley Cyrus! [Huffington Post]

Butter London has found a new way to show off its shades. The nail authority is the latest to join Mackage’s Soho Store Series, which showcases of some the noteworthy brands that co-creative directors Elisa Dahan and Eran Elfassy adore. Expect to see neutral shades with a splash of shimmer to mimic their bounty of bags! [Glam Inbox]

Charlize Theron has a thing or two to say about womanhood. The Dior brand ambassador didn’t hold back in a recent interview with Women’s Wear Daily saying, “”It’s ironic that we’ve built the beauty world around 20-year-olds, when they have no f–kin’ concept about wisdom, what life is about, having a few relationships below [their] belt and feeling hardships, to grow into [their] skin and feel confident within [themselves] and to feel the value of who [they] are, not because of a man or because of something like that. And I think that’s such a beautiful thing.” [WWD]

It’s time to give the much-neglected underside of your nails some attention. Known as flip manicure, manicurists are taking vibrant prints and studs and painting them under the nail instead of on top of the nail bed. Even though traditional nail art has fallen out of favor, this new perspective provides plenty of pretty possibilities for fall and beyond. [Refinery 29]

A Day in the Life of Amy Strozzi, Celebrity Makeup Artist

By  August 26, 2014

Amy Strozzi isn’t your average makeup artist  – for her, it’s all about balance. When she’s not on the set of So You Think You Can Dance with Cat Deeley, she’s usually seen touching up Cindy Crawford, Taryn Manning, or Sophie Turner for their next appearances. Not to mention her blog, The Beauty Manifesto, is updated regularly with her current makeup musts and inspiring beauty icons. But for TV’s biggest night, The Emmys, Glam caught up with Strozzi as she races to only feed her cat but do up Deeley and prep another star for her turn on the red carpet.

6:49 AM Charles, my adorable weird eared rescue cat (@Charles_le_cat on Instagram) decides he’s hungry and wakes me up before my alarm is set to go off. Thanks Charles. Feed Charles, go back to sleep.
7:35 AM Officially time to wake up, I do the same thing every morning upon waking…lay in bed for 10 minutes, check my email, check the weather, check my Instagram, read anything important on Twitter.
8:06 AM I grab a cup of coffee and hang with Charles while I put my brushes away that had been drying overnight. JM (my boyfriend) wakes up now and the house is suddenly rowdy and in full swing.
9:22 AM I’m trying to figure out what to wear; it’s hot today, I need to be comfortable yet appropriate but also look good in pictures since I know there will be some taken. I keep it simple, dark jeans and a white button down, JM is blaring “I’m Too Sexy for My Shirt” in the other room while I’m going through this process.
10:30 AM Throw on some Clinique sunscreen (SPF 50 always) and head to Beverly Hills to my client’s house. I always give myself extra time because being late makes me nervous.
10:45 AM On the drive I call my superwoman agent Kelly Tomlinson and review everything needed for the day, the jobs done over the weekend and my schedule coming up in the next week. Kelly is a badass and keeps me busy and organized.
11:45 AM I arrive at my clients where we gather in the kitchen to discuss “the look.” Cat Deeley wants an eye that compliments the dusty pinks of her dress but still feels strong. I show her the palettes from Clinique that I was hoping to use; she loves them.
12:00 PM We get started with the glam process. I have been working with Cat for 7 years now (what?!) and it is still always a pleasure. Her house has the best vibe, so chill and welcoming. We get her ready in her “yoga room,” it has such great natural light.
12:30 PM The champagne is poured. Friends, guests, fellow nominees from SYTYCD all filter in and out.
1:45 PM Uh oh, we’re still not done and she’s supposed to leave at 2! Luckily, her manager has assured us we are good until 2:15. Phew.
2:00 PM Cat gets in her dress, we ooohh and aaaahhh at how beautiful she looks then all descend upon her at once for final touch ups.
2:15 PM My client is in her car and on her way while I am in my car sending BTS pics to my agent to get to the proper press channels before Cat even arrives at the event. It amazes me how fast this all works!
3:00 PM Home to do my product breakdown for the day to send off to Kelly asap. Post all pertinent social media. Review final breakdowns, approve, and submit.
4:30 PM Wash brushes to prepare for client number two.
6:30-8:30 PM Work with new client, which is always slightly nerve racking the first time. She is lovely, the Emmys are on in the background, all goes well.

The Elegant Updos of the 2014 Emmys

By  August 26, 2014

While most tune into to the red carpet coverage of the 2014 Emmy Awards to see what their favorite small screen stars are wearing, it also showcased a slew of beauty looks to rock as we transition into fall. While beach waves will always reign supreme in Hollywood, a set of stars opted for sweeping updos to beat the end-of-summer heat. Glam took a closer look to share some of the details on how to snag the chic hairstyles.

Beauty Buzz: The Best of VMA Beauty, Nicki Minaj’s Many Hairstyles, L’Oreal Paris’ Makeup Genius Emmy Additions

By  August 25, 2014

BeautyBuzzAug251Even with all the throwback and bootylicious outfits that happened on the VMA red carpet and stage on Sunday evening, there were some true beauty wins. Slicked-back hair was abundant, red lips were everywhere and glowing skin was ubiquitous. Gwen Stefani went vintage, Nina Dobrev went bold and Miley Cyrus went, well, kind of natural. Which was your favorite beauty look of the night? [ELLE]

Another trend that was happening all over the VMA red carpet? Fake hair! We spotted extensions, weaves and full-on wigs everywhere. And, really, who did Nicki Minaj think she was fooling? She may have had a line-up of hairdos, but, let’s be honest, no one was actually looking at her hair… [The Cut]

As you gather your goods (read: popcorn, wine and smartphone) and prepare for the Emmys, make sure you download L’Oreal Paris’ Makeup Genius app. In celebration of the awards show, women can virtually try on the makeup looks of three TV characters right at home. L’Oreal Paris Consulting Celebrity Makeup Artist Billy B. created three looks: “The Claire,” “The Joan,” and “The Elisabeth.” Simply tap the app to see the makeup looks on your own face. Happy experimenting! [Glam Inbox]

How does one get a glow as glorious as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s? This is not a rhetorical question—because we have an answer. Get this beauty’s bronze glow with just a handful of products that’ll help you hold on to that summer tan for as long as you can. [Vogue]

NailKale is here! We caught wind of the upcoming superfood-for-nails line back in May, and it is finally available for purchase. We’re happy to see this health fad get recycled into a beauty fad, but the question remains: does it really work? One beauty editor tried it out (and kept Alexa Chung out of it) and had some pretty positive things to say about the green new line. [Into The Gloss]

Maybelline New York Has Got It Made for Fashion Week

By  August 25, 2014

Maybelline is expanding beyond Lincoln Center!

The beauty brand is following in the footsteps of many designers by heading downtown this season and partnering with Made @ Milk Studios. Although Maybelline will still maintain a presence at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week tents, the brand is also supporting emerging designers through the Made program by providing creative direction and backstage prep with a plethora of products for the designers to play with.

There will also be a video incubator, titled Made for Maybelline Film Project, where eight filmmakers will use mixed-media techniques to create 30-second clips inspired by the trends that pop up on the runway. Milk Studios and Made cofounder Mazdack Rassi and Maybelline president David Greenberg will be amongst the panel of judges for the video and award the winner with a financial boost and the opportunity to work with Made on a film project in February 2015.

We can’t wait to get backstage and see the results of their hard work!

Beauty Buzz: Tone It Up With StriVectin, Nail Polish Sales Aren’t Doing Too Hot, Prabal Gurung Does Beauty

By  August 22, 2014

BeautyBuzzAug22Forget about your butt and thighs for a while, and turn your attention to toning your face. StriVectin is debuting a skincare device that the company hopes will help preserve facial muscle mass. Along with Bio-Medial Research, StriVectin created the technology, which targets deeper tissues than most at-home beauty devices. The Facial Toner delivers treatments through soft medical-grade gel pads on either side of the face and is said to rejuvenate and restructure the face. [Women’s Wear Daily]

What’s gives, beauty gals? NPD Group released a study that sales of nail products, which have already been declining for several seasons, fell 11 percent in the second quarter of this year. We’re the first ones to admit our undying love of nail polish, but it seems that most of the country has found better ways to spend their time than at the nail salon or at home mastering complex nail art techniques. [Fashionista]

There’s a new name in beauty, and it’s one you’ve definitely heard before. Designer Prabal Gurung teamed up with MAC Cosmetics to launch a 14-piece collection of makeup that hits stores in November. Not only are we obsessed with the rich hues and variety of products in the collection, but we’re simply smitten with the luxe gold packaging. [Glam Blush]

Behold: the be-all-end-all of hair tutorials. Gisele Bündchen gives precise instructions on how to get her perfect beachy waves. The Brazilian supermodel admits to favoring a natural look to a stick-straight style—and if this how-to is really as easy as it sounds, so do we. So, does this mean we can request a how-to-always-look-that-sexy tutorial from the supermodel, too? [Glamour]

Everyone has a beauty icon, even beauty icons themselves. Rita Ora looks to Freddie Mercury, Debbie Harry, Barbara Streisand, Jimi Hendrix, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Gwen Stefani for beauty inspo. Why? She says, “you remember them; you remember what they wore, they made moments. That’s what I love, that’s beauty inspiration.” Oh, she also has a hidden talent for eyebrow tweezing, which is really important. [Into The Gloss]

Prabal Gurung Does Beauty

By  August 22, 2014

PrabalGurungBeautyFor such a young designer, Prabal Gurung has made quite an impact on the fashion world—and now he’s taking on beauty. The 35-year-old designer teamed up with MAC Cosmetics (which has supported his shows since the beginnings of his line) to launch a 14-stockkeeping-unit collection that will launch on November 26 in MAC stores. If you’re a lucky recipient of a Prabal Gurung show invite this season, you’ll get a sampling of the goods on September 6. Prices range for $30 for lipgloss to $70 for very luxe bronzer.

Notable is the packaging, which is somewhat of a talking point in itself. It stems from Gurung’s own childhood experiences: “I didn’t know the beauty brands or the big designers when I was really young, but I was fascinated by the packaging and the beautiful boxes. It was almost magical.” The luxe gold pieces include a bronzing power, a cream color base, a square-handled buffer brush, a black eye pencil, three eyeshadow duos, three lipsticks and three Lipglasses. As expected, the colors are as rich as the products look from the outside—a true win for Gurung, who said, “I wanted to create something really beautiful that has that little bit of edge.”

We have to say, while we can’t contain our excitement, this makeup collaboration was more or less inevitable. If there’s one man we would trust to help us beautify, it’s this guy, because he really just gets it. Case in point: “The one universal truth I really believe in,” he said, “is that every woman—no matter her shape, size or race—wants to look beautiful. I wanted to create that.”

Beauty Buzz: Mindy Kaling’s Contouring Routine, Evangeline Lilly Scores An ‘Ant-Man’ Mane, and Cara Delevingne Dares to Bare for Tom Ford

By  August 21, 2014

Mindy Kaling is the latest to share some of her beauty secrets à la Kim Kardashian. The comedienne shared a snap of herself behind the scenes of her eponymous show rocking a full hot roller set and lighter foundation applied at high points of her face prior to blending it out into contoured perfection. Her explanation was spot on: “Before you look pretty first you have to look f—–g weird.” [Glamour]

Evangeline Lilly has shortened her strands to join Paul Rudd on the set of Ant-Man. The actress shared a snap with her co-star and a side view of her new look after snipping her tresses into the signature chin-length bob of her character Hope Van Dyne. Only time will tell what her final look in the film will be, but it’s a short start! [People]

Cara Delevingne clearly isn’t camera shy when it comes to showing a little skin, but her newest campaign with Tom Ford takes it to the next level. Aligning with Ford’s penchant for provocative imagery, Delevingne is featured in the ads for the designer’s new Black Orchid Perfume lounging in a floral dotted pool sans a stitch of clothing. If the campaign is any indication, the scent is sure to make a splash! [Fashion Gone Rogue]

There’s a new nail essential you’ll want to snap up on your next blind date or a girls’ night out. Developers at N.C. State University have formulated a nail polish that changes color when exposed to date rape drugs. It’s not known yet how the potentially life-saving lacquer will work though we believe it might involve dipping a digit in your drink; it’s a small price to pay to stay safe. [Elle]

Charlotte Tilbury is out to boost everyone’s confidence and it’s not just with the power of her magic makeup! The cosmetic cavalier will kick off a social campaign aimed to help everyone believe in themselves. You can simply share a split snap of yourself from your younger years with a recent selfie. In the caption, you can share your words of advice that you would tell your younger self with the caption #MakeUpYourDestiny. Talk about the power of positivity; let’s spread it like wildfire!
