Beauty Buzz: Kylie Jenner’s Feeling Blue, Lo Bosworth’s Nose Bling, and Give Your Follicles a Filtered Finish

By  March 25, 2015

Kylie Jenner’s clearly not afraid of a bold beauty look, but there’s one look she won’t go for. Though the teen loves to shake up her hair shade regularly, you won’t see her sporting pink or purple strands anytime soon.  As she explained, “I’d probably never go pink or purple [when it comes to my hair] because blue is my thing. Other than that, I’m extremely open to changing my style and trying different things.” [Style.com]

Thanks to lovelies like Rihanna and FKA Twigs, septum rings have become the piercing du jour for 2015. The latest lady to jump on the bandwagon: Lo Bosworth. The Hills alum and YouTube guru shared a snap of her new nose ring. One thing that she and fellow bling buddies like Katy Perry all share: an apology to mom. [Glamour]

Many stars are playing with pastel strands this spring, most of us are looking for something much subtler for our selfies. Luckily, Wella Professionals has a in-salon color line inspired by the perennial app, called Instamatic. It’s a demi-permanent color formulated with the brand’s Color.id to allow colorist to paint the pigment throughout the without bleeding into one another for a cool, customized look. #NoFilterNeeded [Refinery 29]

Sunscreen is an essential in every skincare routine, but a few brands would rather have your sip than slather to stay protected. While some foods and subsequent juices have antioxidants, it can’t replace your daily dose of SPF. As Joshua Zeichner, an assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, explained, “Without rigorous, objective testing, I am hesitant to recommend any product. So long as you are using your sunscreen properly, as you would otherwise, I see no harm in drinking the water–with the exception of the harm it does to your pocketbook.” [Stylelist]

After months of anticipation, Jay Manuel’s HSN debut is nigh! In what is sure to be a spectacular, he’ll show off his eponymous collection, which includes 72 makeup must-haves to primp and perfect, plus innovative brushes and tools. Don’t worry, we’ve already created a wish list! [Glam Inbox]

We’ve always trusted Cricket to ensure that our strands stay stylish, but the brand is branching out further into tools with Beauty Hardware. The collection includes mani musts like cuticle pushers and nippers, eyelash curlers, brushes, tweezers, and even a skin tool extractor to safely bid goodbye to blemishes. Just don’t forget to keep it clean with a little bit of alcohol. [Glam Inbox]

Party Report: Boots Takes Over the Big Apple

By  March 25, 2015

THE PARTY: The Boots Beauty Experience

THE PLACE: Duane Reade Wall Street Flagship Store and The Bailey Pub

THE FARE: British Beef and Onions, Cheese and Onion Tarts, and more fare from across the pond.

THE DEETS: Boots staged a takeover of Duane Reade’s Flagship , complete with royal guards to guide editors through the many stations of the brand’s latest launches. As guests sipped and supped on UK-inspired fare, they could get shade matched for No 7’s Lift & Luminate Foundation, slather on the new Boots Botanics beauty buys, like the All Bright Radiance Balm, and receive a lip touch up with the new Shine & Tint Lip Gloss Stains.

But that wasn’t all: editors later made their way across the street to the pub for an acoustic set from Marina & the Diamonds. Songstress Marina Diamandis grew up next to a Boots and with the apothecary, and even used to wear the brand’s Moisture Drench Lip Color in Glam (natch). She gave the crowd a taste of her new album Froot with “Forget” and “Froot.” Consider the takeover mission accomplished!

Dry Oil Hydration: The Latest Skin Solution From La Prairie

By  March 24, 2015

Glam_Article_LaPrairie_DryOil_Slice

It may sounds odd, but dry oil gave me the most moisturized complexion of my life. Then again, nothing having to do with La Prairie’s ability to accomplish skincare miracles should surprise anyone at this point.

The luxurious anti-aging beauty brand has made magic in a jar again, this time with a special blend called Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Dry Oil. The product includes stem-cell extracts from several plants that flourish amid the harsh conditions of the Swiss Alps: Soldanella alpina, purple saxifrage, and Swiss snow algae. It also includes antioxidants, as well as almond, sunflower, and jojoba oils.

But the “dry oil” concept is what really grabbed my attention. Applying face oil under a moisturizer has been an ever-growing trend in skincare as of late, but La Prairie’s take on the idea is a little different. The substance is silky and smooth to the touch, but it’s not exactly liquid. A “sheer moisture-binding treatment oil,” as the brand refers to it, the oil seals instantly and seamlessly on dehydrated skin, providing all-day moisture and a shield against daily environmental stresses. I applied it in the morning and it lasted all day. At bedtime, I blended a drop of the oil with La Prairie’s Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Cream for extra oomph while I slept.

The oil is soothing and smoothing, whether you apply makeup on top or go without. On makeup days, it gave me an even, hydrated base. On days I went foundation-free, the slight sheen the oil provided was just the right amount of glow. It quickly proved to be one of those do-everything products, and it’s poised to become the new staple for the girl on the go who cares about her skin routine. During my time testing dry oil, I felt fulfilled and fancy. That’s the nature of La Prairie.

Jordana Brewster is the Fresh Face of Pond’s!

By  March 24, 2015

jordana-brewster-ponds

Jordana Brewster may be fast and furious (sorry we couldn’t help ourselves) but not when it comes her skincare. Especially since she’s just been named the new face of Pond’s!

Brewster is a second-generation fan of the skincare brand, following in the footsteps of her mom, who’s used the Cold Cream Cleanser for years. “It’s been around for years, 150 years or so, and it’s been tried and true with generations of women,” she told People, “And personally I’m excited to up my beauty routine from a basic moisturizer to one that has all of these delicious ingredients, like vitamin E, alpha-hydroxy acids and collagen.”

Since becoming a mom, she’s streamlined her beauty routine with major musts like Pond’s Rejuveness Cream, Charlotte Tilbury’s beach Sticks, and Tarte’s lush lippies. And with such a packed schedule, sometimes the day has to come off with just one wipe. “At the end of the day, as a mom, I’m way too tired to take my eye makeup off, and then scrub my face, so I just use the [Pond’s] Towelettes and then I’m done. It’s so, so nice,” she said.

Beauty Buzz: Tyra Picks Up a Pixie, Kendall Gets Colorful with Courrèges, and L’Oréal Turns the #PowerOn

By  March 23, 2015

beauty-buzz-3-23-15

While most of Hollywood is bobbing along this spring, Tyra Banks bucked the trend and opted for a pixie. She may have waited a while to snag the look for herself, but she finally debuted the look on Friday, posting a shot of the results on Twitter with the caption, “Snip #NotTooShort.” [People]

Kendall’s pumping up the pigment as the face of Estée Lauder’s Courrèges collection of colorful cosmetics. Bouncing around in hot pink and orange the vibrant hues are perfect for spring and arrive housed in space-age inspired packaging that young makeup mavens won’t be able to get enough of! [The Huffington Post]

We’ve all dealt with bad hair days (some more often than others), but L’Oreal Paris knows that when your locks look and feel lush, you’re completely “on.” The brand has launched its #PowerOn campaign to inspire mane mavens to share their best hair moment across social media from now until April 17. Using the hashtag and tagging the brand, they can win a trip to the Big Apple to meet Karlie Kloss, who’s the spokesmodel for the brand’s Advanced Haircare line. Whoo wouldn’t want to hang with the leggy lady and share strand secrets? Count us in! [WWD]

MAC is already amplifying our anticipation for Coachella by linking up with DJ Mia Moretti. The collaboration create a collection of a lip palette, two base creams, two multipurpose color creams, two lipsticks, and bags – all in electric hues suited for the festival’s Neon Carnival. We’re already adding the selections to our packing list! [Pop Sugar]

Tommy Bahama and Coola are both names synonymous with summer, but now the brands and joining forces for a total summer takeover and a new sunscreen line. The range includes sunscreen in the form of mineral, spray, and lotion formulas as well as lip balms and a Prefect 10 blend infused with willow bark, hemp, honeysuckle, and green tea to calm and soothe the skin. As Tommy Bahama executive vice president of marketing Rob Goldberg explained, “Sunscreen is not just a luxury for folks — it’s a necessity,” said Goldberg. “People are looking for the best protection they can find, and that’s what we’re hoping to give them with this partnership.” [WWD]

With April showers on their way, John Frieda is looking to keep your strands as smooth as possible with its new Beyond Smooth collection. The shampoo and conditioner uses coconut oil and the brand’s proprietary Frizz-Immunity Complex to smooth and control frizz from the inside out to improve the hair’s texture while the primer smoothes hair instantly by binding proteins inside the hair strand and preventing it from absorbing environmental moisture. Sleek strands with just a slather? We’re snapping this up ASAP! [Glam Inbox]

Dove is adding a dose of energy to our showers this spring with a new Go Fresh scent, Revitalize. Blending mandarin and tiare flower, the scent will be available as a body wash and soap to leave your skin feeling refreshed, hydrated, and silky. We’d save this for the mornings when you still can’t shake off the winter blues. [Glam Inbox]

Christina Hendricks Chats About Her New Blonde ‘Do, Mad Men, and Much More

By  March 23, 2015

You can’t call Christina Hendricks “Red” any more, as the Mad Men star recently lightened her locks to a honey-hued blonde with help from Clairol’s Nice ‘n Easy. The new hue marks her adieu to the iconic show, as well as a challenge for mane mavens who may be hesitant about dyeing their locks. Her solution is simple: #ShiftaShade to a new hue and see how it shakes things up. Glam sat down with star to reflect on her color change, her style and beauty cues, and even find out where she sees Joan after the series finale.

christina-hendricks-interview-1

On Going Blonde: It’s been a long time; it’s been 20 years. First of all, it was an easy process, and I’ve only been blonde for a short while. I’m enjoying it; every time I look in the mirror, I’m a little bit surprised. I forget, and I think, “Oh yeah, this is fun! It’s new.” It was really fun because to me, it’s something I’ve used since I was a teenager, so I know how to use it – I use it all of the time. We had talked about doing colors inspired by the red I was, and then I had told them I was actually thinking about going blonde. So we ended up going two-fold, and now here’s going to be a line of red and a line of blonde.

For Those Who Are Afraid of Dyeing Their Hair: You can shift a shade, and it doesn’t have to be this big dramatic move where everything has to change. It can be just for fun. I’m sure I’ll want to play around with my makeup and change some things; some things will probably works that didn’t before and vice versa. It’s easy to do. It’s not like you’re going to have to empty your wardrobe and start all over. Really, it’s just being playful and being open-minded and maybe being able to express a different side of yourself. I know that when I get a haircut or when I change my hair color, you sort of experiment with your personality a little bit, I think. Sometimes you need a little jumpstart like that; it should always be fun.

christina-hendricks-interview-3

On Her Style Icons and Favorite Designers: I really love Florence Welch. I think she’s beautiful, cool, chic woman. And I think Charlotte Gainsbourg is pretty cool. I think Kirsten Dunst looks pretty great. Going back, Katherine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Debbie Harry all of those women – very different, all completely different, and all unique.

I saw Zac [Posen’s] show and it was absolutely beautiful. It was different for him, quite different. But I have to be honest, I still haven’t gone to Style.com and seen everything yet. I’ve been so busy, but that’s how I usually catch up and see all of the shows is I go to Style.com and scroll down. I have to say, I’ve loved everything Michael Kors has been doing for a while and Valentino just blows my mind. I mean, it’s just so ethereal and so outrageously beautiful. Also Etro, I’m really loving what they’re doing. But I have to see all of the New York shows though.

christina-hendricks-interview-4

On Who She Almost Played on Mad Men and Where She Sees Joan in the ‘70s: I just want to play Joan – I mean I want to play all of them, but everyone was so fantastic in the role they played. It’s hard to see anyone else. But when I read the first script before anyone had been cast, I auditioned for Joan and then I auditioned for the Midge role, which in the pilot was Don’s mistress. She was an artist and she was wearing a kimono and on paper, I thought, “Oooh, this is the fun role,” because the other was a secretary who walked around bossing people around. I had this sort of image in my head. In fact, when I went to audition for it I wore this sheer kimono and jeans rolled up and little high heels – it was much more my look. And no one knew which characters were going to last and which ones weren’t, so I turned to my manager, and I said, “I just want the one that lasts the longest.” Not that I had a choice in the matter, but luckily, the one I got was the one that lasted the longest.

We left off in the beginning of Season A, I feel like she was really reaching her stride, and she was a partner, figuring out how to be a single mother. And I would like to think in the ‘70s, she would continue to be successful and raise her son well and fall in love. Joan always wanted to fall in love, so I would hope she lives happily ever.

christina-hendricks-interview-2

On Her Biopic Choice: I think it would be interesting to portray someone like Isadora Duncan. I find her extraordinary, and she had an interesting life. But that’s just one idea.

How to Switch Up Your Scent for the Start of Spring

By  March 23, 2015

spring-scent-transition

Though it still doesn’t feel like it in the Big Apple, it’s spring, meaning it’s time to switch up your hair and makeup routine. Still, fragrance tends to stick as a mainstay from season to season, since most people stand by their signature scent. But there’s no need to be afraid to brighten up your bouquet in the warmer weather. We turned to Arquiste’s fragrance aficionado Carlos Huber for his tips on transitioning your scent.

Know Your Notes – In order to shift your scent, look to your garden for the notes you need to update your aroma. “The coming of spring brings gentle breezes, warm sunshine and the blossoming of crisp, fragrant flowers,” Huber explains. “If you want to echo that feeling, it is best to use light, green, herbal and floral notes that give the fragrance an airy, cooling feel.”

All About That Base – Our signature scents have base notes that truly stand out on our skin thanks to our individual body chemistry, and they can indicate what other fragrance formulas you can try. “The notes that allow the easiest transition from winter to spring, are powdery, musky notes – light ambers, leathers and woody fragrances that are not too strong,” he said. Huber suggests trying Arquiste’s Infanta en Flor with its light orange blossom and a powdery amber or the unisex Architects Club, which has a refreshing gin and vanilla, tobacco, and woody base to anchor it.

Let Your Wardrobe Be Your Litmus Test – If you’re ready to put your winter coat in the back of the closet, you can start to shift your scent to airier fare but keep the warmer notes for painting the town red.  “Fragrance can warm you up or cool you down, so some people like for their scent to match their wardrobe,” he explained. “Once the weather begins to change and you transition to lighter clothing, keep the warming ambers and woods for the evening and choose a bright, refreshing spring fragrance for the daytime.”
