Day in the Life: Dr. Philip Kingsley, Trichologist

By  September 18, 2014

Philip-Kingsley-1

I started my hair and scalp clinic in London in 1960 and, due to a large USA following, opened my New York City centre in 1977. US Vogue had sent a ‘spy’ to check me out; I had no idea of this until Vogue wrote a fabulous review on me and my team which lead to people flying to London to experience my treatments. Both clinics are flourishing.

My wife Joan and I lived in New York for 14 years until we decided to come back and live in London, bringing our two daughters, then aged 11 and 8, to be further educated in the UK. We now live in London in Mayfair and I visit every 6 to 8 weeks to consult and oversee my clinic, where I am fortunate to have an amazing and dedicated team.

My typical London day:

7:30 a.m. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as far as hair is concerned, so I’m a fanatic about it! I start each day with a hearty plate of food, which usually involves smoked salmon, egg whites or bacon, either at home or at 5 Hertford St. After breakfast I exercise for 15 minutes touching my toes etc. to keep fit and flexible. Then I shower, and shampoo, condition, and style my hair using my products (of course).
9:00 a.m. I walk down to my office where I meet with my wonderful Executive Assistant, Susie Hammond, to catch up on emails and correspondence. These usually consist of questions from magazines such as Vogue, Oprah, Marie Claire, or established beauty bloggers. It fills me with pride how many quotes on hair I am for asked each day!
10:00 a.m. My first consultation appointment, of which I take one every hour. This always involves a full medical and family history, scalp examination and interpreting blood test results. I am rarely, if ever, idle during my day and have consultations booked for months in advance. Unless the World Cup is on, and, in which case, I may pencil out a few hours of my day. If one of my celebrity or Royal clients is coming in, however, I often see them before 8am if they want absolute privacy. However, many enjoy coming in during opening hours so that they can chat and catch up with my very knowledgeable trichotherapists. I remember Audrey Hepburn buying custom made shoes for all of my treatment girls in the 1980s, as they work so hard! It really is such a welcoming environment.
1:00 p.m. Lunch. Often a business lunch, or lunch with my best friend, the photographer Terry O’Neil (who was married to Faye Dunaway). With Terry, I usually go to The Great British on North Audley Street, and for business, Scotts or Harry’s Bar.
1:45 p.m. I rarely have long lunches except when it is business related. Then I meet with Jane Martin, my Personal Clinic Assistant, to go over patient blood tests results and correspondence. Following this, I visit my lab in the same building to discuss with Paul Franklin, my dedicated Laboratory Manager, new formulations, new products, and potentially useful ingredients coming onto the market. I will also meet with Carol Gillam, my Clinic Manager, and the irreplaceable Glenn Lyons, my Clinic Director. Glenn started training with me in 1964 and it is his 50th year with me this year.
2:45 p.m. Another consultation.
3:45 p.m. Talk to Aimee Rennard, my New York Clinic Manager, Graham Fish, Philip Kingsley Products Chairman, and Sinead Howard, Managing Director of PKP. Also my incredible daughter Anabel, who is Director of Communications. They are in another building with their own team, all of whom are dedicated and wonderful. I’m often thrown last minute requests, such as judging a beauty product contest, filming for QVC, commenting on the latest fad diet or, like last year, putting together product packs for the World Leaders attending the UN conference in London.
5:00 p.m. The end of my clinic day in London, but it is only 12pm in New York so I often continue with phone calls until around 7pm. It could be a worried patient, a member of the press, or a member of my Clinic Team. In the evening, I may have a business dinner or drinks which I try to avoid, but much prefer to see my friends, go the theatre, the Opera, or a charity gala. My favorite of all is to have dinner with my wife Joan, and two daughters Anabel and Katherine, who is a successful author and also helps me to write grammatically correctly! This is either at home or at my usual haunts: Scott’s, Hertford St, Roka, Harry’s Bar, Lucio’s or Coya. All in all a very interesting, diverse and busy life and I’m very lucky.

Add This Superfood to Your Skincare Routine

By  September 18, 2014

chia-seed-skincare

We know chia seeds have become a superfood staple in everyone’s kitchen … well those who have a healthy obsession. But the power packed seed is making moves from the health food store to the beauty counter.

Skincare brands are tapping into chia to harness the wealth of Omega fatty acids and vitamins that help to keep your face youthful and radiant. Plus, those with oily and combination skin can rejoice, as it also regulates sebum!

Dr. Perricone’s Chia Serum blends the super seed with five other essential oils to hydrate and give you an instant glow that you can apply on its own or mix it with your favorite moisturizer. Though it’s rose-based, Sunday Riley’s Isis Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil pulls chia’s hydrating power to help improve elasticity and ease fine lines and wrinkles. One Love’s Supercritical Chia Oil is a pure form of the superfood that it easily absorbed in the skin to help improve skin tone and texture.

This is one superfood we won’t be leaving on the shelf!

Beauty Buzz: Beauty Secrets of a Supermodel, Kilian on the Catwalk, and Oxygen’s Mani Madness

By  September 17, 2014

Linda Evangelista may have been primped by the best in the biz, but it doesn’t mean she’s afraid to do it herself. The supermodel opened up to Into the Gloss about her beauty routine, including her therapeutic manicures, her collection of lotions and potions, and even the perfect technique for foundation. She explained, “I pat it in with my fingers while my skin is still moist, just to even out my skin tone—my fingers work better than a brush. I really think you can pound it in with your fingers instead of just pushing it around on top of your skin.” [Into the Gloss]

It’s official: Veronica Beard had the jump on putting perfume in their runway shows. The designer partnered with Kilian to curate a selection of scents for their recent Spring 2015 show, which turned in a fresh set to snap up. It include a travel spray atomizer and 4 of the brand’s aromas, including “Prelude to Love, Invitation,” “Love and Tears, Surrender,” “Straight to Heaven, White Crystal,” and “Liaisons Dangereuses, Typical Me.” Just don’t be surprised if you start stomping the sidewalk like it’s a catwalk. #ManiMondays are making a move if Oxygen has anything to say about it. The network that brought us The Face is taking the reality competition route to our tips with a new show called Nail’d It!  Hosted by Adrienne Bailon, the show will test the skills of 18 mani mavens as the look to impress the judges, including industry insiders like CND Founder Jan Arnold, celebrity manicurists Tom Bachik and Terrance Terry, and more. We’ll be watching and taking notes! [Oxygen]

We don’t mind admitting when we’re wrong, but this was unexpected! We previously postulated Miley Cyrus inspired Malin Ackerman’s pretty pixie, but it looks like she looked to the barbershop for her fresh cut.  “It’s a bit David Beckham!” she told InStyle. “I’ve been wanting a really drastic change—I’ve always loved shaved heads. Obviously, that’s a bit drastic, but I had nothing in my near future work-wise, so I just thought, I’m going to do what I want to do.” This is a fresh take on borrowing from the boys! [InStyle]

Lupita Nyong’o & Elmo Love The Skin They’re In

By  September 17, 2014

Skin is in for fall and next spring, and Lupita Nyong’o has found a new friend to help spread the word.

The Oscar winning actress took a trip to Sesame Street to chat with Elmo about the importance of our skin, even if it’s under fur. Not only does it help feel textures, enjoy a few tickles, but even shows how healthy we are by protecting us. Elmo did note that Nyong’o’s skin was soft and glowing (as to be expected from the Most Beautiful Woman in the World), but he also noted the rich, dark tone of it. “That’s the thing I love most about skin,” she said in the clip. “Skin comes in lots of beautiful shades and colors.”

With our most visible feature taking center stage this season, there are a few tips to shake up your skincare routine when temperature begins to drop. You can start by stepping away from the scrubs, as exfoliating too often during the chillier months can dry you out. You can also cocktail a hydrating serum, like Boscia’s new Cool Blue Hydration Essence, with your regular night cream to maximize moisture. Here’s to loving the skin you’re in!

Jennifer Lawrence may have it in the bag with Dior, but Natalie Portman maintains some serious star power. The Knight of Cups star channeled Old Hollywood as the face of the brand’s newest foundation, DiorSkin Star, which is its first brightening foundation to correct blemishes and wrinkles. Shine bright, Natalie! [Fashion Gone Rouge]

We spent most of Fashion Week wondering where all of the color had gone. Apparently it was one the other side of the pond, as Burberry sent its girls out rocking an almost effortless red lip. If you want to take your Spring 2015 makeup from desk to drinks, a swipe of the brand’s Lip Cover Soft Satin Lipstick in Ruby won’t interrupt the rest of your look. [The Cut]

Jamie Chung Shares Her Front Row Fixtures

By  September 16, 2014

To be honest, we’re still bouncing back from our NYFW hangover, so to see Jamie Chung out and about was a surprise. The Once Upon a Time star came out to the premiere of Origins’ new documentary mere days after attending a slew of fashion shows. On the Road with Origins chronicled journey to find the ingredients of it latest launch, the Plantscription Anti-Aging Power Serum, on three different continents. In between bites of delicacies from France, Australia, and Ghana (where the ingredients were sourced), Glam got the scoop from the front row fixture on how she handled the madness.

We saw you a lot at the tents; how did you survive?

I was hanging onto a thread because as much as I love fashion shows, it was way too much for me. In the end, it’s all about the clothes, and I was thrilled to be a part of it and see what the designers have up their sleeves.

How did you treat yourself after all of the fashionable fêtes?

A lot of sleep, not enough exercise. Literally, I would go home at 9:00 p.m. and be in bed by 9:30 p.m. I need my beauty sleep.

What would you pack in your Fashion Week survival kit next season?

If the bag was large enough, a private masseuse for daily appointments. (Just kidding.) It would be a gift certificate for a foot massage after wearing all the heels, a manicure/pedicure kit. It would have collagen eye patches, and lots of water, vitamin C, and hand sanitizer.

Who are some of your style icons?

Coco Rocha is here, and I was literally having a fangirl moment, but I really love Olivia Palermo and Miranda Kerr.

What is your favorite Origins product?

The new Plantscription Anti-Aging Power Serum - it uses all of the extracts they found in France, Australia, and Ghana. What I love about is all the natural ingredients, and I love that they’re doing this whole campaign so you can actually see the ingredients. I think that’s important to see versus tons of chemicals you don’t understand and putting it on your face.

The latest techniques, creative color combos, and funky finishes came together as eye candy for beauty editors and nail ninjas alike to recreate and perfect in time for spring to come back around once again. Here are a few of the favorites we spotted backstage; sorry, no nudes allowed.

Beauty Buzz: Demeter Does LFW, A Beauty Cream That Breaks The Bank, and Weddding-Worthy Nail Art

By  September 15, 2014

beauty-buzz-9-15-14

It’s not just makeup, hair, and skincare brands getting the models revved up to rock the runway. Turns out Demeter Fragrance Library partnered with Palmer//Harding for its fashion show on Sunday. The brand combined Magnolia, Oud, and Dust from its archive to scent the space, tapping into the designers’ inspiration of finding the beauty in aging. Talk about a truly sensory experience! [Glam Inbox]

When it comes to anti-aging, apparently no price is too high! Dr. Alexandrides of 111 Skin crafted the Celestial Black Diamond Cream, which was developed with former Soviet space scientists. Derived of a potent Vitamin C derivative, Escin, and black diamonds (yeah, you read that right), the cream increases antioxidants that protects and repair skin as well as increase circulation for better absorption. While the black diamonds aren’t active ingredients, it pushes the price up to $1,095. Time to pay up, kittens. [Fashionista]

Brides-to-be, if you want your digits to be as decadent as your dress, listen up! Bridal & commitment jeweler extraordinaire Anna Sheffield partnered with Marie Nails salon to customize wedding-worthy nail art that complements her designs. For just $65, you can kiss the classic French and bid goodbye to something blue on your tips and toes for your big day. [Glam Inbox]

With the start of the new season, it’s time to re-evaluate your skincare routine, and Clinique is here to help! The beauty brand will set up shop on September 18 at Bloomingdales 59th Street in the Big Apple to provide comprehensive consultations. Skin savants will not only receive Clinique’s new Smart Custom-Repair Serum to test-drive, but they’ll also create customized smartphone designed on the spot by fashion illustrator Brooke Hagel. Such a smart idea! [Glam Inbox]

Kiehl’s is giving back once again for the golden anniversary of its iconic Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion. The skincare staple comes wrapped in limited edition packaging designed by renowned photographer Christopher Makos, featuring images that are an homage to New York City. Plus, many large-scale prints of the featured snaps will be up for exhibition and auction in the brand’s flagship from September 18-25 with all proceeds benefitting the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Zosia Mamet Talks Her New Tresses and Top Trends

By  September 15, 2014

It seems (platinum) blondes have more fun off the set of Girls. Zosia Mamet is the latest star to snag the Hollywood hue along with a chic cropped cut.

The HBO darling recently wrapped up season 4 – yes, we can’t wait for it either – allowing her to try out the bold color she hadn’t tested in a while just for fun. “I got to go blonder a few years ago for a play, and that was the first time I dyed my hair,” she told People in a new video. “I only got to have it for like three months, and then I had to go back to being a brunette for the show.”

The shade switch wasn’t her only big change – she rid herself of Shoshanna’s signature long locks in lieu of a cute ear-length bob, making it much easier for her to sleep at night.  Mamet explained, “If I turned over at night, I’d have to throw my hair [over] first, because it was so long that if I turned into it, it would strangle me. Having short hair is just so easy.”

When it comes to her own style she has a few sticking points, including picking fresh flats over haute heels and killer cross-bodies over cute clutches. But when it comes to her character, there’s no shortage of crafty hair accessories up her sleeve. “I don’t think you can choose between headbands or clips,” Mamet said. “She’d probably choose both.”
