BET Honors Black Girls Who Rock!

Last week, the Bronx rolled out the red carpet to honor black women who have empowered the community through philanthropy and activism for the 2nd annual televised special, Black Girls Rock. Hosted by Regina King and Tracee Ellis Ross at the Paradise Theater, stars like Lala Anthony, Alek Wek, Tichina Arnold and Sharon Leal honored black women who are inspirational and positive role models in the community, which is the aim of the youth empowerment organization.

The Star Power Award was given to Taraji P. Henson, celebrating her talent that earned her an Oscar nod for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Laurel J. Richie was honored with the Shot Caller Award for her work with not only the WNBA but for her previous work with Girl Scouts USA. Angela Davis’ tireless activism the rights of blacks, women, gays and prisoners earned her Icon Award. Actress, singer and Harvard grad Tatyana Ali was honored for her work as an education activist with the Young, Black & Gifted Award. Imani Walker and Malika Saada Saar earned the Trailblazer Award for the Rebecca Project for Human Rights push for justice and dignity for women in the U.S. and Africa. The First Lady of Gospel, Shirley Caesar, was presented with the Living Legend Award for her career that has spanned over 40 albums and earned her 11 Grammys and 18 Doves.

Explosive performances from Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, and Estelle were true highlights of the evening. Melanie Fiona performed her new single from her new L.P. while newcomer Elle Varner debuted her very first single, “I Only Want to Give It to You.” A surprise performance from Mary Mary and Shirley Caesar had the audience on their feet in praise on a joyous evening.

Black Girls Rock! will air on November 6th at 8pm on BET.
