Anyone who’s spent a summer in New York City has undoubtedly heard the question, “So are you going to the Hamptons this weekend?” While East Hampton, Southampton, and Amagansett have cemented their role as mainstays for the upper echelon escaping the summer heat, Montauk has quickly become a must-visit for twenty-somethings looking for a summer vacation spot of their own. What once was a quiet, sleepy town has turned into the ideal escape out East.
Where to Stay:
Ruschmeyers – 161 2nd House Rd, (631) 668-2877
Miss summer camp? Then you’ll really love Ruschmeyers. Thanks to ping-pong tables, grills, and a lawn called The Magic Garden, the three acres of land will have you harkening back the nights you spent lakeside catching fireflies and evading lights out. Only this time, you’re the master of your own schedule, and the hotel can provide endless entertainment.
Surf Lodge - 183 Edgemere Street (631) 483-5037
For those with a passion for the sun, sea, and surf, this will be your home away from home. Though it gets a bit rowdy on the weekend thanks to the influx of city dwellers, it’s an ideal location for a quick getaway. With a mix of old school touches and modern day amenities, it’s all too easy to get lost in Surf Lodge for the weekend.
Sole East - 90 Second House Road, (631) 688-2105
As the hotel choice for the fashion crowd, Sole East obviously exudes an extra sense of luxury and style. Minimalistic style pairs well with the relaxed scene by the pool, where it’s common to languish on the oversized beds surrounding the deck.
Where to Eat:
La Brisa – 752 Montauk Highway, (631) 668-8338
For all the taco lovers in Manhattan who regularly flock to Tacombi, don’t stress about how to get your fix while out East. The always popular venue just launched their summer outpost, featuring breakfast tacos, fresh tortillas, and three, yes three, different kinds of fish tacos depending on the day’s catch.
Navy Beach – 16 Navy Road, (631) 668-6868
Whether you’re on vacation with friends, or taking a weekend away with your significant other, you’ll want to coordinate your reservations with the sunset. Located right on the pond, Navy Beach’s water location provides the ultimate viewing experience in all of Montauk. Round out the evening with an order of one of the many types of ceviche and decadent sides.
Duryea’s Lobster Deck – 65 Tuthill Road, (631) 668-2410
Leaving Montauk without enjoying a lobster roll would be a complete sin, given its history as a fishing village. Sit outside at Duryea’s and dive into their fresh seafood with a breathtaking view of Fort Pond Bay and Gardiner’s Bay.
What To Do:
Beginning the weekend of the 4th of July, Yoga Lila will begin offering group classes of SUP yoga, in addition to their regular classes at the studio. It’s a fun way to switch up your practice, while testing your core strength and embracing Montauk’s nature and surroundings! Private lessons (with equipment included) are priced at $165, while group classes cost $35 if you have your own board, and $75 if not.
During the winter months, founder Adam Rosante brings his high intensity workout to a studio in Manhattan. But when the weather is warm enough, he takes over the deck at Ruschmeyers for early Saturday morning workouts. In a world where one spin class can be as expensive as $35, Rosante’s making a bold statement with his pay what you wish policy. He’ll get your endorphins going and help you sweat off the week before many of your fellow Montauk friends have even had their morning coffee.
A trip to Montauk isn’t complete until you’ve had one of Cyril’s legendary B.B.C.s. Fruity, frozen, and delicious, these rum infused cocktails will transport you to the tropics. If you’re feeling extra frisky, add a floater for more rum fun.
Outside of the (growing) social scene for those escaping from the city for the weekend, Montauk is an absolutely beautiful seaside location, complete with ocean views and a quaint nautical feel. Rent bikes for the afternoon and take a calm ride through the town center to Montauk Point Lighthouse, the oldest in New York state!
