More from the, “Oh, you worrrrrk….” files:
My youngest child started kindergarten.
Since he had a half day on the first day, we went out to lunch after school.
While we were eating, a woman, whom I recognize from school, came up to us. Though we have mutual friends, I don’t really know her.
But, I know of her. Big difference.
Woman (to my son, seeing his uniform): “Oh, you must be in kindergarten at St. School!”
Me (after my child looked blankly at her): “Yes, he is. And, I think you have one in kindergarten, too?”
Woman: “Yes!”
Me: “I’m Elizabeth, I’m a friend of Sara’s.”
Woman: “Oh! I tried to call you yesterday!”
Me (thinking): “Wha’?”
Woman: “You work, don’t you?”
Me: “Um, yes.” (??)
Woman: “Yeah, they told me I wouldn’t be able to get hold of you, so I didn’t call back. We were trying to get kindergarteners together for a swim party, yesterday. But, well, you worrrrrrk.”
Me: “…”
For the record, my MIL was home all day with my son that day. There was no record of her call on caller ID, and, “they” who told her I work, would also likely know how to get hold of me at “worrrrrrrk”.
People are weird.
