With The Dark Knight now in theaters and doing extremely well (bringing in $66.4 million in it’s opening day alone) there has been a decent amount of talk with comparing the Rachel Dawes character with Katie Holmes and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Katie obviously took on the role first in Batman Begins and then simply turned down the role (after hooking up with Tom Cruise) for The Dark Knight with her people saying she was unable to accept the role because of ’scheduling issues’ with the box office flop Mad Money, which she so blindly picked to star in instead.
Maggie Gyllenhaal almost turned down the part, fearing she wouldnt be as good as her predecessor Katie admitting she was hesitant to accept the part until she knew she would have the freedom to create a new character for the role with Holmes’ blessing saying:
“I wanted to be sure, first of all, that I had her blessing. And I was assured that I did. I’m a big fan of hers, I think she was really great in the first movie.
“And yet I felt like it wouldn’t have done anyone any good if I tried to imitate her. Really what I decided was that it had to be a whole new woman. If I’m going to do what I do well, I have to be free to do it.”
I just went and saw the movie earlier today and I think Maggie did a fantastic job although my husband (who used to be a huge Katie fan pre-Tom Cruise) would argue otherwise.
Now back to the whole Katie turning down the role thing….One of my friends gets text message updates with the latest gossip and last night she got one saying that:
Katie Holmes turned down the role of Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight because Lord Xenu told her that her scientology beliefs conflicted with the films message.
How creepy is that??
