Who doesn’t love balloons? I haven’t seen this doc yet, but it’s definitely on my list.
TWISTED: A Balloonamentary (don’t you love that name?!) is getting some great buzz (240,000 hits on the YouTube trailer, Boing Boing, Best Week Ever blog, and Entertainment Weekly blog). Director Sara Taksler emailed me last week about the film, and it looks funny and fabulous.
The Hollywood Reporter called the film “one of those wide-grin quirkster documentaries one hopes to discover every festival season, a thoroughly winning feature.”

TWISTED: A Balloonamentary is a feature documentary that explores how eight people’s lives are transformed when they discover balloon twisting conventions (who knew?). One woman uses money from balloon twisting to get off welfare, an ex-con finds the gospel through balloons, and a grandfather from a tough neighborhood twists to show kids an alternative to selling drugs and joining gangs.
The film has screened at 13 film festivals and has been a huge hit with critics. It also includes a short, animated segment — narrated by The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart (Sara is a producer on the show) — about passion, salvation, love, death, race, religion, and a whole lot of balloons.
But the film’s not without controversy. Check out this story in the New York Times about some of the more “adult” uses for balloon twisting. I’m really tempted to say “whatever floats your balloon” here, but will refrain…oh wait…
