Sudden hearing loss and stroke

Taiwanese researchers found that sudden hearing loss may foreshadow a stroke by as much a two years:

Five-year follow-up data on 1,423 patients hospitalized for an acute episode of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) showed they were more than one-and-a-half times more likely to suffer a stroke than a control group of 5,692 patients who had been hospitalized for an appendectomy.

Though more research is needed, it’s important that hearing loss patients be assessed carefully for their risk for stroke.

Low IQ and dementia risk

A study by Scottish researchers found a link between a person’s childhood IQ and the risk for developing vascular dementia.

Vascular dementia is the second most common form of dementia behind Alzheimers disease. A diagnosis of Alzheimers disease, however, did not appear to be linked to childhood IQ scores.

They compared the rate of vascular dementia among people with lower and higher IQ scores on tests taken when they were children. Results from impaired blood flow to the brain were 40 percent more likely to have scored lower on the IQ tests when they were kids.

Why might IQ have a relationship to vascular dementia?

John Starr, of the University of Edinburgh who led the study hypothesized:

“It may be that IQ is a measure of system integrity,” Starr said in a telephone interview. “The IQ may reflect something about the brain and the brain’s control over vascular disease later on.”

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to check my childhood testing scores.

Just in case.

80 year old runs ultramarathon

I love stories like this:

It took him longer than he wanted, but Saturday was such a glorious bright and clear day to run 50 miles along Hungry Horse Reservoir that Bob Hayes wasn’t too disappointed to finish the Le Grizz ultramarathon in 11 hours, 4 minutes.

It went OK, I finished OK and I feel pretty good right now, said the 80-year-old runner from Evaro. I was slower than last year. I’d like to think I don’t get slower, but because of age you do, and I did.

I’m not even positive I can run a mile at this moment.

Financial elder abuse
By: Gen Between    3 days 19 hours 52 minutes ago

Financial elder abuse is a growing problem and it affects seniors in all socio-economic and cultural groups.

People take advantage of seniors who may be unaware of a problem, afraid of the abuser, ashamed of being “tricked”, confused or simply trusting of the abuser.

It can happen to anyone as Suebob found out. Her parents are elderly and the son of a family friend came to “visit” and talked them out of a large sum of money:

I wasn’t there but Mom said he had some story about how he has a work of art that needs to be photographed and reproduced so he can make money and the artwork is huge and out of state and he can’t afford to travel because he is totally destitute, and oh by the way, his friend is waiting over in the Burger King parking lot and they have no gas and they are 100 miles from home and they have no food and they are starving.

I am so angry for her. While one could argue that giving him the money was their choice, it sure sounds like this guy preyed upon their generous nature, and that’s wrong.

Managing Your Parents Finances
By: Gen Between    4 days 16 hours 31 minutes ago

When my mother was sick, I gained a fuzzy idea about the details of handling finances by watching my dad handle the expenses, and ultimately her estate after her death.

However, I know that I have a lot to learn before I’ll need to handle my dad’s finances in any capacity. Many people learn what to do by trial and error, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the things that need to be done.

CNN Money has a good article, Managing your folks’ money: 5 steps:

1. Create a single guide that summarizes all financial information.
2. Get a broad Power of Attorney (POA) document.
3. Close the loopholes by making sure that each financial institution will accept that POA.
4. Get additional proxies for health care.
5. Go slowly. If possible, dont take over everything all at once.

It makes some great points, especially the fact that you need to contact each institution to find out what their requirements are for acting on someone else’s behalf.

For example, as I found out, even something as simple as adding someone to a safe deposit box access at the bank isn’t all that simple, and everyone with access to the box has to be present at the same time and resign the papers each time there is a change.

Even if you don’t think it’s time to talk to your parents about their finances, remember the 40-70 rule and that illness and accidents can happen, regardless of age and it’s always better to be prepared.
