The client Amy Kleinberg, 32, an IBM managing consultant living in Brooklyn.
The problem: weight gain Over the past one and a half years, Kleinberg quit smoking, got married, and had a baby. There were a lot of understandable reasons I put on pounds, she says. But regardless, I was two sizes larger than I used to be.
The guru David Kirsch, the owner of Manhattans Madison Square Club gym and author of
The Ultimate New York Diet, has a reputation for whipping time-pressed models and mortals into shape with a combination of strict dietary guidelines (no alcohol, dairy, fat, bread, sugar, fruit, or caffeine for the first two weeks) and copious squats, lunges, and cardio.
He also created his own line of
supplements, including antioxidant-rich Vitamin/Mineral drink mix and ephedra-free Thermo Bubbles powder, which he claims (there are no studies to back this up) is
calorie-burning thanks to vitamin B6 and arginine.
The No. 1 reason people eat poorly is that they dont have time to prepare healthy food, he says. Im trying to make it easy to get proper nutrients if youre on the go.
The program
Hardcore is the only way to describe this book, Kleinberg says. I like to unwind in the evenings with a glass of pinot noir. I was worried that I couldnt stick it out.
She exercised 60 minutes a day three times a week with Kirsch, then used his DVDs at home or went to the gym two other days, in addition to following David Kirschs
diet plan. I realized that this program required 100 percent of my focus and attention, Kleinberg says. It was a full-time job!
The results Kleinberg lost seven pounds, her body fat decreased by 5 percent, and she went down two pants sizes. Maintaining a version of Davids diet seems very doable, she says, although Ill admit, Im adding back fat, salt, and wine. [source:
