Last Thursday in Chelsea, Brooklyn based painter Shinique Smith presented her collection of bundle-inspired works in her latest show entitled
All Pupose. In this show, Smith incorporates elements of graffiti, street environment, religious and morality themes, and at times, emotional despair into each bundle of found objects, tied with various strings, glues, and tape. Notable pieces include
Glutton, a golden bundle that rests atop a crimson velvet cloth, with a stained denim background-a seeming reference to the Jesus/Mary symbolism found in Renaissance paintings. Voodoo Child is a haunting bundle, suspended against a stark white wall, giving it a flat, graphic-like quality.
In December, Smith will be featured in "Recognize: Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture" at the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery.
