Just back from backstage at the Derek Lam show, where I got to spy on makeup artist and Shiseido Creative Director Tom Pecheux and runway hair guru Orlando Pita in action. And I'm happy to report that if the beauty looks at Derek Lam are any indication, fall is headed in a subtly sexy directionwhich will come as a welcome break by the time we're done sporting spring and summer's bold red lips and bright, Pop Art eyes.

According to Pecheux, the look he produced on Hilary Rhoda, Jessica Stam, and Chanel Iman (a few of the gazelles who walked for Lam) was meant to evoke a sophisticated urban woman who doesn't have time to spend fussing with makeup, but who would never leave home without it. Hence the emphasis on contrastpale, matte skin paired with black, kohl-rimmed eyes underscored by a little smudge of navy blue shadowwhich gives you maximum impact with minimum effort. As for the other half of the equation, the hair, tress expert Orlando Pita produced a similarly quiet study in contrasts by wrapping strips of leatherbondage stylearound a soft, feminine French twist. And speaking of soft and feminine, the model weight debate rages on. I overheard Chanel Iman swearing that she and her colleagues really do eat. Meanwhile, I spied some of this "eating," and it basically entailed picking at carrots and fruit, and ripping pita triangles into eighths.
