** A Little History ** What is 5 de Mayo? This is the second most important holiday in Mexico (the first one being its Day of Independence, 16 de Septiembre).
5 de Mayo is a holiday remembering the
Batalla de Puebla in which the Mexicans defeated the powerful French army. Mexico was indebted to Spain, Britain and France. Both, Spain and Britain accepted the terms of President Benito Juarez to be paid back in payment warrants, but the French did not want to. Instead, the French Goverment under Louis Napoleon prompted its troops to invide the country and head to Mexico City. To access the capital, they needed to cross through Puebla where the French Army was defeated despite having a much larger and better equipped army. Although this victory did not last long because the French resumed the attack, invaded the country, and imposed a French Emperor, La Batalla de Puebla showed the courage and love for freedom that impelled the Mexicans to fight back the French regardless of their ill-equipped army making them real heros.
