After viewing the
Max Azria Spring '08 collection as well as his
BCBG line, it's safe to say that, in terms of handbags,
camel is the new black. This basic and understated color is expertly combined with creams and blacks to fashion a winning color palette for Azria's handbags. This wise mix will compliment practically everything in a woman's closet. Large (but not over-sized) envelope clutches, frame top handbags and sleek shoulder bags comprise this smart selection of arm candy. My favorite piece, a sleek, camel-colored clutch with cream trim and a black slide-thru tab closure, is a perfect example of a modern handbag's ability to possess that intangible quality which gives it a timeless appeal.

The day wear pieces that make up Azria's collection are feminine, chic and very wearable. His evening wear dresses and gowns are tailored in a demure and forgiving manner without a total lack of structure. I prefer his flattering silhouettes to
Vera Wang's mostly unstructured (and slightly depressing) collection.
Max Azria pays more attention to a woman's body than his female peers - how disappointing. Still, there is no need to detract attention from his lovely collection by focusing on the follies of Azria's fellow designers. The entire collection's palette, mostly creams, browns, greys and whites, is a welcome respite from this fall's "sledgehammer-like" use of black. So there you have it, ladies, camel is the new black! Thank goodness (and Max Azria, too).
