Who said opposites don’t attract? Frances McDormand and Amy Adams are perfectly cast in an old-fashioned romantic comedy set in the glamorous world of London before World War II. Based on a novel by Winifred Watson, “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” is a snappy little film that’s high on charm. McDormand takes the role of Miss Pettigrew, a plain London governess who’s down on her luck, while Adams assumes the part of Delysia Lafosse, a quirky wannabe actress (she’s just a steelworker’s daughter from Pittsburgh) with a long list of gentlemen suitors. When Miss Pettigrew finds out that Delysia is looking for an assistant, she falls into the beautiful world of British high society. Miss Pettigrew is able to overcome some scandalous first impressions long enough to revel in her new experience. Directed by Bharat Nalluri, the flick packs plenty of screwball hysterics, but it’s the growth of the characters — Miss Pettigrew and Delysia — that sets this one apart from most modern-day romantic comedies. As time goes by, the characters rub off on each other.

I can’t stand dresses that use fabrics fit for drapes. What, you can’t leave home without it? But she does have pretty nude peep toes on.
