The best place to see live local and indie bands in Chicago, the Empty Bottle is crowded, dirty, smoky, loud… everything you would expect a good rock club to be. And even though it sits right on the corner of its intersection, you may have a hard time finding it. That’s because the Empty Bottle’s sign isn’t easily recognizable from the street, so you’re better off just looking for the faded black awning that declares “Dancing” and “Friendly” over the door.
Once inside, the front room greets you with a few couches, a pinball machine, and a pool table. The venue is L-shaped, so you’ll have to go through the stage area in order to get a drink. Step up to the long, vintage wooden bar, and choose from the large selection of (cheap!) bottled and on-tap beers. You may have to speak up a little bit; often the bartenders wear earplugs to protect themselves from the loud music. In fact, if you find your own eardrums suffering, you can buy your own pair at the bar as well.
Drink now in hand, mingle with the crowd, which is primarily made up of trendy indie hipsters. You’ll find plenty of haircut bangs and thick-black-framed glasses here. Most of the clientele are regulars and/or from the neighborhood. Few people are here for the conversation though; this place is all about the music. A three-foot high stage sits in the back corner and usually features acts well-known in the underground scene. And best of all, admission rarely costs over $10, and there’s usually a beer on special for $2 or less.
No, the Empty Bottle isn’t for everyone. It’s dark and “hip,” but it’s always good for a fun time and an original show.
