This month at Lively Women, we’re talking about the history of abortion in the US and around the world. Discussion is encouraged, and additional information and resources are welcomed. Please leave a comment!

On Tuesday, we talked about abortifacient herbs, and I promised to discuss some of the 20 herbs listed in more detail. Read on to learn more about wormwood.

WORMWOOD, also known as mugwort, causes uterine contractions, leading to abortion. In cases of unsuccessful abortion, wormwood has been known to cause birth defects. It is not recommended for use during breastfeeding.

Medical uses include stomach infection/parasites (hence the worm part of its name) and appetite problems. It has also been used as an insect repellent (and a flea and tick bath for dogs). It can be used to make vermouth and, of course, absinthe. Unsurprisingly, it’s potentially habit forming, which makes sense when you consider that it’s often delivered in preparations containing alcohol and/or sugar.
