Imitation isnt the sincerest for of flattery.......well at least for Nicole Miller. As you may recall Fashion designer power house Diane Von Furstenberg obviously wasnt playing any games when she decided to take action against Forever 21 for re-creating a spin off version of Von Furstenbergs Cerisier Shift Dress!!!! Its seems that a lot of designers are becoming annoyed as well!!! Nicole Miller went to Capital Hill yesterday with the help of other fashion insiders to help protect the copyrights of fashion designers. Diane von Furstenberg is among one of the many designers going fourth in an aggressive campaign to help fight against Design Piracy. Nicole Miller is in "hot pursuit" to enforce the the Design Piracy Prohibition Act.
About this potential law:
Design Piracy Prohibition Act that would amend current copyright law to
allow companies and designers to register fashion designs for three
years of copyright protection; apparel, handbags, footwear, belts and
eyeglass frames would be covered. The measure would also establishes
penalties for designers or companies knocking off designs. The fine
would be $250,000, or $5 for each copied item, whichever was more. - WWD
"It has gotten to a point at which, unless we get regulation, people will continue to boast about copying," said von Furstenberg, famous for her ubiquitous wrap dress. "Laws are really about intimidation, and we need to have a little law here and a little intimidation. By passing a law, we emphasize the value of designs. It is not an elitist thing. Even Target and Wal-Mart are beginning to use designers in their stores." - WWD
Are you serious???? I understand that designer hard bodies are trying to hold tight of their designs & creations....but
EVERY SINGLE DESIGNER known to MAN has bait & switched styles & ideas from the beginning of time!!!!For the folks who are lost in the midst of this post let me break it down to you in
street terms:
Take for example:
Notice all of the recycled trends that are flooding the web as of late......such as florals, plaid, tweeds....etc
- Designers all have a code of the season!!! THEY ALL DO - SO DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!!
- Designers pick a style or trend that they would like to resurrect from the dead..
- Sketch out their designs.....
- Designers huddle together to cut, paste & remix their ideas..
- Slam it on the runways of Milan ,Paris, London & New York..
- Global Franchise Chains such as: H &M , Forever 21, Target....etc take the same idea from what has seen on the runways & mass produce these items....and sell it for a lower price!!! [Hence the term: Affordable Fashion]
The bottom line is.....Big Labels feel a pinch in their pockets and want to make a BIG STINK about NOTHING!!!! Calm down and let it just be....wouldnt you agree??? Why do you think the discount giant Target went the extra mile to recruit high-end names such as Stella McCartney, Proenza Schouler, Behnaz Sarafpour, and many other main stream designers to create affordable collections for their stores??? So that you dont have episodes such as this......is pretty cut & dry if you ask me!!!!
- That reminds me....FOLKS, I WILL BE RIGHT BACK I GOT TO DO MY LAUNDRY!!! I will be back in a few.... So feel free to comment!!!
