Brunching for the Gold: Team USA and Hollywood Elite Unite at Equinox

By  January 17, 2013

Olympic gold medalists and Golden Globe nominees have much in common–both are chasing the gold, both capture the hope and aspirations of a nation, and both are tasked with staying in incredible shape. It makes sense then, that Equinox brought the two groups of stars together for an inaugural Gold Meets Golden brunch at its new LA flagship.

Hosts Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, and Bon Jovi, who were all nominated for a globe, held court beneath a photo of Kidman as the excited Olympians rushed over to meet them. Volleyball player Kerry Walsh Jennings, who was showing off her baby bump talked mommyhood with the Australian actress. Kidman, who looked statuesque in a white Oscar de la Renta suit, only wanted to know if Walsh Jennings knew she was pregnant when she was playing in London. “I felt like something was going on inside,” she said. The actress assured the athlete that after giving birth she’ll be back on her feet in no time. “I was working 10 days later,” Kidman said.

Gymnasts Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman bopped around the bash with an extra pep in their step.” I just found out that we get to walk the Golden Globes red carpet,” Raisman said. ” Now I have to find something to wear…I’m hoping to run into Ryan Reynolds.”  Track and Field superstar Allyson Felix also happens to be a style star; she already had her Diane von Furstenberg dress picked out for the after parties.

The athletes who came in from out of town turned the W they were staying at into an Olympic Village of sorts, while locals like swimmer Ricky Berens and soccer star Alex Morgan merely had to drive over to see their teammates. “This is my one event of the weekend,” said Morgan, who tends to avoid the Hollywood hooplah. “I have to be in the mood for the scene.”  For her, the brunch presented an opportunity to catch up with her Team USA friends and check out Equinox’s new digs. “This gym is is unreal!” Morgan marveled. Swimmer Missy Franklin intended to take advantage of the facilities after the event and asked for access to the pool. Because in Hollywood…the road to gold is never ending.
