Buffy Creator and Shakespeare- Perfect Combination?

By  November 03, 2011

Talk about overachieving. In between finishing production for  The Avengers, promoting a new comic book and his film, The Cabin in the Woods, nerd-Messiah Joss Whedon has apparently already finished production of another project. And  this one has nothing to do with space, robots, vampires, or comic book heroes. Whedon’s new venture is a modern take on William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.

Created and written in a month and filmed in 12 short days, Whedon created a black-and-white “noir comedy” jam-packed with alumni from all of his previous projects. For anyone who unfamiliar with the Shakespeare classic, the story revolves around one unlikely couple, two complicated love stories and a few dastardly deeds thrown into the mix.

Leading the “Whedonverse” cast is Amy Acker (Angel, Dollhouse) as Beatrice one-half of the unlikely couple, Alexis Denisof (Buffy, Angel, How I Met Your Mother) the other half Benedick, Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) as Dogberry the idiotic constable, Fran Kranz (Dollhouse, The Cabin in the Woods) as the lover Claudio (pictured in the poster above), and Sean Maher (Firefly, The Playboy Club) as the sexy villain Don John. According to an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, the stars of the film didn’t find out about the project until about three weeks before production was set to begin. But since most of them have worked together on Whedon projects in the past, the entire experience was like one big happy reunion.

Considering how quickly entertainment news travels, it’s still surprising that this project was kept under such tight wraps for the two months of its creation and filming. But that makes the news all the more sweet. Don’t start looking up movie ticket prices yet- for now the film does not have a distributor. But considering how excited people are about the news, it won’t be shocking if the film is ready for a big-screen release by next year.
