Buzz Alert: Jay-Z to Score ‘The Great Gatsby’

By  January 03, 2013

Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter is what some would call a 21st-century renaissance man. The new father and husband to one of the most powerful women in entertainment, Beyoncé, ascended from his humble hip-hop beginnings in Brooklyn to some pretty impressive executive ranks: CEO of Def Jam Recordings, co-founder of RocAFella Records and the 40/40 Club, partial owner of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets, and head of Roc Nation, which is home to artists like Rihanna, Melanie Fiona, and J. Cole, just to name a few. Now, the entrepreneur and one-half of the richest celebrity couple of 2012 is taking on a new challenge. He’s giving collaborations du jour a run for their money by working with a certain Jay Gatsby.

Mr. Carter is taking his turn at the Roaring ’20s by composing the score for what will be one of the year’s biggest blockbusters, The Great Gatsby. He’s working with Jeymes Samuel, a producer who goes by TheBullitts, to soundtrack the highly-anticipated, star-studded remake. What would seem like an unlikely collaboration turns out not to be that much of a surprise as Jay-Z’s work on “Gatsby” was teased in one of the film’s trailers. His “No Church in the Wild” single with Watch The Throne cohort Kanye West and Grammy hopeful Frank Ocean was worked into the theatrical trailer of the adaptation. While Samuel tweeted that we can expect some “dope” musical magic to correspond with the Prohibition Era classic, we’re sure our ears will be met with plenty of swagger and booming beats to bring F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary genius to a new generation on the silver screen.

“The Great Gatsby” opens May 10, 2013 with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan.
