CFDA & eBay’s You Can’t Fake Fashion Returns Bigger Than Ever

By  March 20, 2013

While it may seem easy to snap up a look-alike of some of your favorite designer’s wares, the CFDA and eBay are partnering up for the third year in a row to remind us that counterfeits aren’t all their cracked up to be.

The CFDA tapped 90 of America’s favorite designers, including Ralph Lauren, Tory Burch, Prabal Gurung, Rag & Bone, and even CFDA president, Diane Von Furstenberg to customize totes in honor of the cause. For the first time, eBay will auction off each unique tote from now until March 25th 12:00PM EST, starting at $100 to benefit the CFDA Foundation to fight counterfeits and support authentic design. A unique style of the standard tote will also be available to “Buy It Now” for $50 and will also benefit the foundation.

According to a recent CNN report, designer counterfeits, including, shoes, clothing, watches, and even perfume accounted for 32% of seizures by the U.S. Customs and Board Protection. The total value of the goods added up to $58 million with a retail value upwards of $387.3 million! Plus approximately 2.5 million jobs in the U.S. were lost as a result of fake goods.

CFDA CEO Steven Kolb hopes to continue teaching shoppers about the risks of buying fake goods. “It’s an issue that’s incredibly important to both eBay and CFDA,” he explained in a statement.  “With 90 designers on board this year, each customizing a bag as one of a kind to show their support, eBay and CFDA are dedicated to protecting original design and the integrity of the fashion industry.”
