To say that Downton Abbey has become a cult classic strictly because of the period drama’s ridiculously addicting story lines would undermine the role that the wardrobe plays in the TBS series. Sensing that, the show’s production company, Carnival Films, is launching an entire range of products including furniture, homeware, wall paper, stationery, even beauty products, and wait for it, apparel!
“It’s a very slow burn the moment you get into retail, it’s extremely cautious, it has to test the established brand,” Gareth Neame, Carnival Films managing director, told CNBC. “No one wants to launch products if the show’s going to flop.” The show is definitely not running the risk of flopping. In fact, the show is currently taping season four and when we meet up with the Crawley’s and comapny, they will be in the roaring ’20s.
And considering the ’20s resurgence with all of the excitement surrounding the opening of The Great Gatsby, a Downton Abbey clothing line would fare well. According to CNBC, the popularity of the show has translated into huge sales of “arm-length gloves, fur capes, cravats, and waistcoats that the Edwardian characters wear in the series.” Even sherry has seen an increase in sales! Perhaps it will clue us in on what to expect from the line.
