Dating in the city is hard enough without resorting to dull date spots. Ditch the dinner and a movie, and find a site where you can both enjoy yourselves and get to know one another better, even if it doesn’t work out. We turned to Time’s Ben Kaplan, one of the city’s many eligible bachelors to get his picks (and share some of our own) on the perfect places for romance to bloom.

Guy’s Pick: Apps and Nightcap
Sometimes you just don’t have the time to sit through a full meal. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find a great snack to share as you’re getting to know someone. “[Choose a place with] a great vibe and tasty drinks,” Kaplan noted, and don’t forget, sharing is caring!

Ladies’ Choice: Spark Your Inner Chef
Even if you’re not talented in the kitchen, everyone should try to learn a recipe or two and perfect it. In lieu of the typical dimly lit dinner and conversation, get creative in the kitchen with a fun cooking class. Even if neither of you can toss dough in the air, or your knife skills need some work, it’s still a chance for a few laughs and a delicious meal.

Guy’s Pick: Beers and Banter at the Local Bar
If the neighborhood tavern is more your vibe, you can keep things close to snag some cozy atmosphere. As spring starts to thaw out the city, you can share a drink alfresco before heading to dinner, allowing you to calm your nerves for your big date. “[Go to] a low key and fun bar that is lit just enough,” Kaplan explained so you can focus on each other.

Ladies’ Choice: Bowl Them Over
Whether you’re a natural kingpin or a gutterball guru, knocking down pins serve as a great icebreaker for a first date. Create a little competition with the loser picking up the tab on a round of beers for the two of you or the whole group if you’re double dating. Win or lose, you’re sure to have fun and maybe improve your score along the way.

Guy’s Pick: A Stroll Through the Park
There’s nothing more romantic (and underrated) than a walk through the park, and can definitely deliver when it comes to atmosphere. Kaplan believes a park offers great views of nature and allows you to get creative with picnic ideas. “It’s the ideal spot that takes a date beyond the usual drinks or dinner,” he said.
