Day in the Life of Beauty: Sally Hershberger Stylist, Sean Gallagher

By  January 24, 2013

Glam caught up with Sally Hershberger Downtown stylist Sean Gallagher as he navigates the city between suit fittings, celebrity stylings for Kelly Rutherford and finding time to catch a flick with his blogger girlfriend, Amanda. Here he shares his daily schedule:

7:30 AM I wake up next to my beautiful girlfriend Amanda, who is a very talented blogger and graphic artist, in my apartment in New York’s NoLita neighborhood and start checking the news on my iPad. My must-reads are WWD, Style.com, Zac-Fashion.com, and The Sartorialist, and I catch up on the latest trends while enjoying a hot cup of tea. I love the mornings because I have skylights in my apartment and great view of the Empire State and Chrystler Buildings, all the way uptown. If I wake up early enough I’ll catch a morning show, but that usually isn’t the case.
8:00 AM I head to the Equinox gym near my apartment. I like Equinox because of the saturation of locations, plus they have great classes. It’s very clean and I always find time to enjoy the steam room. Not to mention I love the complimentary Kiehl’s products they carry.
10:00 AM I arrive at Sally Hershberger Downtown in the meatpacking district, where I work as a colorist and hairstylist. I’m one of the few people at the salon who does color and styling. It took me a long time to master both crafts, and it was especially difficult to get to a top salon while doing it – but I did and I love it!
12:00 PM I usually don’t get a chance to run out during the day but today I have a final fitting with my friend and suit maker Alaxander Nash. His taste is impeccable and it’s always a pleasure to visit him at his store on West 27th St. All of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe were designed and made by him and, every once in a while, I find a great piece at a thrift store and have him tailor it – although I always have to talk him in to it.
1:00 PM-9:00 PM My days are usually filled by creating art on my friends, my extended family, and my clients. Right now, I’m loving the longer bangs that are coming out that aren’t necessarily full bangs but they’re center parted and look great on almost everyone. I also think the “lob” or long bob is fabulous. It’s fashionable, not soccer mom, and a great alternative for older women who don’t have thick enough hair for long styles. And I’d love to see more daring women who would try out a short cut like Anne Hathaway’s.
5:00 PM Kelly Rutherford came in to the salon for color. Despite the character she portrays on Gossip Girl, she’s quite lovely. It’s a testimony to her acting abilities. I have a great time chatting with her, and the color turns out great. Last time we did a darker blonde, but today we go very light. I’m very fortunate that my career is a mix of editorial shoots and clients. On one hand, I love seeing a client and changing their look; when I see people I get a vision of what I want to do and I love knowing how I can improve their cut and color and make them look their best. But with editorial shoots, you’re spending hours on a style that’s being photographed, so you get to indulge in styling in a way that you can’t in the salon. It’s more decadent.
9:00 PM I have a fabulous dinner at O’Nieals on Grand between Center and Mulberry in Nolita by my apartment. I order the tuna panini like always. Chris O’Nieal, the owner, is a friend and is always around hosting. It’s my Cheers, where everyone knows my name.
10:30PM Go see Gangster Squad with Amanda. We both loved it!
