Create an Audrey-Inspired Cape

By  December 10, 2013

Capes can be intimidating accessories. Equally as (if not more) intimidating is a sewing machine. Well, take a cue from the stylish and perfect Audrey Hepburn and kick your fears to the curb for the time being. You’ll be surprised to learn that pulling off the construction and styling of this timeless cape is a snap.

Items Needed: Fabric scissors, 1 yard fabric (tweed is great because you don’t need to sew a lining), 4 yards velvet ribbon about 1 inch wide, 2 buttons, and 2 hook & latch clasps.

Using fabric scissors cut a semicircle out of 1 yard of fabric that you’ve folded into quarters.

Cut a 3- to 4-inch semicircle out of corner of circle.

Unfold fabric. Make one cut from edge to center circle.

Wrap around your shoulders and overlap fabric at a comfortable spot. Pin and remove.

Cut two slits along outer edge for buttonholes, about 1 inch away from edge. Sew on two buttons directly beneath holes on inside flap. Stitch around buttonholes.

Add trim on all edges. Use velvet ribbon to wrap around edge. Use pins to keep in place as you sew. You can also use hot glue, but it will not last as long.

Stitch two hooks on edge of inside flap. Attach latch to opposite flap.
