Derek Lam‘s next collaboration is moving from the clothing rack to the beauty counter, as the designer has partnered with Estée Lauder for a color cosmetics collection that will be released in January.

It marks the first collaboration since Tom Ford in 2005 and will tap into Lam’s minimalist aesthetic paired with Tom Pecheux’s expertise. The $85 set will include The EyeShadow in Smoked Gold, Kajal Crayon in Near Night (a rich navy), The LipColor in Smoked Blush, and the Gloss in Barely Gold – all housed in a satin hard-case clutch with Lam’s signature dumbbell clasp.

The partnership between the designer and the makeup artist go back in 2003 so the pair easily played off of each other’s strengths with a focus on functionality. “I’ve been working with Tom since my very first show and Estée Lauder for the last eight seasons,” Lam told Women’s Wear Daily. “That longtime involvement is invaluable — we’re really working hand in hand. [W]e both wanted to go beyond that and present a real look for each show. We didn’t just want to go for the classics.”

Estée Lauder is the latest in a batch of beauty brands to tap the talent of designers this year. Lancôme linked up with Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz and Jason Wu, who will also craft a collection for Spring 2014. MAC is returning to the designer front with the likes of Proenza Schouler and Pedro Lourenço slated for shelves next year.

After testing the waters with last year’s collaboration with Kohl’s, Lam is eager to spread his wings even further with a fragrance in the future. “I did a one-off fragrance in the spring of 2006,” he explained. “ We only offered it to the audience at the show – and I still get requests for it. I’ve always tried to incorporate beauty and fragrance – I see that as very intrinsic to what I do, which is not about one particular look or way of dressing, but trying to express personal style.”

We’re marking our calendars as we speak!
