Diane von Furstenberg doesn’t exactly need an award to be a superstar in our eyes, but The Fashion Group International is making it official. This fall, at the FGI’s Night of Stars, von Furstenberg will receive the Superstar Award, alongside a number of other honorees. The gala will be held at Cipriani 55 Wall Street on October 23, and is themed “The Protagonists.” Simon Doonan will serve as master of ceremonies, while Ruben Toledo will create illustrations for the invitation and program.
Joseph Altuzarra, Peter Copping, Brunello Cucinelli and Sarah Burton will be honored alongside von Furstenberg for their achievements in fashion. Carol Hamilton of L’Oreal is the honoree in the beauty category. Tom Kennedy will receive an award for corporate leadership for Fossil, Roger Schmid is the honoree for sustainability for Natura Brasil and William Sofield will be recognized for his work in interior design. Caroline McCall will receive the Edith Head Costume Design award for her work on Downton Abbey and Harper’s Bazaar’s Glenda Bailey is being honored with the Lord & Taylor Fashion Oracle Award.
Clearly, the gala will focus on plenty of fashion leaders, but the “Superstar” of the evening is Ms. Von Furstenberg herself. FGI president and CEO Margaret Hayes said, “Diane is truly a legend in her own time. Perhaps more than any other American designer, she has been profoundly influential in elevating the visibility and importance of the American fashion industry around the world. But beyond Diane’s exceptional talent is a sense of compassion and a generosity of spirit that drive the work of her family’s foundation, which brings quality, hope, beauty and grace to the lives of so many.” Lest we forget about the iconic wrap dress, von Furstenberg is such a superstar because she’s got us all covered, in more ways than one.
