Star Scoop: Lana Del Rey is Wide-Eyed, Justin Timberlake Means Business, Bro Talk with Seinfeld and Wale

By  November 19, 2014

Justin Timberlake doesn’t just reserve his “Suit & Tie” for a night out. The papa-to-be inked a deal to become co-owner at AfterMaster Audio Labs, Inc. The audio company specializes in “enhancing and re-mastering audio quality,” using new mixes of Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off,” and Sons of Anarchy as examples of its work. Looks like Timberlake’s vision isn’t the only thing that’s crystal clear. [Billboard]

Does Lana Del Rey have a shot at the Oscars? Following her Great Gatsby nomination upset (“Young & Beautiful” didn’t make the ballot), the moody singer is lending her voice to Tim Burton’s Big Eyes. She landed not one, but two, songs on the Amy Adams-starrer’s soundtrack, including the titular record. [Vulture]

We all know Jerry Seinfeld’s namesake sitcom was, well, a show about nothing. When rapper Wale dropped his Mixtape About Nothing in 2008, it was an obvious nod to the classic. Now, seven years later (and weeks before you see Seinfeld namedrop Wale in Chris Rock’s Top Five), Complex has united the two in a series of shorts to chronicle their unlikely bromance. Hecklers and strip clubs are part of the conversation. It’s worth a gander… and a few laughs. [Complex]

BAFTA is taking its “A Life In Pictures” series to the small screen. Ahead of its December retrospective with Ethan Hawke, the organization will launch its first “A Life in Television” chat, spotlighting “a major creative force within television.” First up: DinnerladiesWood and Walters, and Patt and Margaret star Julie Waters. [The Hollywood Reporter]

When Idris Elba starred in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, we didn’t anticipate this. The Luther lead will release an album, mi Mandela, dedicated to the South African leader and his late father. It will be released under Elba’s 7 Wallace moniker on November 24. In the meantime, you can stream five tracks from the album here. [Billboard]

SNL is Sending Cecily Strong to the White House

By  November 19, 2014

Late Night with Seth Meyers - Season 1Cecily Strong is trading in her Saturday night for an elegant—and funny!—evening at Capitol Hill.

The SNL cast member will host the 2015 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, becoming the fourth female to emcee the gala in history after Paula Poundstone, Elayne Boosler, and Wanda Sykes.

“Her political humor is sly and edgy, and it comes with a Chicago accent,” White House Correspondents’ Association president Christi Parsons said in a statement. “Cecily grew up in suburban Oak Park, Illinois and got her start in Chicago’s comedy scene with stints at iO and Second City.” Her background is also to thank for Strong’s political savvy. “Journalists are perennial targets for the WHCA entertainer, but Cecily has an edge,” the statement reads. “Her father, Bill Strong, served as Associated Press bureau chief in the Illinois Statehouse.”

Strong first appeared on Saturday Night Live in September 2015 as a co-anchor on its “Weekend Update” segment with Seth Meyers. She was later replaced by show writer Michael Che, but remains a key player on the show as “The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party,” and impersonator of Khloe Kardashian, Lana Del Rey, and more. We take it she’ll leave that shtick for a non-White House date.

BAFTA is Going Back in Time with Ethan Hawke

By  November 19, 2014

AWXI - Day 2Tom HanksMeryl StreepMartin Scorsese, and Quentin Tarantino have all been spotlighted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts through its “BAFTA: A Life in Pictures” series which focuses on how the world’s leading acting talents perfected their craft. On December 18, Ethan Hawke will join their good company.

This winter, BAFTA will host a Hawke retrospective, tracking his most memorable moments in film, from his 1989 breakout role in Dead Poets Society to his Before Sunrise-Before Sunset-Before Midnight trilogy, which was filmed over 18 years with Richard Linklater. His 30-year career includes 3 Academy Award nominations, and wins on the Hollywood Film, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and Village Voice Film Roll award stages.

A press release from BAFTA remained objective in its decision to spotlight Hawke—mentioning his 40-plus film career and credits behind the scenes—but it does offer insight on his upcoming projects. Early next year, we’ll see him in sci-fi thriller Predestination, before he stars in the Shakespearean CymbelineGood Kill, Regression opposite Emma Watson, and In a Valley of Violence with John Travolta.

Hawke’s discussion will be available online here after his live chat at BAFTA HQ.

Meghan Trainor and Diana Ross have Got the Voice!

One is a rising star whose summer debut skyrocketed to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The other is a world-class diva known for high glamour, high style, and an unmistakable mane. This fall, they’ll unite on reality television as mentors on NBC’s The Voice.

On Tuesday’s episode of the Emmy award-winning show, host Carson Daly revealed that Meghan Trainor and Diana Ross will be appearing next week, along with Colbie Caillat and Fall Out Bot frontman Patrick Stump. Their appearance on the show marks a series of firsts for the competition: according to Billboard, it’s the first time in show history that advisers have appeared so late in the series. Additionally, when it’s time to crown the season’s top three, all eliminated contestants will have the chance to come back and compete for a wildcard slot.

Season seven of The Voice has called on acts like Taylor SwiftStevie NicksAlicia KeysGavin Rossdale and Little Big Town to counsel teams led by PharrellGwen StefaniAdam Levine, and Blake Shelton. Its ratings have stayed pretty strong, starting out with nearly 13 million viewers when it debuted in September, and remaining one of NBC’s top shows well into fall. Perhaps a little bass will boost its primetime appeal.

People Magazine’s 2014 Sexiest Man Alive Is…

By  November 19, 2014

SexiestManAliveChris Hemsworth! The Aussie actor receives People magazine’s highest honor for 2014, joining the ranks of heartthrobs including Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Richard Gere, George Clooney and Tom Cruise. Also on the 2014 list of the magazine’s sexy men are Chris Pratt, Jamie Dornan, Ki Hong Lee, Blake Shelton, Bradley Cooper, Matt Bomer, Michael Strahan, Eddie Redmayne, Scott Foley and Tim Tebow. That’s a pretty solid group, if you ask us.

So, how does this year’s hunk feel about his new title? “Good. But you’re a couple years late—I hit my peak a few years ago. I’m on the decline now, so I’m not sure if I still deserve it. But thank you.” Take it from us, Chris: keep up that insane Thor-worthy gym routine and never lose that impossibly sexy smirk (or your hot Aussie accent), and you’ll always deserve it.

Pick up a copy of the magazine or head to People.com for some more sexy.

Star Scoop: Miley is Still Miley, Idris Elba is Coming Stateside, U2 Channels Beyonce

By  November 18, 2014

141118_Star Scoop

Here’s Miley Cyrus in a new commercial for hosiery brand the Golden Lady Company, being, well, Miley. She’s topless and gets pretty cavalier while ripping apart a teddy bear. Sounds like our girl. [Billboard]

Good news: BBC’s popular crime drama Luther is being adapted for a stateside debut. The bad: Idris Elba probably won’t reprise his titular role, but instead, serve as its executive producer. We’ll just have to take him any way we can. [Deadline]

U2 is taking a page from Beyoncé’s book. After surprising us with a free copy of Songs of Innocence in our iTunes library, the band says it will release a video for every song on the album under Films of Innocence. Their #visualalbum will comprise work from 11 street artists who’ve interpreted each song into a short film. Cool concept—just hoping it doesn’t magically appear in our video stream. [Stereogum]

The theme for Solange’s wedding day domination was nothing short of regal. “She’s a really good friend of ours and, you know, we wanted to make her look like a queen,” said Humberto Leon who designed her custom Kenzo gown, cape and all. Royalty, indeed. Bow down. [ELLE]

Happy holidays from Ellen DeGeneresPortia de Rossi, and their glistening, Kim K.-inspired backsides.[Huffington Post]

Box office success aside, there are some holes in Interstellar’s plot. Director Christopher Nolan acknowledges this and is here to fill in the void… with a comic strip. The accompaniment centers around Matt Damon’s character Dr. Mann, and offers the backstory on a journey he and robot SKIPP took before appearing on the silver screen. [The Hollywood Reporter]

We can’t deny that Dave Chappelle is making a comeback of sorts, but we were surprised to see him cover GQ’s Men of the Year issue. We were even more stunned by his bucket list admissions. Among them: he wants to road-trip from coast to coast and punctuate his travels with public barbecues, then go on to guest star in as many television shows in 2015 as possible, include Scandal. Yep, he’s a gladiator. [Vulture]

Matthew McConaughey Immortalized on Hollywood Walk of Fame

By  November 18, 2014

Matthew McConaughey Honored With Star On The Hollywood Walk Of FameThe 2,534th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has Matthew McConaughey’s name all over it.

The Academy Award-winning star was joined by his wife Camila Alves and three children—all in Dolce & Gabbana—Monday morning to cement his addition to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s official A-list lane. “Matthew McConaughey is one of Hollywood’s most popular leading men,” Walk of Fame ceremonies producer Ana Martinez said in a statement. “The community of Hollywood is proud to place his star on our famed historic Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

Despite his Dazed and Confused debut in 1993 and debatable roles in rom-coms like Failure to Launch, the 45-year-old Texan started to be taken seriously in 2011’s Bernie, before going on to nab an Oscar, Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe, Gotham, and SAG Award for his dynamic transformation in 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club. When he took to the mic on Monday—with Interstellar co-stars Anne HathawayJessica Chastain, Mackenzie Foy, and director Christopher Nolan on hand—McConaughey threw in an ode to his hometown and the dreams he still has in mind.

“I am from Texas,” he said. “We have a home in Texas, but this business and this industry, I feel like it’s a privilege every single day that I get to get up on a Monday morning—I have a career that I look forward to Monday morning, to going to work. That I’m proud to be able to say. He added “this industry has given me… a chance to live out some dreams I didn’t even know I had, dreams I’m still finding along the way, and what other business can you go live them out, but in this storytelling business?”

That man and his rhetoric—gotta love it!

Anna Wintour Can’t Get Enough of Kim Kardashian, Even If She’s Tasteless

By  November 18, 2014

141118_Kim K

There seems to be a trend with Kim Kardashian, magazine covers, and hashtags.

When she surprised the masses and seemingly fell in Anna Wintour’s good graces for the March 2014 issue of Vogue, the glossy dubbed her and now-husband Kanye West #worldsmosttalkedaboutcouple. Fast forward to November 12, and her viral, nude cover shoot with Paper Magazine. Y’know, the one with intent to #breaktheinternet.

Both sparked controversy. For Vogue, spectators praised her for breaking classism barriers à la West and proving her influence over style, while others deemed her unworthy of intruding upon the covetable holy grail. For Paper, fans applauded her fearlessness and ability to bounce back post-baby; the rest chalked it up as yet another absurd display of narcissism and crass behavior from a disreputable celeb. But what does Wintour have to say?

“I see the role of Vogue to reflect what’s going on in the culture. The first celebrity that I put on the cover of Vogue was Madonna, and that was considered completely controversial at the time, too,” she said during the first installment of The Atelier with Alina Cho. “It’s such a long time ago probably no one remembers, but she was a very controversial figure. Now she’s part of the establishment. I think if we just remain deeply tasteful and just put deeply tasteful people on the cover, it would be a rather boring magazine… I hope another Kim Kardashian comes along this year!”

Did she liken Kardashian to Madonna, imply that she was distasteful, and foresee a second coming of Kim K. in one breath? Oh, that Wintour is good. As for Kardashian, folks are still talking… and wondering why nudewhy now? Especially after that W Magazine debacle.

“I looked at it as an art project for me,” Kardashian said during a televised interview in Australia this week. “This was going to make me feel confident and feel good and it taught me to do what you want to do… I felt really positive and really good about myself.”

Alright, alright, alright.

Taylor Swift (& More!) Will Perform at The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

By  November 18, 2014

VS2014PerformersIt looks like Taylor Swift is getting an encore performance at this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in London—but she won’t be the only singer to strut her stuff on stage. Victoria’s Secret shared via Instagram that Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran and Hozier will all be joining her. So, we know what the Fantasy Bras look like and who’s wearing them, we’ve gotten the lineup of models, and we finally know what to expect in the way of musical appearances—the only things left to our imagination are the glittery skimpy outfits they’ll all be sporting. Oh, and whether  Grande will give up her high ponytail for some more VS-worthy bombshell waves. Tune in on December 9 to see if Tay Tay can top her performance from last year.
