While we wish Kerry Washington’s December Lucky magazine cover would have given us gladiators a little more glam, Eva Chen maintains that the goal was to spark conversation when she shared it on Instagram.

“I realize that when you put something on social media, it’s meant to be a conversation,” she told Women’s Wear Daily. “I’m still pretty new to this [being an editor in chief]. It’s only been four months, but I’ve been active in social media for a while now. Anything on social media is up for debate. Conversation is a good thing.”

Comments under the 33-year-old editor’s photo of her latest cover ranged from “This is literally the worst cover I’ve ever seen and I’ve been a subscriber since the beginning,” to “Amazing! Love her!”

It’s also important to realize that Anna Wintour approved this cover. “Anna as the artistic director was definitely aware of our cover selection and was very supportive,” Chen told WWD. “Anna always provides me with guidance. As editor in chief, it comes down to my decision—and Anna agreed.”

Well, if the bobbed one likes it, surely the rest of us will just have to deal.
