Fall Trend: Put a Hat on It
By Katherine Fotinos
October 26, 2012
Keeping your head warm this season has taken a turn toward the avant-garde with the replacement of the standard beanie with more unconventional hat styles. February’s fall 2012 runway shows were all about the new trend, with some standout zany headwear from Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, and Louis Vuitton. Despite their cartoonishly wide saucer brims and thick, furry material, the mad-cap hats on the Jacobs and Kors runway looked surprisingly sophisticated paired with elaborate dresses and rich textured coats. Louis Vuitton displayed a modern interpretation of the cloche shape, popularized in the 1920s, with a higher top and more exaggerated, less rigid all-around structure. Shades of deep crimsons, smoldering grays, and autumn greens and yellows made the look especially relevant for fall, in line with this season’s most popular colors.
