Victoria Beckham and Liya Kebede Champion Born Free

By  April 23, 2014

More than 700 children are born with HIV every day. Hard at work combatting that statistic is Born Free, a private sector-led initiative with the sole objective of ending mother-to-child transmission of HIV by December 31, 2015.

To bring awareness to the cause, the Born Free Collection just launched on Shopbop, an exclusive collaboration from the retailer, Vogue and 22 designers like Donatella Versace, Phoebe Philo, Miuccia Prada, Victoria Beckham and Sarah Burton for mother and child. All proceeds will benefit Born Free’s fight.

“The importance of having a generation born free of HIV can’t be overstated,” John Megrue, founder and chair of Born Free. “I am thrilled that the fashion community has so generously added their time, talent and voice to our collective efforts to meet the serious, but achievable, challenge of eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV by December 31, 2015.”

In addition to the collection, Victoria Beckham and Liya Kebede traveled to South Africa to see Born Free’s mission at work. They’re working on a piece for Vogue’s May issue, further drawing attention to the cause.

Patrick Demarchelier shot the campaign featuring model mothers Doutzen Kroes, Sasha Pivovarova, Lily Aldridge, and Karolina Kurkova.

Primark Is Headed to the U.S.

By  April 23, 2014

primark-heads-to-the-u.s

Mark your calendars, fast fashion fans: Primark is headed to the U.S.

The British retailer announced its plans to open a store on the East Coast beginning the end of 2015, but it won’t be in the Big Apple according to Women’s Wear Daily. Instead Associated British Foods, the brand’s parent company, has already found space in Boston’s historic Burnham building at Downtown Crossing. More US outposts are expected to pop up through 2016.

As Fashionista noted, the retailer will have a slew of competition to handle–similar stores such as Joe Fresh, Topshop, H&M, and Zara have already placed their stake on American soil. Another challenge to note: Its lack of e-commerce, which could also make it difficult for the fast fashion fixture to break through.

But with all of the hurdles in place, Primark felt primed to hit the states after successfully launching outposts in Spain and France, as both are difficult markets in Europe. As such, it seems like a smart move to test the waters in Boston, which isn’t as saturated as New York. We’re happy to hop on Amtrak to check out the space and snag a few cheap and chic items when it opens its doors.

Valentino’s Rockstud line has reached new heights.

The wildly popular line for the Italian fashion house is allowing us, the consumer, to step into the design chair with a new collection of customizable accessories in shades of the brand’s iconic red, Luxury Daily is reporting. Now, this is a DIY we can get behind!

“The intended audience is one that includes the core consumer who is already a brand loyalist while also introducing additional shoppers whose interest is piqued due to the focus on hues and customization,” Kimmie Smith, an accessories expert told the site. “The idea of making things personal and incorporating a brand’s heritage into your own in a new way is universal to those that have frequented the brand as well as those that were either on the fence in terms of purchasing or are completely new to coveting these items.”

We’re absolutely sure that you’ll covet this customizable collection. Who wouldn’t want to create their own Rockstud? Now you can place personalized studs on pumps, handbags and small leather goods.

Fit For A Queen: Jenny Packham On Dressing Kate Middleton, and America

By  April 23, 2014

KateMiddletonJPAnytime the Duchess of Cambridge steps out of a building, off of an airplane, or onto the street, the world watches with baited breath…to see what she’s wearing.

It all began, perhaps, with that captivating moment that she revealed her Alexander McQueen wedding gown. And the obsession with What-Will-Kate-Wear has only grown since. She has her favorite (British) labels, and Jenny Packham is certainly one of them. According to Women’s Wear Daily, the designer works with the Duchess in what is “’always quite a collaboration.’” Therefore, when the public gives Kate such high praise for her choice of dress (most recently, it was the Jenny Packham creation dubbed “The Fern dress”) designers like Packham have reason to celebrate.

While Packham has been designing dresses for over 25 years, there’s no debate that the Duchess has helped to put her on the fashion map. Going forward, Packham and her business/life partner Matthew Anderson have quite a lot to be excited about.

On Thursday, she’ll host her first-ever ready-to-wear trunk show at Neiman Marcus in Los Angeles with a VIP salon scheduled for Wednesday evening. This trip to LA will also bring Packham into contact with editors and stylists. Surely, it’s trips like these and exposure like the kind garnered by a Kate Middleton appearance that will serve as the push Packham needs to build her American market. Of her bridal show on April 18, Packham said, “This is the pinnacle of everything we do, doing the collection, meeting the people we sell to, which gives me amazing feedback.” Hopefully such feedback will lend itself to the company’s expected 30% sales gain for 2014, as well as Duchess of Cambridge look-alikes all over Manhattan.

Faces on the Newsstand: Olivia Wilde on Lucky, Emma Stone on Vogue, Emma Stone on Vogue, Olivia Munn on Allure

By  April 22, 2014

Olivia Wilde’s pregnancy makes her feel like a goddess. “I just thought, ‘Oh I’m going to hide this forever,” Lucky’s May cover girl said. “But I ended up getting kind of excited to show the bump, as a badge of pride. Like I’m a woman! Look at me making a human! I am a goddess!” She looks like one too, wouldn’t you say?

Emma Stone is on a roll, according to Vogue magazine. The May cover girl got her start after beginning her parents to go to L.A. at 15 years old and will soon have four new films hit theaters. “The thing I gravitate toward naturally is comedy,” Stone said. “But I want to do different things,” perhaps “truly bizarre characters. “I would like to see what I can do.” She isn’t the only one.

Olivia Munn is on the cover of Allure’s May issue and according to the accompanying text, she’ll shock you. Oh, we greatly anticipate the ways, Allure. We can’t wait.

Susie Bubble Lets Us In

By  April 22, 2014

susie-bubble-writes-a-book

Susanna Lau made a name for herself behind the blog, Susie Bubble, and now, she’s letting us into her bubble, er, world with her latest project: a book!

“There is a reason why I’m confuzzling you all on Instagram… with my jaunty travels from Sydney to Tokyo and now to Hong Kong,” she posted on her blog. “The reason being is that I’m gathering pics and words galore for my upcoming book. Yes, I’m writing book.”

“Has it been formally announced?” the 30-year-old continued. “I don’t think so… does it require a formal announcement? Probably not. And for good reason too seeing as I haven’t quite formulated the right words (or media blurb) to describe this thing that I’m penning.”

If she chooses to go the Alexa Chung route and dedicate her tome to things she loves, we can look to her Instagram for a peek of what’s to come: whimsical jaunts, funky sunglasses and a peek at her awesome wardrobe.

We wish her all the best and can’t wait to add this to our coffee tables!

Today marks 30 years of Forever 21 providing fast fashion to the masses! To celebrate, free lipgloss will be gifted to those who make in-store purchases of $35 or more and free shipping will be offered for all online purchases of $30 or more. “We’re thrilled to be celebrating our 30th anniversary, Don Chang said. “What started out 30 years ago as a single location retail store has grown into a business far exceeding our expectations.” We’d say so! [GLAM Inbox]

The revolution won’t be televised, it will be Instagrammed and Cara Delevingne is leading the way as fashion’s only truly “modern supermodel.” “In an age of the fastidiously styled and perfected presented model, Delevingne offers something gloriously weird.” And we’re into it. [New York magazine]

You don’t have to wait much longer to get your hands on Kate Moss for Topshop! Thanks to Harper’s Bazaar, now you can score on three items: a gold beaded fringe dress for $500, Tuxedo Lame Jacket for $240, and a Strappy Black Jumpsuit for $150. In addition, the newly minted lifestyle brand will support the Nora Ephron Prize (created last year in honor of the filmmaker/writer), a $25,000 award for a woman writer or director whose distinctive voice embodies that of Ephron. Way to go, Coach! [Women’s Wear Daily]

Slow shoppers keep right! 10-year-old Chloe Nash-Lowe took action against slow walkers in a letter penned for a class assignment asking the children to write a formal letter to a public figure or company. “I am incredibly disappointed by people walking around your shopping centre—it annoys me so bad I want to scream,” she wrote. “You should stop people walking slow as people are in a rush for work and this could cause people being late. It is dangerous because if someone bumped into you that person will fall over.” Good looking out, Choe![Elle]

Isabella Rose Taylor may be just 13 years old, but she just landed a major deal. Her clothing line will be sold in Nordstrom! “And amazing thing happening,” said Taylor. “They liked my clothes.” Her “hippie-grunge, yet feminine,” line will debut in August 2014 for the back-to-school market, with 10 to 15 pieces in 10 Nordstrom stores. How’s that for being an overachiever? [Fast Company]

Sad news: the cool color options—like the newly introduced rose gold—for the Nike FuelBand are no more. Though Nike will continue to release “Metaluxe” colors, the 70-person hardware team was let go in order to focus on developing its fitness software. We’re left wondering what this could mean in terms of a potential partnership with Apple, given the rumors of the brand’s native fitness app. [Fashionista]
