Style Scoop: Vogue Still Rules… and So Does Anna Wintour, Welcome to the Blakery

By  July 23, 2014

Vogue’s September issue is still the biggest in the land. Last year the Conde Nast publication boasted of 661 pages—making it the actual weight of the bible—and this year, when the issue hits newsstands it will weigh in with 631 pages. Not as big as last year’s issue, but certainly still impressive. Lucky and Teen Vogue weren’t as, well, lucky. Each publication’s September pages declined by 33.9% and 34.3% respectively. Speaking of Conde Nast, Anna Wintour is not only the company’s creative director across all their titles, as of today, she is editorial director as well! In a memo circulating Conde Nast CEO Chuck Townsend wrote, “as strategic leadership changes we are making as part of a succession plan we started early this year,” [Wintour] “will ensure that our content and culture remain at the forefront of our industry. [President Bob Sauerberg] and I will rely on her for her insights and guidance as we build the team that will lead us into the future.” [Daily Intelligencer]

Blake Lively’s husband, Ryan Reynold, calls his home ‘The Blakery” because his wife bakes so often. Vogue spent 73 questions with Preserve’s founder where she shared that she prefers cupcakes to cake, would love to live in Paris and the movie she laughed the hardest through. [The Scene]

Britney Spears is not that innocent. In fact, the singer is launching a new line of lingerie called The Intimate Collection. She shared a sneak peak of what’s to come on Twitter and Instagram. The collection will include comfy camisoles and sheer separates. [The Huffington Post]

This man deserves a cookie! An apparently very bored 27-year-old French boyfriend created a 9-minute 21-second video that splices together all of the brands mentioned over the course of the Sex and the City’s six seasons. All. Of. Them. Is that amazing or what? [Glamour]

eBay Helps Young British Designers

By  July 23, 2014

eBay is really trying to make their mark in the fashion industry—perhaps in an effort to move away from that pesky counterfeit settlement with LVMH?

In any event, this is big news. eBay is teaming up with the British Fashion Council to create BFC Contemporary, “an initiative aimed at helping fashion designers in the contemporary segment of the market with mentorship, strategy and commercial opportunities.”

“Each of the inaugural BFC Contemporary designers possess incredible creativity and strong brand concepts,” said Caroline Rush, CEO of the BFC. “These designers mark a new wave in British contemporary design, the rise of which we aim to fuel with this new initiative.”

Alexis Barrell, Georgia Hardinge, Paper London, Prism and Zoë Jordan are the inaugural BFC Contemporary class and will have their business plans, collection plans, pricing, on and offline presence examined by members of the BFC and eBay’s head of fashion brands Melanie Smallwood. Each designer will also undergo bespoke mentoring sessions.

The designers will create a limited-edition piece that will be sold at the BFC Contemporary shop in September on eBay.co.uk.

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Releases Capitol Couture 'Living Portraits'

By  July 23, 2014

Talk about white hot! Capitol Couture is giving Hunger Games fans a closer look at the style of the Quarter Quell victors Peeta Mellark and Johanna Mason.

The imprisoned pair is presented as living portraits in the movie’s online fashion magazine with the same clean, minimalist aesthetic of President Snow’s sinister public address to Panem. Mason (Jena Malone) showcases her  “Statuesque Allure” in a sculptural Alon Livne gown that “juxtaposes the flowing drapery of classic statuary while the super modern and sculptural iridescent white bodice references the branch motif of the Panem Seal.”

The striking look was paired with Alexander Wang heels and hand-carved marble bangle by Chen Chen and Kai Williams. Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) channels his Spirit of Strength in an Unconditional matte leather suit with Maison Martin Margiela shirt and shoes. The look is completed with a paper collar piece by David Mason, which takes the similar artistic elements of Mason’s dress.

These living portraits arrive mere days before the debut of the first full trailer from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part I that will be unveiled on July 25 at Comic Con. The features also serve as a way of dangling the two prisoners as bait to draw the District 13 rebels out of hiding. We wonder how much longer Katniss and her revolutionary crew will wait to rescue the Quarter Quell winners.

Beyoncé Channels Rosie The Riveter

By  July 23, 2014

BeyonceRosieRiveterQueen Bey is the latest celebrity to embody World War II’s iconic Rosie the Riveter, and we have to say she pulls it off quite well. Beyoncé flaunted a nicely toned bicep in the photo (if you’ve seen “On The Run,” you know is only indicative of how incredible the the rest of her body looks), which she posted to her Instagram on Tuesday. From the knotted red bandana to the badass smirk, Beyoncé hit all the right notes with this photo. Could this be a response to rumors that she and hubby Jay-Z are getting divorced, which have been swirling for a few days, now? Perhaps time will tell, but for now, we’re loving seeing Bey enjoy her time “On The Run” by flexing her feminist muscles and paying tribute to the original “Independent Woman.”

By  July 23, 2014

NayaRiveraWedSurprise! Naya Rivera is a married woman! The Glee star married actor Ryan Dorsey on July 19 in Cabo San Lucas, in front of a small group of close family, People.com reports. “We feel truly blessed to be joined as husband and wife,” the pair told People. “Our special day was fated and everything we could have ever asked for.” Rivera and Dorsey met in Los Angeles and became friends four years ago. Their relationship blossomed shortly after Rivera ended her engagement to rapper Big Sean in April.

The bride wore a lace Monique Lhuillier gown, and the groom wore a Dolce & Gabbana suit. Her bouquet consisted of daisies and babies breath, and the couple exchanged Neil Lane rings. Congratulations to the beautiful couple!

Style Snaps: July 22, 2014

By  July 22, 2014

MirandaKerrpostEvery day, we bring you celebrity sightings and stylings as seen everywhere from the streets to the red carpet. Whether they’re dolled up or dressed down, we can’t resist the need to know who wore what.

The Canadian tuxedo look is really taking hold, and the latest to test out the style is Miranda Kerr. While some might say that a good rule of thumb is to make sure your denim pieces are contrasting shades, we have to say that Kerr’s monochrome take totally works. Her luxe accessories prevent the outfit from going too country, and keep it grounded in good-old-NYC style.

Style Scoop: Zac Posen Doesn’t Believe in Banning Trends, Go Bare with Dita von Teese, Lord & Taylor’s Birdcage

By  July 22, 2014

Don’t ask Zac Posen which trend he would get rid of. “Banning any trend is like… neutering culture,” the designer said during his Reddit AMA. Oh, and he used his 20s to engulf himself in all sorts of cultures. “Through my twenties, I fully engrossed myself in the glamour lifestyle, traveled the world, ate in some of the best restaurants, and had a quite fabulous life experiences—from being mentored and partners in my early twenties with Puff Daddy (who I’ve always call “Sean”) to dining with royalty to living the American West—planes, trains and automobiles.” [The Cut]

Today Dita von Teese’s signature lingerie collection is launching on Bare Necessities. To celebrate the full range-styles that are available up to 44 band and E cup, Bare Necessities wants to see your take on von Teese’s signature cat eye until July 27 using #DitaCatEye. Be sure to tag @barenecessitiesdotcom. The top 10 cat eyes will be chosen, and posted on the Bare Necessities Facebook page and Instagram. Von Teese will chose 2 winners who will receive her signature perfume, and 4 winners will be chosen to receive her signature press on nails. [Glam Inbox]

Lord & Taylor has two new concept shows for you to shop this fall: Birdcage and Brand Assembly. “We are looking to really inject newness and fashion relevance,” Liz Rodbell, the department store’s president. “We’re testing new concept in our flagship. It’s a great place to bring new exciting ideas.” Birdcage will house “a highly curated, eclectic assortment with over 1,00 styles” from vendors like Alex Woo jewelry, Tai jewelry, Marie Turnor handbags, Joya candles, and flowers from Flower Girl when it opens in October. When Brand Assembly opens in September, it will showcase up-and-coming advanced contemporary designers “with a rotating mix of approximately 20 creators,” like Sachin & Babi and Priory of Ten. [Women’s Wear Daily]

Instead of making a big production of out the fact that their July catalog features disabled models, Nordstorm simply released it without much ado. “We have a long history of incorporating diverse models into our catalogs and marketing,” the retailer’s spokesperson Tara Darrow said. “For us it’s really about wanting to ensure that we’re reflecting the diverse customers and communities we serve.” [Glamour]

News from the capitol! In preparation for the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, the film has launched a fashion magazine from the capitol. Capitol Couture features a living portrait of Johanna Mason, the female victor from the 71st Hunger Games from District 7. The site reads, “Here we see Johanna in a n exquisite Alon Livne creation that ‘juxtaposes the flowing drapery of classic statuary while the super modern and sculptural iridescent white bodice references the branch motif of the Panem Seal.’  With plunging lines and slits as daring and divine as the warrior woman herself, every element of Johanna’s ensemble (including her Alexander Wang shoes and hand-carved marble bangles by Chen Chen and Kai Williams) exudes her fierce strength and enduring pride- a true darling of the Capitol.” Cute.  [Fashion Gone Rouge]

Dress Like Mrs. West: Lace Dresses For Summer

By  July 22, 2014

Say what you will about the Kardashian-Jenner clan—there’s no denying that these girls have style. We can thank André Leon Talley for drawing our attention to their latest sartorial feat. “Fashion Alert!” he shared in his #KimyeWedding diary for Vogue. “Clearly the Kardashian sisters are bringing back maxi fashion by wearing long lace dresses for day.”

He was right. While the most photographed lace dress that Kim Kardashian has worn is her wedding dress, we’ve spotted North West’s mom rocking this trend multiple times.

As early as last fall, the reality-TV star was spotted in a white, lacy Dolce & Gabbana for her appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. Then in March, the star reprised her look in a Rachel Roy fall 2013 lace creation for Seth Meyer’s Late Night chair. More recently, in May, Kardashian uploaded a photo of herself to Instagram in front of the flower wall Kanye West gifted her for Mother’s Day, wearing an Agent Provocateur lace slip.

Of course, Kardashian rocked the trend in her signature style—with a healthy dose of sex appeal, complete with undergarments on display. For those who wish to emulate her on-trend look, without baring all, we’re here to help. Choose a dress that is first and foremost lined—if you want to show a bit more skin, opt for an illusion-neck or illusion-sleeve silhouette. Then the important thing to keep in mind is length. Since lace can easily veer into boudoir territory, keep it appropriate for daytime by picking a dress with a longer hemline.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t also talk about a major part of Kardashian’s look—her sleek, shiny hair. You can achieve this look at home using Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Anti-Humidity Smoothing Milk. Squeeze a dime-size amount of milk between your palms before working through your hair.

Now you’re more than ready to give this Kardashian-approved trend a go! We’ve curated our seven favorite lacy looks to get you from your work desk to the weekend.

1. Lace Maxidress, available at H&M for $34.95
2. Peter Pilotto “Leia” Printed Lace Dress, available at Moda Operandi for $2,245

The Second Saint Laurent Biopic Will Put A Spell On You

By  July 22, 2014

Saint Laurent might be the “unofficial” Yves Saint Laurent biopic, but we have to say it looks pretty darn good. Saint Laurent’s business partner and lover, Pierre Bergé, only approved of the first film about the designer’s life, dubbed Yves Saint Laurent, but this second upcoming film surely has promise. Aside from the fact that Saint Laurent is in French and we can’t understand a word of it because there are no subtitles, the tension and drama is evident in the trailer that was released Tuesday.

Don’t expect to see the designer’s archives in this one (Bergé only authorized access for Yves Saint Laurent), but do prepare yourself for a star-studded cast and a close-up look at his lifelong battle with substance abuse. Gaspard Ulliel plays Saint Laurent, Lea Seydoux plays muse Loulou de la Falaise, model Aymeline Valade plays model Betty Catroux, Jérémie Renier plays Berge and Louis Garrel plays Jacques de Bascher. We’re not entirely sure we’ll be able to follow this film in its entirety because of the whole French thing, but we did catch a few things from the trailer: the very dramatic statement, “Je t’aime Jacques,” several utterings of the designers name in impeccable French accents, snakes and the song “I Put A Spell On You.” Needless to say, we are intrigued.
