With her cartoonish outfits and outlandish wigs, we never really caught a case of closet envy when it came to Nicki Minaj. Until now. In a sit-down with MTV, the YMCMB emcee shared that her style transformation—trading in psychedelic prints and neon wigs for body-conscious Alexander McQueen and her natural, black locs—signals coming full circle.
“I went so far to the other side that there’s only one place to go from there,” she told the network while promoting The Other Woman. “You can either continue doing costumes or you can just say, ‘Hey guess what? This will shock them even more. Doing nothing will shock them even more.’”
And give us a serious case of girl-crush. Since debuting a pared-down look on ELLE’s April 2013 cover and parting ways with long-time wigmaker Terrence Davidson, Minaj has been serving serious style left and right. There were those bare-faced candids from her Mexican getaway, McQueen at the MTV Movie Awards, and Jean Paul Gaultier at the The Other Woman’s premiere after-party. Her evolution isn’t stopping there.
In addition to refining her look, Minaj admits that her upcoming album, The Pinkprint, will chronicle a return to the lyricism fans enjoyed during her Beam Me Up Scotty and Sucka Free mixtape days.
“The tracks on [my next album] are back to my hip-hop roots,” she told MTV. “And I don’t think it’s something that I’m necessarily trying to do. As soon as I started working on my new album, that’s just the songs that I’ve been writing.”
Good riddance to leopard-print wigs and the sugary-sweet “Starships” sounds? Round of applause, girlfriend!
As for her signature curves, those are here to stay.
