Style Scoop: Coco Rocha Studies Pose, Valentino Adds A Couture Show, Marissa Webb Takes Banana Republic In a New Direction

By  October 31, 2014

StyleScoopOct31Known for her poses, model Coco Rocha was the perfect model to help Steven Sebring realize his idea of making an encyclopedia of 1,000 poses. Rocha modeled for Sebring over the course of three days to complete the project, a book called Study of Pose. He shot all 1,000 poses on what he calls his “rig”—a geodesic dome filled with cameras that shoot simultaneously, producing images that can be viewed from 360 degrees. If that sounds cool, to you, just wait until you see the photos. [The Cut]

To celebrate the opening of its Fifth Avenue store, Valentino will show an entire couture collection in December. This will be the house’s third couture show this year, following January and July. Vanessa Friedman attributes this overwhelming couture schedule to the brand’s desire to show where their customers are, instead of adhering to the fashion’s traditional timing and location rules for shows. Marissa Webb is helping Banana Republic reinvent its look. As creative director, Webb is doing everything she can to bring Banana Republic back up to speed with the likes of J. Crew, H&M and Zara. Of her upcoming spring collection, she said, “There will be a lot more color, more patterns, new proportions. We will be pushing accessories, handbags, shoes and jewelry.” Overall, the mood will be “less serious and more how people dress, not necessarily head-to-toe suiting but more mixed up.”  [Women’s Wear Daily]

Plus-size line Eloquii is now available at Nordstrom.com. Launched in 2011 by The Limited and then relaunched in February as an independent brand, Nordstrom.com will not carry 35 styles from the line. The brand targets women ages 20 to 40 who wear sizes 14 to 24, but plans to increase its sizing options to sizes 26 and 28 in December. [Women’s Wear Daily]

Kat Alexander’s new creation, the Siren Ring, is meant to help women protect themselves against attacks. When the wearer rotates the face, the ring emits a painful piercing sound that’s intended to startle and deter an attacker. The sound can be heard from “well over” 100 feet, according to Alexander. The ring launches November 1 and will sell for $245, though Alexander hopes to be able to drop the price point. [Fashionista]

"What Would Yeezus Wear" Bloggers Channel Kimye Flawlessly

By  October 31, 2014

KimYeezusPost

Like it or not, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are forces on the fashion scene. Showing up at fetes for Carine Roitfeld and hanging out front-row at the most exclusive Paris fashion shows–oh, also, remember when they were on the cover of Vogue?–are some of their favorite past times lately. Naturally, anytime we see either one of them, they’re precisely put together (in Givenchy, Lanvin, Valentino, Hermes, Chanel, Maison Martin Margiela, or all of the above), with Kim favoring skin-tight neutrals and Kanye opting for, well, leather anything.

The fashion world has truly become their stage, and everyone has taken notice–including two fashion bloggers, who’ve taken it upon themselves to replicate their strongest couples looks. On a tumblr page titled “What Would Yeezus Wear,” co-creators Katie Burroughs and Kathleen Lee re-create Kimye’s most fashionable moments. The pair masters not only Kim and Kanye’s wardrobe, but their body positioning and facial expressions as well. Also, the photos helped us realize that they definitely they get dressed together everyday–or, at least, the same person (read: Kanye) picks out both of their outfits on the reg.

In recent years, I’ve worn my fair share of skinny jeans. Ever since they became popular, they also became a staple in my wardrobe—the style is flattering and looks great with virtually everything. Plus, there’s an element of polish to a nice, dark skinny jean. But for as many pairs as I’ve been through, I stayed away from the high-rise variety for fear that they’d make my legs look shorter than short…and then there’s that whole mom-butt thing. As of a couple weeks ago, though, I decided that enough was enough and I took the high-rise plunge.

On a morning, when I stared at my very full closet for what felt like an hour (I was only a little late to the office), I decided that I truly had nothing to wear. But after some more staring and careful consideration, I went for the high-rise skinny jeans that had recently scored a hanger in my closet. That’s right, I successfully styled a pair of Black Orchid high-rise skinny jeans to perfection. The slim fit (they’re super stretchy and feel lived-in even though I’d just snapped off the tags) gives an outfit a feminine silhouette, so I offset it with a pair of inspired-by-the-boys chunky brogues. I tucked in my t-shirt, threw on a blazer, swiped on a rich berry lipstick, and then looked in the mirror and wondered why I hadn’t thought of that before. I couldn’t walk out of my apartment without a cuff-roll, of course, or a leopard-print scarf. –Lauren Kaplan

8 Colored Coats We're Craving This Season

By  October 30, 2014

8-Colored-Coats-We're-Craving-This-Season
If you’re only planning on making one monumental purchase for the cold weather months, make it a coat in a Crayola colored hue. Camel, black, and grey outerwear are staples that are standard to most of our wardrobes–but a bright cloak of sorts? That is bound to make a statement this season.

The trend was a head turner in a number of Fall/Winter 2014 collections. An array of oranges on the Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and Dries Van Noten runway, soft pastels like pink and sky blue at Chloe, Carven, Gucci, and Delpozo, and overcoats of a cornucopia of hues, materials, and patterns showing up at Tibi, House of Holland, Wes Gordon, Burberry, and more. Pick your preferred pigment and look for a cocoon inspired silhouette–oversized and heavy–the shape that stole the show at Fashion Week. The eight above should serve your a starting point.

I’ve admired vintage-inspired designs ever since I was young. I could never say no to a circle skirt, monogrammed sweater, or a dress that made me feel like I stepped out of Hollywood’s golden age. There’s a fun flair that brings back waves of nostalgia, but it could be hard to try out the classic silhouettes if you’re larger than a size 10.

Modcloth’s blend of vintage and contemporary (with a sweet splash of kitsch) has long been a favorite of mine, and so I was over the moon when the company expanded its size range up to 4x a year ago. I was even more excited to find out they partnered with plus size blogger Nicolette Mason for a collection inspired by retro silhouettes with a touch of modern rocker appeal.

While I adored every piece in the collection, my eyes were instantly drawn to the dressed named after Mason herself. The baby pink fit-and-flare comes covered in soft velvet dots as a fun play on textures, and even has a petticoat to help fluff out the skirt. Slipping into this little number instantly had me kicking up my heels and twirling to my heart’s content. I can easily take the dress from desk to drinks and any other occasion on my social calendar. Regardless of where I step out in this fancy frock, I know I look pretty in pink! – Valis Vicenty

Every day, we bring you celebrity sightings and stylings as seen everywhere from the streets to the red carpet. Whether they’re dolled up or dressed down, we can’t resist the need to know who wore what.

It was all about Tom Ford on Wednesday evening in Los Angeles, as the annual amfAR Inspiration Gala honored him for his ongoing work with the foundation, which focuses on AIDS research. And while you weren’t looking at the designer himself, you were certainly looking at Rihanna and Miley Cyrus, each sporting a racy Ford design. At the event, which was hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow, Rihanna presented the designer with his Award of Inspiration. RiRi and Miley definitely kicked off a whose-dress-is-sexier contest, but no matter who you think won that battle, one thing’s for sure: they both rocked Tom Ford.

Chris Benz Takes Over As Creative Director at Bill Blass

By  October 30, 2014

ChrisBenzBillBlassChris Benz sat the last few seasons out as far as showing collections for his eponymous collection goes, but he’s about to make a big comeback. The designer is the new creative director at Bill Blass, with his role beginning immediately. His appointment follows a years-long struggle to keep a creative lead in place after Jeffrey Monteiro was let go in 2012.

The company’s President Stuart M. Goldblatt is looking to Benz to reinvent the brand and bring it into the new, social generation. “The whole idea was to bring in an American designer who understands women today and who is highly social just as Mr. Blass was,” Goldblatt said. Blass will use his social media skills to do just that, adding a focus on the modern woman. To put those skills to use from the get-go, Blass took to his Twitter account (which boasts over 56,000 followers) on Thursday morning to announce the news.
